Factors Influencing Space Heat And Heat Pump Efficiency From A Large-Scale Residential Monitoring Study, Florida Solar Energy Center, Matthew Bouchelle Aug 2000

Factors Influencing Space Heat And Heat Pump Efficiency From A Large-Scale Residential Monitoring Study, Florida Solar Energy Center, Matthew Bouchelle

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Since Florida utilities often experience their system peak during the state's few cold mornings, understanding influences on space heat performance is important to controlling demand. Analysis of heat pump impacts on system load in a large scale monitoring study have shown large levels of strip heat being used during the winter morning peak. The implied coefficient of performance of heat pumps during the system peak hour was only 1.30. Also, analysis of the total seasonal space heat has shown that the implied Heating Season Performance Factor (HSPF) of heat pump homes is only 4.4 Btu/W rather than the 6-8 Btu/W …

Facts: Appellant No.1 developed independent computer word processing systems. Appellant no. 2 was the exclusive distributer of the systems in Israel, and also provided its customers in Israel with maintenance and repair services. The respondent had been an employed by the appellant as a computer technician, and had at the time of his employment, signed both an agreement not to compete with the appellant in anything related to the marketing and repair of Linear systems, as well as an “Agreement to Protect Confidentiality,” according to which he was obligated to maintain the absolute confidentiality of information that he may obtain …

We have investigated the induced polarization of paramagnetic Sb overlayers on the Heusler alloy NiMnSb. From combined X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and spin-polarized inverse photoemission spectroscopy (SPIPES), we can assign some of the unoccupied states of the Heusler alloy NiMnSb. With increasing thickness of the Sb overlayer, there is a decline in the density of states near the Fermi energy, as expected for a semimetal overlayer on a metallic substrate. While the Sb is polarized by the ferromagnetic NiMnSb substrate, consistent with the expectations of mean field theory, the polarization at the center of the surface/overlayer Brillouin zone cannot be …

Design And Test Of An Economical Cold Gas Propulsion System, Joseph Cardin, Jesus Acosta Aug 2000

Design And Test Of An Economical Cold Gas Propulsion System, Joseph Cardin, Jesus Acosta

Small Satellite Conference

Small satellites are emerging as the preferred platform for a wide variety of earth orbit and even interplanetary missions. These spacecraft are, by their very nature, extremely limited in budget, volume, mass and power. Existing fluid propulsion options are too large, costly and complex for many small satellite applications. In an attempt to address this problem VACCO has produced an inexpensive, modular system specifically designed for the special needs of small satellites. This paper documents the results of a development program conducted for NASA and administered by the Applied Physics Laboratory of John Hopkins University. The Cold Gas Propulsion System …

Development And Transition Of Low-Shock Spacecraft Release Devices For Small Satellites , Andrew Peffer, Eugene Fosness, Capt. Stephen Hill, Waylon Gammill, Dino Sciulli Aug 2000

Development And Transition Of Low-Shock Spacecraft Release Devices For Small Satellites , Andrew Peffer, Eugene Fosness, Capt. Stephen Hill, Waylon Gammill, Dino Sciulli

Small Satellite Conference

Small satellites require a variety of release devices to accomplish mission-related functions such as separation from the launch vehicle, separation from each other, and deployment of instruments. The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has been working with several private companies to develop low shock, nonpyrotechnic spacecraft release devices to mitigate problems with traditional pyrotechnic release devices. Pyrotechnic devices produce high shock, contamination, and have costly handling requirements due to their hazardous nature. Small satellites are particularly susceptible to shock-related failure because of the close proximity of sensors and instruments to the shock source. In addition, small satellites deployed as constellations …

Small Satellite Conference

This paper presents a low-cost microspacecraft platform concept for missions which require high D-v capabilities of up to about 1,500 m/s, using auxiliary launch opportunities, e.g., from the Ariane 5 ASAP. The proposed concept is extremely flexible and can be adapted to specific mission requirements, thus permitting low-cost missions to Earth orbit, as well as to the Moon, Mars, and selected asteroids. A particular focus of this paper is on the modularity of the proposed concept, including the bipropellant propulsion system needed to provide the required D-v, the lightweight structural concept, and the 3-axis attitude determination and control system (ADCS), …

Cost Effective Propulsion Systems For Small Satellites Corners To Cut, Corners To Honor , Olwen Morgan, Joe Cassady, Stacy Christofferson

Small Satellite Conference

This paper will examine the development and test philosophy of a new, miniature pulsed plasma thruster destined for flight on the UW Dawgstar nanosatellite, and the development and test philosophy of small hydroxyl ammonium nitrate (HAN) thrusters intended for satellite use. The key to cost effective development is to know when both a rigorous analysis and a full test program is needed, and when the use of heritage hardware in a similar application may permit more latitude. The discussion will include a review of system challenges and considerations. Techniques used to design, build, and test new propulsion systems will be …

The ORBCOMM Satellite Constellation has provided global two-way wireless messaging services for the past number of years. ORBCOMM applications are limited by the network's low-bandwidth and its high latency. WAP is designed to deliver Internet Services to applications using a variety of low-bandwidth, high latency bearer services. WAP’s objective is to unify the different wireless networks to provide access to different Internet Services. The current ORBCOMM user base may benefit from these WAP Services as well. WAP messages may be tunnelled in ORBCOMM globalgrams or messages which are delivered as normal E-mail to a dedicated E-mail Server / WAP Gateway …

Mems Mega-Pixel Micro-Thruster Arrays For Small Satellite Stationkeeping, Daniel Youngner, Son Thai Lu, Edgar Choueiri, Jamie Neidert, Robert Black Iii, Kenneth Graham, Dave Fahey, Rodney Lucus, Xiaoyang Zhu

Small Satellite Conference

Small satellites flying in clusters require periodic “stationkeeping” to keep them in place. The required impulse is very small – the goal is not to keep the individual satellites in rigid formation, but only to keep them in well-defined orbitals with respect to one another. The necessary impulse, therefore, is only the amount needed to overcome the difference in drag between the most-affected and the least-affected satellites in the cluster. Estimates are that the differential drag can be overcome by providing ~1 mNsec (micro-Newton second) to ~1 mN sec (milli-Newton second) every 10 to 100 seconds throughout each satellite’s mission. …

We Use a Comparative Approach to Examine Some of the Physiological Traits that Make Flight Possible. Comparisons of Related Fliers and Runners Suggest that Fliers Generally Have Higher Aerobic Metabolic Capacities Than Runners But that the Difference is Highly Dependent on the Taxa Studied. the High Metabolic Rates of Fliers Relative to Runners, Especially in Insects, Are Correlated with High Locomotory Muscle Cycle Frequencies and Low Efficiencies of Conversion of Metabolic Power to Mechanical Power. We Examine Some Factors that Produce Variation in Flight Respiration and Energetics. Air Temperature Strongly Affects the Flight Metabolic Rote of Some Insects and Birds. …
