Pose Estimation Of Target Satellite For Proximity Operations, A. Cropp, P. Palmer, C.I. Underwood Aug 2000

Pose Estimation Of Target Satellite For Proximity Operations, A. Cropp, P. Palmer, C.I. Underwood

Small Satellite Conference

Close-proximity operations are increasingly a topic of interest, where satellites manoeuvre within a very small distance of other spacecraft. A high degree of accuracy is required in estimating the relative position and orientation of the other spacecraft, in order to conduct such manoeuvres safely. Traditionally, active systems such as radar or more recently Differential GPS have been used for relative position estimation, yet these give little information on the orientation of the other satellite. Passive imaging can provide a large amount of information on the location and orientation of the Target, with high spatial resolution. Imaging requires only low-powered cameras, …

The Snap-1 Machine Vision System, Richard Lancaster, Craig Underwood

Small Satellite Conference

In June 2000, the Surrey Space Centre (SSC) and Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) launched the remote inspection demonstrator nanosatellite, "SNAP-1". One of the primary mission objectives of this satellite was to image its companion microsatellite, Tsinghua-1, during the deployment phase of the launch. Later in the mission it is also planned that SNAP-1 will be manoeuvred back within visual range of Tsinghua-1, in order to carry out further imaging experiments whilst the satellites fly in formation. To fulfill its mission, SNAP-1 carries a powerful, innovative and highly integrated Machine Vision System (MVS). This consists of four ulta-minature CMOS video …

Leveraging off of our active optic technologies, the novel active pixel position sensors (APPS) enable wide dynamic range and allows simultaneous imagery of faint and bright stars in a single image. Moreover, the APPS, in conjunction with the adaptive optics technologies, offer unprecedented accuracy in altitude and navigation applications.

Microsatellites And Improved Acquisition Of Space Systems, Matt Bille, Robyn Kane, Drew Cox Aug 2000

Microsatellites And Improved Acquisition Of Space Systems, Matt Bille, Robyn Kane, Drew Cox

Small Satellite Conference

Traditional Department of Defense (DoD) practices in the acquisition of space systems have focused on advanced versions of proven technology, meaning large satellites. This paradigm contributes to dependence on a handful of satellites, program schedules measured in decades, and the expensive oversight and program management functions which must be applied to systems which, since there are so few assets, cannot countenance failures. The escape from this paradigm is offered by Microsatellites (Microsats). Microsats are not only useful technology, but technology which enables a different approach to acquisition. What the authors call the Microsat Acquisition Paradigm (MAP) is partly modeled on …

By judiciously using COTS technology a new space computer product that has lower cost, higher performance, is easy to use and retains the high reliability necessary for use in spaceborne missions was developed. Modern COTS processors and memories are used with a mixture of military and radhard components to meet the unique thermal-mechanical environment and radiation environment of space and still satisfy the need for highreliability, low power consumption and low weight.

Leostar: Lessons Learnt And Perspectives, Lionel Dribault, Christophe Durteste, Agnès Salvatori Aug 2000

Leostar: Lessons Learnt And Perspectives, Lionel Dribault, Christophe Durteste, Agnès Salvatori

Small Satellite Conference

In 1996, Matra Marconi Space (now Astrium) has started the design of Leostar, a family of small platforms capable of supporting Earth observation, science and communication missions for a large range of Low Earth Orbits. This internal initiative has been triggered by the Faster/Better/Cheaper (FBC) tendency appearing among institutional customers and obvious on the export market. Hence, Astrium strategy was to provide standard qualified platforms relying upon a generic core avionics, as well as customized elements to be used for specific applications. To achieve these FBC goals, Astrium implemented innovative design and validation incremental methods, coupled with the maximum use …

On Thermal Buckling Of Patched Beam-Plates, Anette M. Karlsson, W. J. Bottega Aug 2000

On Thermal Buckling Of Patched Beam-Plates, Anette M. Karlsson, W. J. Bottega

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The behavior of uniformly heated plates is considered for the situation where a patch is adhered over a region of the structure. A variational formulation results in a self-consistent set of equations and conditions, which governs the response of the system. The nonlinear problems are solved analytically, yielding exact results within the context of the mathematical model employed. A stability criterion is established for the class of problems considered, based on the second variation of the potential energy of the composite structure, and issues of stability are assessed in this context. Three non-dimensional parameters that characterize the response of the …

Total Cross Sections For Dissociative Electron Attachment In Dichloroalkanes And Selected Polychloroalkanes: The Correlation With Vertical Attachment Energies, Kayvan Aflatooni, Paul Burrow Aug 2000

Total Cross Sections For Dissociative Electron Attachment In Dichloroalkanes And Selected Polychloroalkanes: The Correlation With Vertical Attachment Energies, Kayvan Aflatooni, Paul Burrow

Paul Burrow Publications

Electron attachment into the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of a typical polychloroalkane in the gas phase forms a temporary negative ion in which the impinging electron resides on a combination of local C–Cl σ* orbitals. Because of the antibonding character of these orbitals, these anions may dissociate, producing Cl- with cross sections that vary enormously over the chloroalkane family. In this work, we present absolute total dissociative electron attachment (DEA) cross sections for 33 of these compounds, and we show that the peak values of the cross sections correlate strongly with the vertical attachment energies (VAEs) for formation of …

Low Cost Planetary Exploration: Surrey Lunar Minisatellite And Interplanetary Platform Missions , Susan Jason, Jeff Ward, Alex Da Silva Curiel, Andy Phipps, Luis Gomes, Martin Sweeting

Small Satellite Conference

In order to meet the growing global requirement for affordable missions beyond Low Earth Orbit, two types of platform are under design at the Surrey Space Centre. The first platform is a derivative of Surrey’s UoSAT-12 minisatellite, launched in April 1999 and operating successfully in-orbit. The minisatellite has been modified to accommodate a propulsion system capable of delivering up to 1700 m/s delta-V, enabling it to support a wide range of very low cost missions to LaGrange points, Near-Earth Objects, and the Moon. A mission to the Moon - dubbed “MoonShine” - is proposed as the first demonstration of the …

Denmark's Second Small Scientific Satellite, Per Lundahl Thomsen, Flemming Hansen

Small Satellite Conference

Denmark is now planning its second scientific satellite after the first successful mission “Ørsted”. The new satellite has been named Rømer after the Danish astronomer Ole Rømer (1644-1710). The 2 scientific experiments, which will be implemented, are MONS with the primary science objective of observing some 20 nearby, solarlike stars by measuring tiny oscillations in intensity and colour by precision photometry. This is done to probe the stellar interior for determination of its temperature, composition, age and internal rotation, and Ballerina with the primary science objective of tracing and monitoring short “Gamma-Ray Bursts”. The current mass of the combined satellite …

Nanosatellites Technology Demonstration, Ángel Martínez, Ignacio Arruego, Maria Teresa Álvarez, Jesús Barbero, Héctor Guerrero, David Levy, Ana Gras

Small Satellite Conference

Nowadays, it is widely used the term Nanosatellite when we refer to those satellites whose mass are less than about 10 kg. But it is not only a question of size and power consumption when we talk about this new kind of satellites; it is also a new spacecraft design philosophy. In this paper, we present a small LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellite, named ‘NANOSAT’, designed and developed by the Spanish Space Agency INTA (Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial), currently in the manufacturing and testing phase. We will show here the general design philosophy, which has conducted the project to …

Ness: Using A Microsatellite To Search For And Track Satellites And Asteroids, Kieran Carroll, Alan Hildebrand, David Balam, Jaymie Matthews

Small Satellite Conference

The Near Earth Space Surveillance (NESS) mission is being developed by Dynacon and a team of asteroid scientists, supported by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND). NESS uses a single satellite to perform a dual mission: searching for an tracking Earth-approaching asteroids, and tracking satellites in Earth orbit. There are aspects of both of these activities that are best accomplished using an orbiting observatory. The concept presented here is to implement NESS using a small imaging telescope mounted on a lowcost microsatellite-class platform, based on the design developed for the MOST stellar photometry …

In-Orbit Estimation Of The Inertia Matrix And Thruster Parameters Of Uosat-12 , Re Bordany, Willem Steyn, M. Crawford Aug 2000

In-Orbit Estimation Of The Inertia Matrix And Thruster Parameters Of Uosat-12 , Re Bordany, Willem Steyn, M. Crawford

Small Satellite Conference

This paper describes a Recursive Least Square (RLS) procedure for use in orbit to estimate the inertia matrix (moments and products of inertia parameters) of a satellite. To facilitate this, one attitude axis is disturbed using a reaction wheel whilst the other two axes are controlled to keep their respective angular rates small. Within a fraction of an orbit three components of the inertia matrix can be accurately determined. This procedure is then repeated for the other two axes to obtain all nine elements of the inertia matrix. The procedure is designed to prevent the build up of momentum in …

Consistency Of Findings Across International Surveys Of Mathematics And Science Achievement: A Comparison Of Iaep2 And Timss, Michael O'Leary, Thomas Kellaghan, George F. Madaus, Albert F. Beaton

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

The investigation reported in here was prompted by discrepancies between the performance of Irish students on two international tests of science achievement: the Second International Assessment of Educational Progress (IAEP2) administered in 1991 and the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) administered in 1995. While average science achievement for Irish 13-year-olds was reported to be at the low end of the distribution representing the 20 participating countries in IAEP2, it was around the middle of the distribution representing the 40 or so countries that participated in TIMSS at grades 7 and 8. An examination of the effect sizes associated …
