Dynamic Analysis Of A Composite Moving Beam, Ganesh Chandrasekaran Aug 2000

Dynamic Analysis Of A Composite Moving Beam, Ganesh Chandrasekaran

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this thesis, an attempt is made at studying the dynamic characteristics of a composite-moving beam.;The model considered is an overhang beam on simple supports oscillating in the longitudinal direction. The lateral response of the beam is studied due to an initial lateral deflection. The beam is made-up of laminated composite materials. Both symmetric and unsymmetrical lay ups are considered. Since unsymmetrical lay ups introduce bending-axial coupling, axial deformation needs to be considered also. First Order Shear Deformation theory (FSDT) is used to formulate the problem since transverse shear deformations are important for composite beams. When reducing laminate plate theory …

Detection Of Subsurface Anomalies In Composite Bridge Decks Using Infrared Thermography, Hasan Moh'd Alqennah Aug 2000

Detection Of Subsurface Anomalies In Composite Bridge Decks Using Infrared Thermography, Hasan Moh'd Alqennah

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This document presents the findings of an experimental study on the use of Infrared Thermography for nondestructive evaluation of subsurface anomalies in composite bridge decks.;Composite bridge deck specimens were constructed in the laboratory with varying subsurface delamination conditions such as sizes, thicknesses and filler materials. These simulated delaminations were placed between the 3/8&inches; thick wearing surface and the top of the fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) deck. The laboratory specimens were tested using the infrared imaging system. The infrared images from the delaminated specimens were compared with solid (undamaged) specimens to study the effect of subsurface anomalies (delaminations) on the infrared …

Dynamical Analysis Of Infant Social Referencing, Melissa Sue Atkins Aug 2000

Dynamical Analysis Of Infant Social Referencing, Melissa Sue Atkins

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of the present study was to examine relations between joint attention, language, maternal sensitivity, and temperament and the emergence of social referencing in infants and to closely observe variability in social referencing. Five infants, 7 months of age, were observed on a weekly basis for a period of four months. All five infants were engaging in social referencing behavior at the beginning of the study, which is much earlier than the literature indicates; therefore, the onset of the behavior was missed. However, results did indicate variability in social referencing behavior, in that infants referenced more in the laboratory …

Carnivalized Narratives In The Postmodern Long Poem, Joe Wade Moffett Aug 2000

Carnivalized Narratives In The Postmodern Long Poem, Joe Wade Moffett

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As a decidedly American tradition, the long poem has become the premier literary endeavor for poets in the twentieth-century. Writers such as T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, and William Carlos Williams have pursued the long poem, but under the auspices of the "modern epic." Three postmodern long poems---Kenneth Koch's Seasons on Earth, Edward Dom's Gunslinger, and James Merrill's The Changing Light at Sandover---illustrate a dramatic rupture with the texts of modernism by introducing comic situations and multi-voiced narration---situations described by Mikhail Bakhtin as "dialogism" and "carnival," receptively---into the canon of American long poems. These innovations allow the postmodern long poem …

Injunctions Restraining Calls On Performance Bonds: Is Fraud The Only Ground In Singapore?, Quentin Loh, Hang Wu Tang Aug 2000

Injunctions Restraining Calls On Performance Bonds: Is Fraud The Only Ground In Singapore?, Quentin Loh, Hang Wu Tang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This paper traces the divergence of Singapore law from English law with regard to the grounds upon which a call on a performance bond can be restrained, in particular the recent recognition of the Singapore Court of Appeal's ruling that "unconscionability" is a separate ground to restrain the call of a performance bond. This article examines the legal nature of an on demand performance bond and seeks to challenge the assumption that a performance bond is a mirror image of a letter of credit. This paper also discusses the recent case of Cargill International v. Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries …

The Relationship Between Tenure And Non-Tenure Track Status Of Extension Faculty And Job Satisfaction, Patrick I. Nestor, Pat Leary Aug 2000

The Relationship Between Tenure And Non-Tenure Track Status Of Extension Faculty And Job Satisfaction, Patrick I. Nestor, Pat Leary

Journal of Extension

This study examined the relationship between tenure and non-tenure track status of Extension faculty and job satisfaction. Data were collected through questionnaires mailed to West Virginia University Extension faculty (85% responding). Analysis revealed non-tenure track faculty reporting significantly more intrinsic job satisfaction than tenure track faculty. Significant relationships also exist between age and intrinsic job satisfaction and years at the institution and intrinsic and overall satisfaction. Respondents ages 23-33 and 46-50 are more satisfied than those 34-45 and more than 51 years old. Those with 21+ years at the institution are more satisfied than faculty with 1-5 and 6-9 years.

Five Graduate Teaching Assistants In The Upper Midwest: Their Struggles, Their Strategies, Their Strengths, Carrie B. Brouse Aug 2000

Five Graduate Teaching Assistants In The Upper Midwest: Their Struggles, Their Strategies, Their Strengths, Carrie B. Brouse

Theses and Dissertations

This study sought to describe the first semester graduate teaching experience had by five newly appointed graduate teaching assistants (GTAs), each from different departments across a midwestern university campus. Its purpose was to gain insight into the ways GTAs might come to make meaning of their experiences, construct knowledge in their disciplines, develop their personal teaching styles and skills, and further their way into their chosen professions. The study spanned the fall of 1999 semester.

Qualitative methods, including participant observations, personal interviews, and reviews of journal entries written by the GTAs, were used to study the first semester graduate teaching …

The Structure Of Occupational Preference: An Examination Of Occupational Knowledge, Self Knowledge, Indecisiveness, And Response Inconsistency, Marque Randall Aug 2000

The Structure Of Occupational Preference: An Examination Of Occupational Knowledge, Self Knowledge, Indecisiveness, And Response Inconsistency, Marque Randall

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the factors of vocational choice is an important component of career counseling. It is hypothesized that difficulties in choice are related to: (a) one's knowledge of occupations, (b) one's knowledge of self, and (c) the method one uses to match a chosen occupation to oneself One indicator of difficulties in occupational choice would be inconsistency in preference across items. Response inconsistency was measured using a paired comparison task. Occupational knowledge, self-knowledge, and decisiveness were measured using corresponding sub scales from the Career Factors Inventory. The participants were 102 undergraduate students at Utah State University who were recruited by the …

A Meta-Analysis On Relationship Modeling Accuracy: Comparing Relational And Semantic Models, Qing Cao, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Keng Siau Aug 2000

A Meta-Analysis On Relationship Modeling Accuracy: Comparing Relational And Semantic Models, Qing Cao, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Semantic data modeling, such as entity-relationship (ER) modeling and extended/enhanced entity-relationship (EER) modeling, has emerged as an alternative to relational data modeling. The majority of research in data modeling suggests that the use of semantic data models leads to better performance. However the findings are not conclusive and sometimes inconsistent. In this research, we investigate modeling relationship correctness in relational and semantic models. The meta-analysis carried out in this research is an attempt to alleviate inconsistent results in previous studies.

Centenary Of A Giant, Journal Of Book Of Mormon M. Studies Jul 2000

Centenary Of A Giant, Journal Of Book Of Mormon M. Studies

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

It has been 100 years since George Reynolds published his massive work, A Complete Concordance of the Book of Mormon. Reynolds worked on this project, begun while serving a prison sentence for polygamy, over 21 years of his life. He tabulated virtually every word used in the Book of Mormon except a few of the most common words, and gave a portion of the sentence in which each cited word appeared. He himself paid all the printing costs.

Lehi As Moses, Noel B. Reynolds Jul 2000

Lehi As Moses, Noel B. Reynolds

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Lehi and his people understood their own times in terms of types and shadows from the past. God’s leading the family out of Jerusalem and reinstituting his covenant with Lehi in a new promised land can be understood only by comparison with the exodus and the roles of Lehi and Nephi in terms of Moses. This article identifies fourteen Mosiac themes and circumstances that Lehi invoked in his sermon recorded in 2 Nephi 1 and illustrates close parallels with these themes in Deuteronomy. Lehi may have compared himself to Moses as a rhetorical device to help his children see the …

The Problematic Role Of Dna Testing In Unraveling Human History, John L. Sorenson Jul 2000

The Problematic Role Of Dna Testing In Unraveling Human History, John L. Sorenson

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Over the last century, new techniques of scientific analysis have been developed that have been applied with the intent to clarify the course of human history. Immediately after World War II, blood group data seemed to provide a magic key to open up the history of the world’s populations, but by the 1960s such studies were shown to be unrealistic and misleading. The new tool in human biology and anthropology is DNA analysis. Despite cautions from the best scientists about the limits the new findings have for interpreting human history, some enthusiasts continue to claim too much for DNA study.
