Ingeborg Bachmann And Christa Wolf: Selected Prose And Drama (Book Review), Kathrin M. Bower Jan 2000

Ingeborg Bachmann And Christa Wolf: Selected Prose And Drama (Book Review), Kathrin M. Bower

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

As I read through the selections in Ingeborg Bachmann and Christa Wolf: Selected Prose and Drama I was reminded of the many associations and connections between the two writers that I had found so profound during my graduate school years. While works by Bachmann and Wolf have been translated and are available in English, this is the first volume to juxtapose their writings with the express purpose of highlighting the parallels between them. The editor's introduction seeks to situate the oeuvres of both authors in historical and political context and offers justification for placing the two together in one volume. …

The Child Behavior Checklist And Adhd In Children, Angela Samuel

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study examined the relationship of parental report of behavior ratings as demonstrated by the Attention Scale of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and the diagnosis of ADI-ID. The study was conducted using 50 children who were referred to a summer school program. An Analysis of Variance found gender and ADI-ID diagnosis to be significantly different for Attention Scales of the CBCL. A Chi Square test also found that the CBCL was a significantly better predictor of ADI-ID than the CPT.

A Guide To Avpri Materials On Russian Consuls And Commerce In The Near East, Theophilus C. Prousis Jan 2000

A Guide To Avpri Materials On Russian Consuls And Commerce In The Near East, Theophilus C. Prousis

History Faculty Research and Scholarship

Tsarist expansion against the Ottoman Empire and commercial access to the Black Sea and the Mediterranean broadened the parameters of Russian influence in the Near East in the nineteenth century. For Imperial Russia, the Eastern Question became a complex and multi-faceted issue, encompassing the pursuit of strategic and diplomatic aims in Istanbul, the Straits, and the Balkan peninsula, the protection of Eastern Orthodoxy, and the extension of trade in the Black Sea and the Levant. Commerce and consuls provide windows on Russia’s interaction with the Near East and illuminate the variety of interests which comprised Russia’s Eastern Question.

Cross-Cultural Interpretations Of Fraud: An Attitudinal Study In A Middle Eastern Multinational Corporation, Douglas Moore Watson Jan 2000

Cross-Cultural Interpretations Of Fraud: An Attitudinal Study In A Middle Eastern Multinational Corporation, Douglas Moore Watson

Harold L. Hodgkinson Award for Outstanding Dissertation

This research tested the theory that cultural heritage affects attitudes toward business-related fraud and, as a consequence, influences ethical decisions. A sample of 695 white-collar employees from a Middle Eastern multinational corporation (MNC), who represented nine world cultures, were asked to evaluate scenarios describing five business frauds--bribery, conflict of interest, embezzlement, management fraud, and industrial espionage--against a 7-point Likert-type scale that measured levels of approval. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) of the responses revealed those claiming African, Caribbean/South American, European, Middle Eastern, and North American cultural heritage viewed fraudulent behavior with a greater degree of disapproval than did those claiming Asian, …

K-Vacancy Production In The Collision Of Highly Charged Relativistic Ions With Heavy Atoms, P. K. Khabibullaev, V. I. Matveev, D. U. Matrasulov Jan 2000

K-Vacancy Production In The Collision Of Highly Charged Relativistic Ions With Heavy Atoms, P. K. Khabibullaev, V. I. Matveev, D. U. Matrasulov

Turkish Journal of Physics

A general expression for the cross section of the inelastic collision of relativistic highly charged ion with heavy (relativistic) atoms is obtained using the generalized eikonal approximation. In the ultrarelativistic limit, the obtained formula coincides with a known exact one. As an application of the obtained result, probability and cross section of the K-vacany production in the $U^{92+} - U^{91+}$ collision are calculated.

Thoughts On Some Potential Appellate And Trial Court Applications Of Therapeutic Jurisprudence, Steve Leben Jan 2000

Thoughts On Some Potential Appellate And Trial Court Applications Of Therapeutic Jurisprudence, Steve Leben

Faculty Works

To date, the application of therapeutic jurisprudence principles has been concentrated mainly on specialized trial courts: drug treatment courts, domestic violence courts, criminal courts, and juvenile and family courts. Its application to trial courts generally, as well as its application to the appellate courts, remains largely unexplored. This Article considers three areas in which trial and appellate courts may want to consider applying therapeutic jurisprudence.

My conclusions about the application of therapeutic jurisprudence to the appellate courts are admittedly tentative ones: my day job is sitting as a state general jurisdiction trial judge, not as an appellate court judge. Although …

Salvaging Amistad, Douglas O. Linder Jan 2000

Salvaging Amistad, Douglas O. Linder

Faculty Works

Moviemakers believe that history can be made more dramatic. They add and subtract characters, invent dialogue and scenes, make heroes more heroic, make villains more villainous, correct incorrectness, make ends happier, and turn shades of gray into black or white. They even tell lies-all in the interest of providing a good show, of course. Steven Spielberg, producer-director of the 1997 historical drama "Amistad," is no exception.

Whether Hollywood's reshaping of history is good or bad depends upon whether one believes it is more important to be thoroughly entertained or to have a clear sense of history. Right now, on this …

Thinking Critically About Equality: Government Can Make Us Equal, Robert L. Hayman, Nancy Levit Jan 2000

Thinking Critically About Equality: Government Can Make Us Equal, Robert L. Hayman, Nancy Levit

As kids we called it having to use the old noodle: needing to think real hard about something that was real hard to think about. It was the kind of thinking that would cause your face to get all scrunched up, and if you didn't stop or if someone didn't stop you - it would eventually make your head hurt. The expression came from our families when we figured something out: that's using your old noodle, they'd tell us. The noodle we eventually understood to be our brains, which, we reckon, do look something like noodles, though we were quite …

Before Brown: Charles H. Houston And The Gaines Case, Douglas O. Linder Jan 2000

Before Brown: Charles H. Houston And The Gaines Case, Douglas O. Linder

Faculty Works

In 1895 in Plessy v. Ferguson the Supreme Court announced the legal principle, separate but equal, that would guide American race relations for over half a century. For Charles Houston, the training of black lawyers was a key to mounting an attack on segregation. While at Harvard, Houston wrote that there must be Negro lawyers in every community and that the great majority of these lawyers must come from Negro schools. It was, he concluded, in the best interests of the United States - to provide the best teachers possible at law schools where Negroes might be trained. After graduating …

Second-Parent Adoption By Same-Sex Couples In Ohio: Unsettled And Unsettling Law, Susan J. Becker Jan 2000

Second-Parent Adoption By Same-Sex Couples In Ohio: Unsettled And Unsettling Law, Susan J. Becker

Cleveland State Law Review

In addition to the need for homes for children without any legally recognized parent, the need for a child who already has one legal parent to be adopted by the parent's gay or lesbian partner who is already serving as a de facto parent is very important to the child's emotional stability and material well being. This type of adoption, frequently referred to as a "second-parent" adoption,' is the focal point of this article. However, the matters discussed herein also apply directly and by analogy to situations where gay and lesbian couples and heterosexual unmarried couples desire to jointly adopt …

Decide The Law, Clearly - A Reply To Judge Bettman, Ben Glassman Jan 2000

Decide The Law, Clearly - A Reply To Judge Bettman, Ben Glassman

Cleveland State Law Review

The Honorable Marianna Brown Bettman’s dilemma is roughly this: if a clause of a state constitution is worded similarly to a clause in the federal Constitution, how can a state court develop constitutional law? But in important respects, Judge Bettman's question reflects a misunderstanding of the law. This misunderstanding prevents her from identifying what is really at stake in cases like the one she describes. Judge Bettman seems to have misread Michigan v. Long. The Long Court laid out a clear test for determining the Supreme Court's appellate jurisdiction over state cases where the grounds-federal or state-of the state court's …

Kinetics Of The Photolysis Of Benzenetricarbonylchromium(0) In Chloroform, Leslianna Federici, Patrick E. Hoggard

Chemistry and Biochemistry

In contrast to the photolysis of Cr(CO)3(C6H6) in nonhalogenated solvents, in which the products are CrL(CO)2(C6H6) in the presence of a donor L, or Cr(CO)6 and C6H6 if no donor is present, the photo-reaction in chloroform yields CrCl3. No significant portion of the reaction occurs through absorption of 254nm light by CHCl3• The quantum yield is 1.4, consistent with a mechanism in which several radicals are formed upon chlorination of the chromium, which then cause further decomposition of the reactant. …

Marketing To Hispanics, Jodi Marucheck Jan 2000

Marketing To Hispanics, Jodi Marucheck

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

As Hispanics become more and more visible in the United States, businesses need to recognize this group of consumers as the valuable asset it is. Hispanics are becoming better educated, which leads to higher paying jobs and more buying power. What companies need to realize, though, is that it takes a sincere effort to reach this unique consumer group. Translating the general advertising campaign into Spanish is not sufficient enough to gain this group's loyalty. Companies need to appeal directly to the values and culture of Hispanics in America if they expect to add them to their clientele base. Before …

Enhancing The Use Of Emergency Contraception In A Refugee Setting: Findings From A Baseline Survey In Kakuma Refugee Camps, Kenya, Esther G. Muia, Joyce Olenja

Reproductive Health

In August 1992, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) at the request of the United Nations, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, and the Kenyan Government, initiated a primary health care program in the Kakuma Refugee Camp. Since then, the population of the camp has continued to grow, and activities have moved from a crisis to a maintenance phase. In January 1997, IRC assumed the additional responsibility of the camp hospital, bringing the entire health sector under their management. IRC's programs focus on maintaining and improving public health and promoting self-reliance, particularly of the most vulnerable communities. This project focuses …

Putting Gilmer Where It Belongs: The Faa's Labor Exemption, David E. Feller Jan 2000

Putting Gilmer Where It Belongs: The Faa's Labor Exemption, David E. Feller

Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal

Relying on the Federal Arbitration Act, the Supreme Court in Gilmer v. Interstate/Johnson-Lane Corp. enforced an agreement to arbitrate all disputes to prevent judicial adjudication of a claim under the Americans With Disabilities Act. That decision has led employers of millions of workers to require an agreement to arbitrate future claims of violations of all statutes protecting employment rights as a condition of getting or keeping a job. This article argues that the exemption in Section 1 of the Act of "contracts of employment of seamen, railroad employees, or any other class of workers engaged in foreign or interstate commerce" …

Map-Making Of Plant Biomass And Leaf Area Index For Management Of Protected Areas, Loretta Gratani, Maria Fiore Crescente Jan 2000

Map-Making Of Plant Biomass And Leaf Area Index For Management Of Protected Areas, Loretta Gratani, Maria Fiore Crescente

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

An inventory of the vegetation types of Castelporziano Estate (Rome), including examples of Mediterranean ecosystems in excellent preserved condition, was compiled. Because Leaf Area Index (LAI) changed with forest structure and developmental stages, maximum LAI provided a good estimate of maximum biomass accumulation. Plant biomass estimation, ranging from 61 tons ha-1 to 360 tons ha-1, fitted well into 14 biomass classes; the highest values (from 301 tons ha-1 to 360 tons ha-1) were related to stratified forested vegetation types, including the more mature Pinus pinea plantations, Quercus ilex evergreen forests and broad leaf mixed …

Advertising And The Charter: Just Do It? An Analysis Of The Constitutional Recognition Of Commercial Expression, Andrew Wilson Jan 2000

Advertising And The Charter: Just Do It? An Analysis Of The Constitutional Recognition Of Commercial Expression, Andrew Wilson

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

One area of Charter jurisprudence which has developed a particularly high level of controversy is the recognition of "commercial expression" as falling under the purview of "freedom of expression" and thereby deserving of s. 2(b) Charter protection. The source of this controversy relates to the nature of both the Charter's guarantees and of commercial expression. The Charter is the supreme law of Canada and the main source of our constitutionally guaranteed rights and freedoms. Commercial expression is that expression having the sale of a good or service as its purpose. Commercial expression is, simply put, advertising. Many people no doubt …
