A Study Of Indiana State University's Pds Partnerships Through Qualitative Review Of Liaison Activities, Collaborative Inquiry, And Teacher Perceptions, Kevin Bruce Bolinger

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of his study was to examine the characteristics of the Professional Development School partnership between Indiana State University and several local school sites to determine the extent of institutional commitment, the roles which are valued and practiced by university liaisons, and the types of collaborative inquiry research which are conducted by university and school personnel. A survey of school teachers within PDS school sites was conducted to elaborate on the perceptions and opinions about the function and results of the PDS partnership. A sample of 425 teachers was non-randomly selected from five PDS sites; 171 teachers completed and …

Alcohol Consumption Patterns, Death Attitudes, And Personal Meaning Among College Women, Christopher Hugh Nolan Jan 2000

Alcohol Consumption Patterns, Death Attitudes, And Personal Meaning Among College Women, Christopher Hugh Nolan

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Viktor Frankl's logotheory proposes that personal meaning in life and the attitudes people hold toward their own subjective mortality play important mediating roles in the way individuals choose to view and conduct their lives. The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of Frankl's existential model in explaining problem drinking among college women by determining whether there are group differences in personal meaning and death attitudes as a function of alcohol consumption patterns. The sample consisted of 154 college women whose patterns of alcohol consumption allowed for participant classification into one of three groups: (a) non-drinkers (n = …

Evaluation Of Packaging Materials Under Vacuum For Potential Use As Internal Cushioning For Semiconductor Industry Vacuum Machinery, Andrew Baisch Jan 2000

Evaluation Of Packaging Materials Under Vacuum For Potential Use As Internal Cushioning For Semiconductor Industry Vacuum Machinery, Andrew Baisch

Theses

This study explores a concept for applying basic packaging materials to an environment of high vacuum. This study identified three basic packaging materials and exposed them to a high vacuum environment to identify visual effects caused by the vacuum. In semiconductor and data storage industries, the machinery needed to ultimately create a computer chip often contains vacuum chambers. A common practice of the industry is to ship this machinery while under a state of high vacuum. There are parts inside these vacuum chambers that need protection from the effects of shock and vibration. By placing a sample of packaging material …

Luminesence Study Of Polymer-Copolymer Blends Using A Carbazole/Iodine Probe/Quencher System, Tammy Davis Jan 2000

Luminesence Study Of Polymer-Copolymer Blends Using A Carbazole/Iodine Probe/Quencher System, Tammy Davis

Theses

The miscibility behavior of binary blends of polystyrene (PS), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and their copolymers was re-evaluated using the luminescence of carbazole (Cz) and its quenching by 4-iodoaniline (I). The chromophore and quencher probes were polymerized into the polymers and copolymers to be blended. These experiments were conducted at room temperature, on thin films, and were compared to the published results of Braun, et. al.13Homopolymer/copolymer blend compositions were selected from regions of miscible, partially miscible, and immiscible phase behavior. The quencher molecule, 4-iodoaniline, was derivatized to form the vinylfunctionalized monomer, N-(4-iodophenyl)maleimide (NIPMI). The synthesis of NIPMI was carried out in …

Estimation Of A Monotone Mean Residual Life, Subhash C. Kochar, Hari Mukerjee, Francisco J. Samaniego Jan 2000

Estimation Of A Monotone Mean Residual Life, Subhash C. Kochar, Hari Mukerjee, Francisco J. Samaniego

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In survival analysis and in the analysis of life tables an important biometric function of interest is the life expectancy at age x,M(x), defined by M(x)=E[X?x|X>x], where X is a lifetime. M is called the mean residual life function. In many applications it is reasonable to assume that M is decreasing (DMRL) or increasing (IMRL); we write decreasing (increasing) for nonincreasing (non-decreasing). There is some literature on empirical estimators of M and their properties. Although tests for a monotone M are discussed in the literature, we are not aware of any estimators of M under these order restrictions. In …

Dissertations and Theses

Earobics Pro PLUS Step I (Earobics I) is a software program designed to increase the auditory processing and phonological awareness skills of children when used in conjunction with traditional intervention. Phonological awareness is the ability to manipulate the sounds of a language and has been shown in previous studies to have a strong relationship with reading ability. Phonological awareness can be taught, and studies have been conducted in an effort to determine effective methods for teaching phonological awareness. No studies have been published on Earobics I to this date.

In this study, the effectiveness of Earobics I was analyzed with …

Correlation Analysis Of Sfi Peculiar Velocities, Stefano Borgani, Luiz N. Da Costa, Idit Zehavi, Riccardo Giovanelli, Martha P. Haynes, Wolfram Freudling, Gary Wegner, John J. Salzer Jan 2000

Correlation Analysis Of Sfi Peculiar Velocities, Stefano Borgani, Luiz N. Da Costa, Idit Zehavi, Riccardo Giovanelli, Martha P. Haynes, Wolfram Freudling, Gary Wegner, John J. Salzer

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present results of a statistical analysis of the SFI catalog of peculiar velocities, a recently completed survey of spiral field galaxies with I-band Tully-Fisher distances. The velocity field statistic utilized is the velocity correlation function, ψ1(r), originally introduced by Górski et al. The analysis is performed in redshift space so as to circumvent potential ambiguities connected with inhomogeneous Malmquist bias corrections. The results from the SFI sample are compared with linear-theory predictions for a class of cosmological models. We generate a large set of mock samples, extracted from N-body simulations, which are used …

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Emissions from household stoves, especially those using solid fuels, can contribute significantly to greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories and have adverse health impacts. Few data are available on emissions from the numerous types of cookstoves used in developing countries. We have systematically measured emissions from 56 fuel/stove combinations in India and China, a large fraction of the combinations in use world-wide. A database was generated containing emission factors of direct and indirect GHGs and other airborne pollutants such as CO2, CO, CH4, TNMHC, N2O, SO2, NOx, TSP, etc. In this paper, we report on the 28 fuel/stove combinations tested …

The Old American, Ernest Hebert Jan 2000

The Old American, Ernest Hebert

Dartmouth Scholarship

In 1746, Nathan Blake, the first frame house builder in Keene, New Hampshire, was abducted by Algonkians and held in Canada as a slave. Inspired by this dramatic slice of history, novelist Ernest Hebert has written a masterful new novel recreating those years of captivity. Set in New England and Canada during the French and Indian Wars, The Old American is driven by its complex, vividly imagined title character, Caucus-Meteor. By turns shrewd and embittered, ambitious and despairing, inspired and tormented, he is the self-styled "king" of the remnants of the first native tribes that encountered the English. Displaced and …

Biological Science In Conservation, David Johns Jan 2000

Biological Science In Conservation, David Johns

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Large-scale wildlands reserve systems offer one of the best hopes for slowing, if not reversing, the loss of biodiversity and wilderness. Establishing such reserves requires both sound biology and effective advocacy. Attempts by The Wildlands Project and its cooperators to meld science and advocacy in the service of conservation is working, but is not without some problems. Scientists and advocates have differences in methods of work, different understandings of the origins and place of values in conservation, and differing expectations about the efficacy of biological information in achieving protection. Despite these differences, successful relationships can be forged where these differences …

Detection Of Co And Dust Emission In Near-Infrared Spectra Of Sn 1998s, Christopher L. Gerardy, Robert A. Fesen, Peter Höflich, J. Craig Wheeler

Dartmouth Scholarship

Near-infrared spectra (0.95 – 2.4 μ m) of the peculiar Type IIn supernova 1998S in NGC 3877 from 95 to 355 days after maximum light are presented. K -band data taken at days 95 and 225 show the presence of the first overtone of CO emission near 2.3 μ m, which is gone by day 355. An apparent extended blue wing on the CO profile in the day 95 spectrum could indicate a large CO expansion velocity (≈ 2000 – 3000 km s − 1). This is the third detection of infrared CO emission in nearly as many Type II …

Faculty Diversity As A Clinical Legal Education Imperative, Jon C. Dubin Jan 2000

Faculty Diversity As A Clinical Legal Education Imperative, Jon C. Dubin

UC Law Journal

Clinical legal education has rapidly evolved from a novelty or boutique offering in law school curricula to a relatively settled and accepted component of the academy. Much has been written about the composition of law and university faculties, the value of faculty diversity in university and traditional law school educational settings, and proposals for reform. However, scant attention has been paid to the composition of the increasingly significant cadre of law professors engaging in clinical teaching and scholarship and the educational and social consequences of the demographic distribution of clinical faculty positions. In this article, Professor Dubin examines and analyzes …

Republican Mothers, Bastards' Fathers And Good Victims: Discarding Citizens And Equal Protection Through The Failures Of Legal Images, Linda Kelly Jan 2000

Republican Mothers, Bastards' Fathers And Good Victims: Discarding Citizens And Equal Protection Through The Failures Of Legal Images, Linda Kelly

UC Law Journal

In Republican Mothers, Bastards' Fathers and Good Victims: Discarding Citizens and Equal Protection Through the Failures of Legal Images, Professor Linda Kelly uncovers the influence of gender images in immigration law. While in many areas of law gender perceptions have been exposed, in immigration law legal images of gender remain unspoken and unchallenged. In the recent decision of Miller v. Albright, the Supreme Court declared that while a woman becomes a parent immediately upon the birth of her child, a man is not legally considered a parent until he assumes post-birth responsibility for his child. Miller challenged a provision of …

The Destruction Of The Outsider In The Plays Of Tennesee Williams, Warren Herbu Jan 2000

The Destruction Of The Outsider In The Plays Of Tennesee Williams, Warren Herbu

Theses : Honours

This thesis explores the theme of the Outsider in the plays of American dramatist, Tennessee Williams. My central line of argument is that these Outsiders are defeated and destroyed by a number of complex personal and societal forces. After defining what it means to be an Outsider in a Williams play, I will proceed to investigate why and how the figure of the Outsider is destroyed in the following: - 27 Wagons Full of Cotton - Portrait of a Madonna - A Streetcar Named Desire - Orpheus Descending - Suddenly Last Summer - Sweet Bird of Youth. The first two …

The Effects Of Conceptual Change On The Transfer Of Established Skills, John Forbes Jan 2000

The Effects Of Conceptual Change On The Transfer Of Established Skills, John Forbes

Theses : Honours

When people practice a task, their performance in terms of speed and accuracy normally improves in a smooth manner that follows a power function. The consistency with which the performance of a wide range of skills conforms to this power function relationship is known as the Power Law of Learning, and has been an important assumption of many of the dominant theories of skill acquisition and transfer. As such, the form of the power function that is derived from the training process has been used to predict performance when task conditions remain constant. However, Speelman and Kirsner (under review) have …

Procedural Justice In Civil Court Mediation : A Critical Review Of The Literature, & Procedural Justice In Civil Court Mediation : Exploring The Instrumental And Non-Instrumental Processes, Jill A. Howieson Jan 2000

Procedural Justice In Civil Court Mediation : A Critical Review Of The Literature, & Procedural Justice In Civil Court Mediation : Exploring The Instrumental And Non-Instrumental Processes, Jill A. Howieson

Theses : Honours

This article provides a comprehensive review of research on the issue of procedural justice in dispute resolution procedures, with a particular focus on mediation. The review traces the history of the literature from the early control models of Thibaut and Walker ( 1975), through to the modem relational model postulated by Lind and Tyler (1992-1998). It discusses the major theoretical models of procedural justice in terms of their implications for legal dispute resolution and focuses on mediation procedures used by the civil courts. The models provide a theoretical base for identifying which psychological processes, namely non-instrumental, instrumental or relational, operate …

Mobile Agents: Motivations And State-Of-The-Art Systems, Robert S. Gray, George Cybenko, David Kotz, Daniela Rus Jan 2000

Mobile Agents: Motivations And State-Of-The-Art Systems, Robert S. Gray, George Cybenko, David Kotz, Daniela Rus

Dartmouth Scholarship

A mobile agent is an executing program that can migrate, at times of its own choosing, from machine to machine in a heterogeneous network. On each machine, the agent interacts with stationary service agents and other resources to accomplish its task. In this chapter, we first make the case for mobile agents, discussing six strengths of mobile agents and the applications that benefit from these strengths. Although none of these strengths are unique to mobile agents, no competing technique shares all six. In other words, a mobile-agent system provides a single general framework in which a wide range of distributed …
