Are Invisible Hands Good Hands? Moral Hazard, Competition, And The Second-Best In Health Care Markets, Martin Gaynor, Deborah Haas-Wilson, William B. Vogt

Economics: Faculty Publications

The nature and normative properties of competition in health care markets have long been the subject of much debate. In this paper we consider what the optimal benchmark is in the presence of moral hazard effects on consumption due to health insurance. Intuitively, it seems that imperfect competition in the health care market may constrain this moral hazard by increasing prices. We show that this intuition cannot be correct if insurance markets are competitive. A competitive insurance market will always produce a contract that leaves consumers at least as well off under lower prices as under higher prices.

Publications from the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy

In July 1997, the Massachusetts State Legislature, recognizing the challenge presented by the problem of substance abuse for women in the criminal justice system, authorized funds to the Department of Public Health’s Bureau of Substance Abuse Services for a study of substance using female offenders to be conducted by the John W. Since March 1998, a group of researchers at the McCormack Institute and the Criminal Justice Center at UMass Boston has gathered and analyzed a wealth of quantitative and qualitative information on women offenders in Massachusetts.

Meeting Psychological Needs In Web-Based Courses For Teachers, Joan Whipp, Heidi Schweizer Oct 2000

Meeting Psychological Needs In Web-Based Courses For Teachers, Joan Whipp, Heidi Schweizer

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Two teacher educators describe their efforts to design and deliver online graduate courses for practicing teachers that meet psychological needs for belonging, freedom, power and fun (Glasser, 1999). Strategies to promote belonging include welcome letters, icebreaker and cooperative learning activities, personal Web pages, liberal office hours, private e-mail messages, and personalized responses to student postings, and public acknowledgement of student accomplishments. To ensure freedom for all participants the authors use minimum participation requirements, clear but flexible deadlines, multiple project options, Internet links, and access to all students' work and projects. To empower their students, the authors provide ample technical support, …

The Establishment Of A Citizens Police Academy Format Into The Palm Beach County School System, Thomas Mccabe Oct 2000

The Establishment Of A Citizens Police Academy Format Into The Palm Beach County School System, Thomas Mccabe

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Trust is an emotion developed over time. Trust is an inner belief, or confidence, that a person, entity, object, or circumstance will act in accordance with one's personal, pre-determined expectations. In communication, we all have an inherent trust that our intended message will be perceived as intended. When there is a misinterpretation, misunderstandmg occurs and communication breakdown results, trust is then lost to a certain degree. Law enforcement is a complex element of our society; there is a necessity for continual clarification of contemporary issues to avoid miscommunication. Law enforcement is a high profile public entity. By it's very nature …

Reconsidering The Reliance Interest, Christopher W. Frost Oct 2000

Reconsidering The Reliance Interest, Christopher W. Frost

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This essay discusses the place of Fuller and Perdue's The Reliance Interest in Contract Damages in the contracts classroom. After first describing my use of The Reliance Interest, I will set out what I consider to be the pedagogical benefits of beginning the course with remedies and the attractiveness of Fuller and Perdue's analytical model in conveying an understanding of the remedial structure. Next, I will discuss the views of critics Craswell, Kelly and Barnes. Finally, I will revisit the place of Fuller and Perdue's work in the contracts course in light of these criticisms.

To Know A Veil, Douglas C. Michael Oct 2000

To Know A Veil, Douglas C. Michael

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Lawyers, judges, law students, and law professors have a love-hate relationship with the doctrine of “piercing the corporate veil”—the idea that shareholders might sometimes be personally liable for the debts of the corporation. It is the subject covered more than all others in courses on corporation law. It is widely litigated, being the subject of thousands of opinions. Yet, for all this attention, it is routinely vilified by the experts. Most commentators recognize that it is jurisprudence without substance.

This Article is an attempt to form a basis for rigorous analysis of virtually every veil-piercing case and to rid the …

An Application Of Rule-Based Forecasting To A Situation Lacking Domain Knowledge, Monica Adya, J. Scott Armstrong, Fred Collopy, Miles Kennedy Oct 2000

An Application Of Rule-Based Forecasting To A Situation Lacking Domain Knowledge, Monica Adya, J. Scott Armstrong, Fred Collopy, Miles Kennedy

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Rule-based forecasting (RBF) uses rules to combine forecasts from simple extrapolation methods. Weights for combining the rules use statistical and domain-based features of time series. RBF was originally developed, tested, and validated only on annual data. For the M3-Competition, three major modifications were made to RBF. First, due to the absence of much in the way of domain knowledge, we prepared the forecasts under the assumption that no domain knowledge was available. This removes what we believe is one of RBF's primary advantages. We had to re-calibrate some of the rules relating to causal forces to allow for this lack …

The Effects Of Patch Properties On The Debonding Behavior Of Patched Beam-Plates, Anette M. Karlsson Oct 2000

The Effects Of Patch Properties On The Debonding Behavior Of Patched Beam-Plates, Anette M. Karlsson

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The debonding characteristics of patched structures are investigated in this study by means of an analytical model. In particular, the effects the lay-up sequence and edge tapering of a carbon-reinforced epoxy patch, as well as the beveling of an aluminum patch, have on the initiation, stability, and extent of the debonding are considered. The results presented show that both the degree of edge-tapering and the patch properties must be carefully selected in order to optimize the patched structure. It is also shown that when designing a patched system, it is important to model the correct boundary and load conditions to …

The Influence Of Orthotic Devices And Vastus Medialis Strength And Timing On Patellofemoral Loads During Running, R. R. Neptune, I. C. Wright, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert Oct 2000

The Influence Of Orthotic Devices And Vastus Medialis Strength And Timing On Patellofemoral Loads During Running, R. R. Neptune, I. C. Wright, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Objective. To use a musculoskeletal model and simulation of running to examine: (1) the influence of two commonly prescribed treatments for patellofemoral pain (vastus medialis oblique strengthening and orthoses) and (2) the functional significance of timing differences between vastus medialis oblique and vastus lateralis on lateral patellofemoral joint loads.

Design. A three-dimensional musculoskeletal model of the lower extremity was used to simulate running at 4 m/s.

Background. Repetitive and excessive joint loading is often associated with overuse injuries that require clinical treatments to reduce pain and restore function. Affecting one in four runners, patellofemoral pain is one …

Shame In Adolescence: A Pilot-Study Utilizing The Thurston-Cradock Test, Renee K.P. Botero

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

This study was designed to contribute evidence for the validity of Thurston-Cradock Test (of Shame) and to contribute to the growing set of empirical studies relating to shame dynamics in adolescence. The Thurston-Cradock Test is a newly published projective instrument for assessing shame dynamics. Its use had previously been limited to adult populations. Subjects were research volunteers at adjudicated and a non-adjudicated private high schools ranging in age from 14-18 years. The adjudicated group included 31 subjects, 15 male and 16 female, while the private school group included 21 subjects, 11 male and 10 female. A comparison of means using …
