System And Method For Digital Simulation Of An Electrical Circuit, Peter M. Maurer Oct 2000

System And Method For Digital Simulation Of An Electrical Circuit, Peter M. Maurer

USF Patents

A system for digital simulation of an electric circuit is disclosed. The system is event driven, and functions on a gate inversion principle, to stimulate an electric circuit. According to the gate inversion principle, any gates or gate arrangements in the circuit for which the input does not change are not simulated. A machine readable circuit description is generated which includes the gates and the gate arrangements for the circuit. Translation means creates data structures suitable for simulation of the circuit. Simulation means creates a program which schedules the simulation of only those gates or gate arrangements whose outputs change …

Inhomogeneous Nucleation In A Quark-Hadron Pphase Transition, P. Shukla, A. K. Mohanty, S. K. Gupta, Marcelo Gleiser Oct 2000

Inhomogeneous Nucleation In A Quark-Hadron Pphase Transition, P. Shukla, A. K. Mohanty, S. K. Gupta, Marcelo Gleiser

Dartmouth Scholarship

The effect of subcritical hadron bubbles on a first-order quark-hadron phase transition is studied. These subcritical hadron bubbles are created due to thermal fluctuations, and can introduce a finite amount of phase mixing (quark phase mixed with hadron phase) even at and above the critical temperature. For reasonable choices of surface tension and correlation length, as obtained from the lattice QCD calculations, we show that the amount of phase mixing at the critical temperature remains below the percolation threshold. Thus, as the system cools below the critical temperature, the transition proceeds through the nucleation of critical-size hadron bubbles from a …

Translated Opinions

Facts: The present case raises the question of liability for damage caused during the course of pilotage of a ship.  A ship and a dock were damaged during the course of the pilotage of a ship in the dock.  The owner of the Ship, Zim Integrated Shipping Services, Ltd. repaired the damage that was caused to the Ship, and demanded that the Ports and Railways Authority reimburse it for the cost of the repair.  The owner based the demand on the negligence of the Ports and Railways Authority and the negligence of the pilot for whose actions it was claimed …

Facilitating Scientific Research: Intellectual Property Rights And The Norms Of Science - A Response To Rai And Eisenberg, Scott F. Kieff Oct 2000

Facilitating Scientific Research: Intellectual Property Rights And The Norms Of Science - A Response To Rai And Eisenberg, Scott F. Kieff

Law and Economics Papers

Arti Rai's article in the Fall 1999 issue of the Northwestern University Law Review explores the proper use of both legal rules and prescriptive norms to shape behavior in the basic biological research community. Rai's article builds upon the extensive work in this area by Rebecca Eisenberg, which first attained prominence through Eisenberg's article in the December 1987 issue of the Yale Law Journal. Eisenberg concludes that the use of patents in the area of basic biological research may frustrate central norms of the community. Rai prescribes concerted public and private action as the best tools for avoiding patents and …

The victim was a Section Leader who had been conducting his duties for three hours when, at 08:45 a deminer informed the victim “that there was a strange object in his excavation lane”. The Section Leader tried to excavate the object but had some difficulty “seeing it clearly because his visor was dirty and scratched. So he raised his visor halfway to see better, than grasped the object with the thumb and forefingers of his left hand and tried to pull and pry the object from the earth with the trowel”. The object detonated.

A Protocol Language Approach To Generating Client-Server Software, Philip K. Chan, Melvin A.L. Douglas Oct 2000

A Protocol Language Approach To Generating Client-Server Software, Philip K. Chan, Melvin A.L. Douglas

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Client-server software is becoming more common as the Internet grows. To ease the burden of repeatedly writing low-level communication and protocol code, we seek to design a protocol language, My Simple Protocol Language (MSPL), that produces the corresponding communication functions. The programmer then supplies the rest of the application-specific code but never modifies the generated code. Besides saving development time, this approach also reduces programming errors. The potential to develop more efficient code also exists once the technique of generating code is mastered. The main contribution, however, is that unlike RPC, Corba or RMI, we provide the user with not …

Search For New Physics In Eμx Data At Dø Using Sleuth: A Quasi-Model-Independent Search Strategy For New Physics, B. Abbott, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Gregory Snow Publications

We present a quasi-model-independent search for the physics responsible for electroweak symmetry breaking. We define final states to be studied, and construct a rule that identifies a set of relevant variables for any particular final state. A new algorithm (“SLEUTH”) searches for regions of excess in those variables and quantifies the significance of any detected excess. After demonstrating the sensitivity of the method, we apply it to the semi-inclusive channel ℯμX collected in 108 pb-1 of pp̅ collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV at the DØ experiment during 1992–1996 at the Fermilab Tevatron. We find no evidence of …
