The Philosophy Of Don Quixote: A Look At The Character Using Heidegger’S Authenticity, Matthew D. Mangum

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

The following paper will take an existential philosophical idea and apply it to a renaissance novel featuring a medieval character. The existential idea of authenticity as explained by Martin Heidegger will be outlined and then used to evaluate the main character of Miguel de Cervantes’ novel Don Quixote, the knight-errant Don Quixote de la Mancha.

Faint Radio Sources And Star Formation History, Deborah B. Haarsma, R. B. Partridge, R. A. Windhorst, E. A. Richards Dec 2000

Faint Radio Sources And Star Formation History, Deborah B. Haarsma, R. B. Partridge, R. A. Windhorst, E. A. Richards

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

The centimeter-wave luminosity of local radio galaxies correlates well with their star formation rate. We extend this correlation to surveys of high-redshift radio sources to estimate the global star formation history. The star formation rate found from radio observations needs no correction for dust obscuration, unlike the values calculated from optical and ultraviolet data. Three deep radio surveys have provided catalogs of sources with nearly complete optical identifications and nearly 60% complete spectroscopic redshifts: the Hubble Deep Field and Flanking Fields at 12h + 62°, the SSA13 field at 13h + 42°, and the V15 field at 14h + 52°. …

Toward A Pragmatic Understanding Of Status-Consciousness: The Case Of Deregulated Education, Tomiko Brown-Nagin Dec 2000

Toward A Pragmatic Understanding Of Status-Consciousness: The Case Of Deregulated Education, Tomiko Brown-Nagin

Duke Law Journal

This Article discusses the relationship between federal equal protection doctrine and the states' experiment with deregulated education-in particular, charter schools whose student bodies are identifiable on the basis of status. I argue that the states' experiment with deregulated education and the Supreme Court's understanding of the limitations imposed by the federal Equal Protection Clause on status-conscious state action are substantially in conflict, though not inevitably so. Reconciling state policy and federal constitutional law requires, first, that state legislatures draft laws that are consistent with the Court's skepticism of explicitly status-conscious state action, and its ambivalence toward state action that addresses …

The Unfounded Fear Of Regulation S: Empirical Evidence On Offshore Securities Offerings , Stephen J. Choi Dec 2000

The Unfounded Fear Of Regulation S: Empirical Evidence On Offshore Securities Offerings , Stephen J. Choi

Duke Law Journal

Regulation S provides U. S. issuers with an exemption from the registration requirements of the Securities Act of 1933 to the extent that securities are offered and sold solely outside the United States. Through resales back into the United States, however, U. S. investors may become exposed to unregistered securities initially distributed abroad through Regulation S. This Article identifies two distinct risks from an offshore securities offering. First, issuers may conduct an offering under Regulation S as a means to sell securities indirectly into the United States through resales in situations where the U. S. secondary market overvalues the issuer's …

Deference And Disability Discrimination, Rebecca H. White Dec 2000

Deference And Disability Discrimination, Rebecca H. White

Scholarly Works

In 1999, the question of deference to the EEOC grabbed the spotlight. It surfaced in a case that arose under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (the "ADA"), a relatively new, and sweeping, anti-discrimination law that prohibits workplace discrimination against qualified individuals with a disability. A difficult substantive question was presented: Is the determination of whether one has a disability within the meaning of the ADA to be made with or without regard to mitigating measures? Instinctively, either a "yes" or a "no" answer seems problematic. On the one hand, defining disability without regard to the corrective effects of …

Teaching First-Year Civil Procedure And Other Introductory Courses By The Problem Method, Stephen J. Shapiro Dec 2000

Teaching First-Year Civil Procedure And Other Introductory Courses By The Problem Method, Stephen J. Shapiro

All Faculty Scholarship

I have been teaching the first-year course in Civil Procedure for twenty years, first for five years at Ohio Northern University, and for the last fifteen years at the University of Baltimore, where I also teach a required second-year course in Evidence. When I first started teaching Civil Procedure, I used a fairly typical case method. I was never very happy with this approach for teaching a course in which one of my major goals was getting the students to learn to read, interpret and apply the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (“Federal Rules”). Gradually, I began to develop sets …

Modeling High-Frequency Seafloor Backscattering Of Gassy Sediments: The Eel River Margin Case, Luciano E. Fonseca, Larry A. Mayer Dec 2000

Modeling High-Frequency Seafloor Backscattering Of Gassy Sediments: The Eel River Margin Case, Luciano E. Fonseca, Larry A. Mayer

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Models of acoustic backscatter typically take into account two different processes: interface scattering and volume scattering. What happens to these two contributions when the sediment is charged with gas bubbles? For the interface backscatter contribution we adopted the model developed by Jackson et al. (1986), but added modifications to accommodate gas bubbles, which when present, even in very small quantities, can dominate the acoustic characteristics of the sediment. The model parameters that are affected by gas content are the density ratio, the sound speed ratio and the loss parameter. To a first approximation, the model roughness parameters are not influenced …

"Like Liberty And Union": Stanton And Anthony As Friends, Ann D. Gordon

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

While deciding upon an appropriate topic for this address, I realized that like athletes who head to Disneyland, I, after this big game, wanted most of all to take the next train back to the nineteenth century. So, to celebrate the end of my presidential term, I will start that return journey, speaking about the friendship between Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, or more precisely, about the intersection of this friendship with documentary scholarship.

Voltage Collapse Prediction For Interconnected Power Systems, Amer S. Al-Hinai Dec 2000

Voltage Collapse Prediction For Interconnected Power Systems, Amer S. Al-Hinai

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A steady state analysis is applied to study the voltage collapse problem. The modal analysis method is used to investigate the stability of the power system. Q-V curves are used to confirm the obtained results by modal analysis method and to predict the stability margin or distance to voltage collapse based on reactive power load demand. The load characteristics are considered in this research. Different voltage dependent loads are proposed in order to be used instead of the constant load model. The effect of induction machine load is considered in this study. The load is connected to several selected buses.;The …

Design, Construction, And Evaluation Of Coal Extraction Pilot Plant To Manufacture Coal-Based Carbon Pitch, Brian Wayne Bland Dec 2000

Design, Construction, And Evaluation Of Coal Extraction Pilot Plant To Manufacture Coal-Based Carbon Pitch, Brian Wayne Bland

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A solvent extraction technique for removing mineral matter, including the inorganic sulfur, from coal has been developed by the Department of Chemical Engineering at WVU. The extraction is preformed at mild conditions (202°C and atmospheric pressure) using the solvent N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NMP). Laboratory results have shown that this technique yields a clean coal product containing less than 1 percent ash and virtually no inorganic sulfur.;This research was conducted for further process design and economic development of an industrial-scale extraction process.;This research reported the possibility of production scale processing by constructing a pilot plant. The pilot plant was used to explore the …

Improving The Simulation Of A Waterflooding Recovery Process Using Artificial Neural Networks, Edison Gil Dec 2000

Improving The Simulation Of A Waterflooding Recovery Process Using Artificial Neural Networks, Edison Gil

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The waterflood performance of the dual five-spot pilot project in the Stringtown oil field, situated in West Virginia, has been studied. A numerical simulator, called BOAST98, was used for the simulation purposes, after developing a reservoir description.;The producing horizon in the field is the Upper Devonian Gordon sandstone, which is characterized by severe heterogeneity due to the depositional environment. Using available core and log data and geological analysis, a reservoir characterization study was done. A preliminary reservoir description based on log porosity-core permeability correlation was improved by developing Artificial Neural Networks (A.N.N.), which incorporates geophysical well log information. These A.N.N.'s …

Improving Commercial Vehicle Crash Data Quality In West Virginia, Kris Sean Gillespie Dec 2000

Improving Commercial Vehicle Crash Data Quality In West Virginia, Kris Sean Gillespie

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to identify methods to improve commercial carrier crash data in West Virginia including coal trucks. All organizations and agencies involved with commercial carrier safety need ready access to basic data describing the crash-involved operator, vehicle, and environment. Such data are necessary to any programmatic or engineering countermeasures. The basic approach used to accomplish the research objectives involved a series of regional meetings where law enforcement personnel expressed their opinions about ways to improve commercial vehicle crash data quality. These results were then weighted and prioritized. The top five solutions generated at these meetings were: …

Evaluation Of Opacity, Particulate Matter, And Carbon Monoxide From Heavy-Duty Diesel Transient Chassis Tests, Ronald Page Jarrett Dec 2000

Evaluation Of Opacity, Particulate Matter, And Carbon Monoxide From Heavy-Duty Diesel Transient Chassis Tests, Ronald Page Jarrett

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Opacity and emission data were collected from heavy-duty diesel engines exercised through snap-acceleration tests and transient chassis dynamometer tests. Emission data were gathered using the West Virginia University (WVU) Transportable Heavy Duty Vehicle Emission Testing Laboratories (THDVETL) and opacity data were collected from two opacity meters; the Wager 650CP full flow opacity meter and the Bosch RT 100 partial flow opacimeter. Results showed that the Bosch peak opacity readings were consistently higher than the Wager peak opacity readings, and both meters showed little correlation with filter-captured particulate matter (PM). It was also observed that the snap-acceleration test did not identify …

Optimization Of A Roll Over Protective Structure (Rops) Using Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis, Adam Michael Gillispie Dec 2000

Optimization Of A Roll Over Protective Structure (Rops) Using Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis, Adam Michael Gillispie

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The use of a conventional Roll Over Protective Structure CROPS) on farm tractors over the years has saved numerous lives and prevented countless injuries. By removing the ROPS, the tractor operators place themselves in unwarranted danger.;This led the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and West Virginia University Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering to the development of a deployable ROPS, which could remain down to aid in required housing space for the tractor and prevent debris from striking the tractor operator while being driven.;This research effort focuses on the application of computer-aided design and analysis to structurally optimize the …
