Modifications By Ehrlich Ascites Tumors, In Vivo, Of The Mouse Hepatic Glucose -6 -Phosphatase System., Jay Wiedemann
Theses and Dissertations
The enzyme glucose-6-phosphatase (Glc-6-Pase, E.C.3.1.9.3) plays a major role in the maintenance of blood glucose levels. Ehrlich ascites tumor cells pose a stress on the host to maintain blood glucose. Therefore, the Glc-6-Pase and associated substrate/product translocases, must function in response to cancer since the enzyme is common to both the glycogenolytic and gluconeogenic processes. Earlier kinetic studies showed there was a diminished inhibition by exogenous Pi of Glc-6-P hydrolysis in native hepatic microsomes of Tumor-bearing mice compared with controls (Lucius et al. (1995) Biochem. J. 311, 537–540). The first purpose of these studies was to determine the time of …

High Phosphorylation Efficiency And Depression Of Uncoupled Respiration In Mitochondria Under Hypoxia, Erich Gnaiger, Gabriela Méndez, Steven C. Hand
Faculty Publications
Mitochondria are confronted with low oxygen levels in the microenvironment within tissues; yet, isolated mitochondria are routinely studied under air-saturated conditions that are effectively hyperoxic, increase oxidative stress, and may impair mitochondrial function. Under hypoxia, on the other hand, respiration and ATP supply are restricted. Under these conditions of oxygen limitation, any compromise in the coupling of oxidative phosphorylation to oxygen consumption could accentuate ATP depletion, leading to metabolic failure. To address this issue, we have developed the approach of oxygen-injection microcalorimetry and ADP-injection respirometry for evaluating mitochondrial function at limiting oxygen supply. Whereas phosphorylation efficiency drops during ADP limitation …

Treatment Outcome In Tension Headache: Disregulation As A Potential Mechanism., Paul Allen Davis
Treatment Outcome In Tension Headache: Disregulation As A Potential Mechanism., Paul Allen Davis
Theses and Dissertations
Although considerable research has demonstrated that progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) is an effective treatment for tension-type headache, the mechanism responsible for its effectiveness has not been determined. Recent findings regarding physiological disregulation and its impact on headache indicate a possible mechanism for the effectiveness of PMR. Physiological disregulation occurs when physiological responses are not appropriately monitored, or when they are monitored correctly but adjustments are not made in an appropriate manner. It is suggested that this disregulation can disrupt homeostasis which then leads to tension-type headache. Because PMR enhances a person's ability to monitor his/her physiology and make necessary adjustments, …
The Utility Of Statement Validity Assessment In Differentiating Between False Reports And True Memories In Children., Marcia Moberg
The Utility Of Statement Validity Assessment In Differentiating Between False Reports And True Memories In Children., Marcia Moberg
Theses and Dissertations
This study was conducted to examine the utility of Statement Validity Assessment (SVA) and Criterion-Based Content Analysis (CBCA) in situations where children give a false report. Twenty-one children, aged 4–5, were interviewed about two true (parent-supplied) events and two false (experimenter-contrived) events eight times over a ten week period using the criterion set forth in SVA (Raskin & Esplin, 1991). The dependent variables were frequency of assent, CBCA scores, and narrative length. Across all three dependent measures, significant differences existed between true and false narratives such that frequency of assent was higher for true narratives, CBCA scores were higher and …

Vector Difference Calculus., Brian John Moritz
Vector Difference Calculus., Brian John Moritz
Theses and Dissertations
The analysis of physical problems on complex structures often involves the use of a lattice model of the underlying physical space. The lattice sites provide a convenient basis for the representation of physical quantities. Analogous to the use of differential forms in continuous space, a discrete formalism is developed in which geometrical simplices can be used as a basis for vector as well as scalar quantities. The space of p-forms at a point in the theory of differential forms is replaced by the lattice vertex and the p-dimensional geometrical simplices which contain it. These p-simplices serve as a basis for …

A New North American Swallowtail Butterfly: Description Of A Relict Subspecies Of Pterourus Troilus (Papilionidae) From The Southern Tip Of Florida, Ronald R. Gatrelle
The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey
A neotype is designated for Papilio troilus Linnaeus, 1758 from Middleton Place Plantation, Charleston County, South Carolina, United States. A neotype is designated for Papilio ilioneus J.E. Smith, 1797 from Burke County, Georgia. Abbot’s ilioneus figures in Smith are the first published representations of nominotypical Pterourus troilus troilus. Papilio troilus variation texanus Ehrmann, 1900 was described from Houston, Texas. The texanus type is in the Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. The name texanus was restricted (by original description) to a gray male form and is not subspecifically available under International Code for Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) article 45.5 or …
