A Study Guide To St. Paul's Letter To The Romans : A Section-By-Section Commentary On Romans With Questions For Reflection, Scott Gambrill Sinclair Sep 2000

A Study Guide To St. Paul's Letter To The Romans : A Section-By-Section Commentary On Romans With Questions For Reflection, Scott Gambrill Sinclair

Faculty Authored Books and Book Contributions

I have been dismayed for some time that there is a shortage of good biblical study guides. Most genuinely informed and creative books on the Bible are written primarily for scholars and are too technical (and often too long) to be accessible to general readers. This book is the result. Here I present my own under-standing of the structure and purpose of Romans and, at the same time, provide a survey of this epistle that any educated reader can follow and that will be useful for group Bible study as well. I hope that you find it helpful

Capital Enhancement Guarantees And Risk Management By Capital-Constrained Lenders, J.D. Von-Pischke Sep 2000

Capital Enhancement Guarantees And Risk Management By Capital-Constrained Lenders, J.D. Von-Pischke

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Commercial lenders require capital to bear risk. The capital enhancement guarantee (CEG) encourages lenders to make loans they would not otherwise make, such as microenterprise loans. The CEG is auctioned and awarded to bidders who promise the greatest amount of new lending for a given increment of permanent capital. Whether the incremental lending causes losses or gains for the lender, the incremental capital is free. The CEG subsidizes innovation in risk management. It places the analytical focus on risk and its cost, supports the key party to the lending decision, promotes skill in managing risk, is transparent, minimizes moral hazard, …

Exception Handling In Workflow Systems, Zongwei Luo, Amit P. Sheth, Krzysztof J. Kochut, John A. Miller Sep 2000

Exception Handling In Workflow Systems, Zongwei Luo, Amit P. Sheth, Krzysztof J. Kochut, John A. Miller

Kno.e.sis Publications

In this paper, defeasible workflow is proposed as a framework to support exception handling for workflow management. By using the “justified” ECA rules to capture more contexts in workflow modeling, defeasible workflow uses context dependent reasoning to enhance the exception handling capability of workflow management systems. In particular, this limits possible alternative exception handler candidates in dealing with exceptional situations. Furthermore, a case-based reasoning (CBR) mechanism with integrated human involvement is used to improve the exception handling capabilities. This involves collecting cases to capture experiences in handling exceptions, retrieving similar prior exception handling cases, and reusing the exception handling experiences …

Diversity Of Behaviour During Novel Object Tests Is Reduced In Pigs Housed In Substrate-Impoverished Conditions, Françoise Wemelsfelder, Marie Haskell, Michael T. Mendl, Sheena Calvert, Alistair B. Lawrence Sep 2000

Diversity Of Behaviour During Novel Object Tests Is Reduced In Pigs Housed In Substrate-Impoverished Conditions, Françoise Wemelsfelder, Marie Haskell, Michael T. Mendl, Sheena Calvert, Alistair B. Lawrence

Sentience Collection

Modern intensive farming conditions lack the diversity of substrates present in more natural environments and offer young animals fewer opportunities for interaction. Evidence exists that this may affect the organization of interactive patterns of behaviour, but shifts in behavioural diversity have not been measured directly. We investigated the effect of the substrate in the home pen on the diversity of behaviour in young growing pigs, Sus scrofa. Over 5 months, 26 pigs were housed singly in either substrate-impoverished (SI) or substrate-enriched (SE) conditions. Once every month we recorded the behaviour of these pigs in detail both in the home pens …

Monitoring Cattle Behavior And Pasture Use With Gps And Gis, L. W. Turner, M. C. Udal, B. T. Larson, S. A. Shearer Sep 2000

Monitoring Cattle Behavior And Pasture Use With Gps And Gis, L. W. Turner, M. C. Udal, B. T. Larson, S. A. Shearer

Management and Monitoring of Farm Animals Collection

Precision agriculture is already being used commercially to improve variability management in row crop agriculture. In the same way, understanding how spatial and temporal variability of animal, forage, soil and landscape features affect grazing behavior and forage utilization provides potential to modify pasture management, improve efficiency of utilization, and maximize profits. Recent advances in global positioning system (GPS) technology have allowed the development of lightweight GPS collar receivers suitable for monitoring animal position at 5-min intervals. The GPS data can be imported into a geographic information system (GIS) to assess animal behavior characteristics and pasture utilization. This paper describes application …

Using A Mensuration Approach With Fia Vegetation Plot Data To Assess The Accuracy Of Tree Size And Crown Closure Classes In A Vegetation Map Of Northeastern California, Samantha J. Gill, Jeff Milliken, Debby Beardsley, Ralph Warbington Sep 2000

Using A Mensuration Approach With Fia Vegetation Plot Data To Assess The Accuracy Of Tree Size And Crown Closure Classes In A Vegetation Map Of Northeastern California, Samantha J. Gill, Jeff Milliken, Debby Beardsley, Ralph Warbington

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

The accuracy of the Lassen-Modoc vegetation map was assessed using data from a grid of permanent Forest In-ventory and Analysis (FIA) plots in conjunction with a fuzzy logic approach. This paper presents the results for the Modoc National Forest. The main foci of this paper are the methods and results for assessing the accuracy of tree size and crown closure classes using a mensurational approach based on calculations made from the plot data. This approach proved very useful in conjunction with fuzzy accuracy methods. Higher error rates reported for crown closure classes may be due to a variety of factors …

Ground Water In Northwest Arkansas: Minimizing Nutrient Contamination From Non-Point Sources In Karst Terrane, R. K. Davis, J. V. Brahana, J. S. Johnston

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

The purpose of the project is to evaluate the effectiveness of Best Management Practices (BPMs) in preventing non-point source contamination of the ground-water resources in the karst terrane of northwestern Arkansas. Limestone and dolomite aquifers in the region are highly vulnerable to contamination. Ground-water studies performed in the region during the last two decades indicate degradation of these carbonate aquifers by nutrients and bacteria. The expeditious growth of the poultry industry during this period, in combination with the inordinate population growth of the region constitute a threat to the ground-water resources from both point sources and non-point sources of contamination. …

Illinois River 1999 Pollutant Loads At Arkansas Higway 59 Bridge, Marc A. Nelson, Thomas S. Soerens

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Automatic water samplers and aU. S. Geological Survey gauging station were established in 1995 on the main stem of the Illinois River at the Arkansas Highway 59 Bridge. Since that time, continuous stage and discharge measurements and water quality sampling have been used to determine pollutant concentrations and loads in the Arkansas portion of the Illinois River. This report represents the results from the measurement and sampling for January 1, 1999 to December 31, 1999.

Westminster Democracy: A Comparison Of Small Island States Varieties In The Pacific And The Caribbean, Dag Anckar Sep 2000

Westminster Democracy: A Comparison Of Small Island States Varieties In The Pacific And The Caribbean, Dag Anckar

Pacific Studies

The validity of the suggestion by Arend Lijphart that the structure of consensus democracy may spring from a general cultural inclination toward consensus is investigated by comparing a set of small Pacific and Caribbean island states. All have colonial histories that involve a strong British legacy, and all have been submitted to attempts by the metropolitan power to influence the preparing of the independence constitution. The results indicate that the Pacific islands with long-standing indigenous and consensual cultures and traditions have indeed introduced into their political systems more consensus-based applications of Westminster rule. Controls for the impact on democratic style …

Factors Influencing General Practitioners In The Prescription Of Homeopathic Medicines, Russell Abratt, Julie Lanteigne Sep 2000

Factors Influencing General Practitioners In The Prescription Of Homeopathic Medicines, Russell Abratt, Julie Lanteigne

HCBE Faculty Articles

This study examines the factors influencing general practitioners' prescription behaviour. It differs from previous studies in that the subject is homeopathic medicines and not pharmaceutical drugs. The literature indicates very particular behaviour patterns of doctors prescription behaviour. The present study provides evidence which contradicts the previous studies. There is thus evidence that what applies to the prescription of ethical pharmaceutical drugs does not apply to the prescription of alternative homeopathic medicines. It follows that marketing practices for alternative medicines should differ from those used by pharmaceutical companies.

Special Educators As Coaches To Support Paraprofessional Implementation Of Functional Communication Training, Virginia L. Walker, Megan E. Carpenter, Amy Clausen, Katherine Ealer, Kristin J. Lyon

Publications

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of special educators’ delivery of training that included an initial training session and follow-up coaching on paraprofessional implementation of an evidence-based practice for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Three special educators each trained a paraprofessional in their classroom to implement functional communication training (FCT) to address the challenging behavior of a student with ASD. The training procedures incorporated the following aspects of behavioral skills training: instruction, modeling, rehearsal, and feedback. Training from special educators resulted in high levels of paraprofessional FCT implementation that maintained over time for two paraprofessionals. …
