Solid -State Nmr Of High Spin Nuclei With Large Quadrupolar Coupling Constants., Pamela Louise Bryant
Solid -State Nmr Of High Spin Nuclei With Large Quadrupolar Coupling Constants., Pamela Louise Bryant
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The goal of this study is to develop a method of characterizing the aluminum sites in solid aluminum containing systems that are difficult to determine by normal nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, NMR, or X-ray crystallography. Specifically, the aim is to characterize the aluminum sites in the industrial cocatalyst methylaluminoxane, MAO. The structure of MAO, found in both solid and gel form, has not been well determined. First, an automated 27Al (spin 5/2) single-crystal NMR experiment was used to determine the experimental electric field gradient, EFG, of andalusite, a well-studied mineral with large quadrupolar interactions. The experimental results were compared to …
Cancer Mortality And *Environment In Louisiana: A Geographical Inquiry., Mihye Bark
Cancer Mortality And *Environment In Louisiana: A Geographical Inquiry., Mihye Bark
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Cancer is one of the most serious health problems in the U.S. Louisiana mortality rates for all sites of cancer have exceeded national rates since 1950. Even though concern about the issues of environmental cancer is growing, conclusive results have not been reported. Previous studies differed in data source, data quality, time of observation, and statistical procedure, making comparison of results problematic. The spatial patterns of the most common cancer sites in Louisiana (from 1953 to 1993) and their relationships with environmental factors were investigated, using GIS software and statistical software. To provide a clear understanding of how the spatial …

Interaction Between Cognitive Styles And Assessment Approaches., Mehtap Cakan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The present study investigated the interaction of cognitive style and assessment format (multiple-choice (MC) and performance-based assessments (PBA)) in second language proficiency. The participants consisted of 258 eighth-grade students. The second language achievement of the students was assessed by the Eighth Grade Proficiency/Credit Exam: French I. The cognitive style of the students was assessed by the Group Embedded Figures Test. The study also examined study habits and attitudes of field-dependent (FD) and field-independent (FI) students toward the two assessment formats. The study utilized a sequential mixed-model design, consisting of both quantitative and qualitative methods. Phase I consisted of a quantitative …
Locus Of Control, Religious Values, Work Values And Social Policy Choices., Carolyn Kasprzak Falkowski
Locus Of Control, Religious Values, Work Values And Social Policy Choices., Carolyn Kasprzak Falkowski
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Individuals' religious beliefs were examined in terms of their effect on one's positions on various social issues. Beliefs regarding salvation were chosen as beliefs central to a Christian faith. Locus of control and Protestant work ethic were included as related concepts. A sample of Christian (primarily Protestant) seminary students was selected in this study in order to include individuals who are more likely to have actively considered both their theology and their beliefs on social policies. Most of the seminarians expressed a significantly internal locus of control and some acceptance of the concepts included in the Protestant work ethic. Most …
A Novel Experimental Approach To The Explication Of Information Processing Differences Between High And Low Anxious Individuals., Gina M. Manguno-Mire
A Novel Experimental Approach To The Explication Of Information Processing Differences Between High And Low Anxious Individuals., Gina M. Manguno-Mire
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The information processing perspective of cognition and emotion has been a fruitful area of research inquiry in recent years. As a result of this recent spate of interest, emotional processing biases in anxiety have been consistently demonstrated, indicating that anxious individuals possess a processing priority for threatening information. This study is an attempt to further examine the processing biases which characterize anxious and nonanxious individuals. Pilot work was conducted to investigate the utility of a novel approach, the affective categorization task, to examine the affective meaning of lexical stimuli. Pilot research using the affective categorization task with socially anxious individuals …
Congestion Control Mechanisms For Internet Multicast Transport Protocols., Elias George Khalaf
Congestion Control Mechanisms For Internet Multicast Transport Protocols., Elias George Khalaf
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Internet Multicasting has emerged in the last few years as the inevitable method for efficiently delivering replicated data to multiple recipients in large scale internets. More specifically, Reliable Multicast Transport Protocols have been the subject of intensive research in recent years. The goal of such research was mainly to develop reliable and scalable protocols to efficiently and reliably deliver data to receivers, and at the same time reduce congestion on the network. In this research, we propose a new generic family of protocols, called the K family of protocols, that focus on congestion control by reducing the processing requirements on …
Developing Students' Understanding Of Similar Figures: A Perceptual Approach., Danny Ray Mcnabb
Developing Students' Understanding Of Similar Figures: A Perceptual Approach., Danny Ray Mcnabb
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Children encounter and recognize similar figures in their everyday experiences with such things as basketballs, soccer balls, tennis balls, ping-pong balls; or a candy bar that comes in various sizes of the same shape. Yet their school experience with the mathematics of similarity generally does not build on these perceptual intuitions. Traditional mathematics curricula bypass students' visual intuitions and their quantitative understandings, proceeding directly to set piece problems solved by formal algebraic methods. The result for many students is that the topic of similarity contributes to their evolving view of mathematics as a domain of complex procedural methods divorced from …
Masked Criticism: The Whore And The Breeches Role As Articulators Of Sexual Economic Theory In The Intrigue Plays Of Aphra Behn., Mary Katherine Politz
Masked Criticism: The Whore And The Breeches Role As Articulators Of Sexual Economic Theory In The Intrigue Plays Of Aphra Behn., Mary Katherine Politz
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Aphra Behn was an important playwright in the Restoration, second only to John Dryden in the number of plays produced during the period. In some of her early plays based on Spanish intrigue comedies, she uses the roles of whores and cross dressed women to articulate her criticism of the sexual economy within patriarchy. Masks and disguises create confusion in all the plays. Her characters, plots, structure, humor and economic concerns change with each successive play. The first play in the series, The Dutch Lover (1673) is a tale of romance where women are exchanged between men for the benefit …
The Early Local And Regional Immune Response To Recall Inoculations Of Mycobacterium Leprae In The Skin Of Rhesus Macaques (Macaca Mulatta)., Thomas Xavier D Lemarchand
The Early Local And Regional Immune Response To Recall Inoculations Of Mycobacterium Leprae In The Skin Of Rhesus Macaques (Macaca Mulatta)., Thomas Xavier D Lemarchand
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Epidemiological studies have failed to show any important impact of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and disease on leprosy, in contrast to the well documented increase in incidence and morbidity with other mycobacteria in these patients, notably Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The early events following exposure and repeated exposure to Mycobacterium leprae (ML) have not still been studied. Previous studies of first inoculations of ML in the skin of rhesus monkeys have indicated delayed recruitment of CD4+ cells and delayed interleukin (IL) 2 secretion in skin inoculation sites in simian immunodeficiency (SIV) positive animals. The development of the secondary immune response against …
Shaping The Subject In "La Chanson De Roland" And In Hermann Broch's "Der Tod Des Virgil", Thomas Lee Miller
Shaping The Subject In "La Chanson De Roland" And In Hermann Broch's "Der Tod Des Virgil", Thomas Lee Miller
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation explores two texts, each of a different era, language and culture, to discover what they may each tell us about the role played by writing in the construction of subjectivity. Accordingly, the first part of the dissertation departs from custom in treating La Chanson de Roland less as a repository of accumulated oral performance than as a document of singular textual integrity. Militating against the premise of textual unity is the uncontested fact that the Roland is clearly divided into two distinct narrative panels. This reading reveals the manner in which the writer of the Roland integrates the …
Mapping Quantitative Trait Loci Controlling The Early Height Growth Of Longleaf Pine And Slash Pine., Changren Weng
Mapping Quantitative Trait Loci Controlling The Early Height Growth Of Longleaf Pine And Slash Pine., Changren Weng
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The delay in early height growth (EHG) known as the "grass stage" has been one important factor that limits the artificial regeneration of longleaf pine (Pinus palstris Mill.). Genetic improvement of the "grass stage" by interspecific hybridization between longleaf pine and slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm) followed by recurrent backcrosses aiming at the introgression of genes controlling the EHG from slash pine into longleaf pine may be a solution. Developing markers tightly linked to these genes and using them in backcross breeding programs may speed the process of the introgression. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were employed to map …
What Goes On In Cross -Language Encounters: The Tactics And Strategies Of Interactional Grammar., Stuart Lee Stewart
What Goes On In Cross -Language Encounters: The Tactics And Strategies Of Interactional Grammar., Stuart Lee Stewart
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This investigation involves analysis of cross-language encounters (CLEs), spoken discourse between native speakers (NSs) and non-native speakers (NNSs) of Spanish involved in two types of interactions: simulated service encounters and free conversation. I use a multi-tiered framework comprised of: (1) Schiffrin's (1994) functionalist approach, (2) a model of interactional grammar adapted from Ochs, Schegloff and Thompson (1996), and (3) one of the principal assumptions from conversation analysis, which focuses on the organization of interaction, while maintaining that participants' behavior provides evidence for the units, patterns and rules that are a part of all spoken interaction. Tactics and strategies examined include …
Evaluation Of Insecticide Resistance In Louisiana Adult Mosquitoes And The Efficacies Of Selected Larvicides., Stacy Lee Bearden
Evaluation Of Insecticide Resistance In Louisiana Adult Mosquitoes And The Efficacies Of Selected Larvicides., Stacy Lee Bearden
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Pesticide resistance in Louisiana mosquitoes has never been examined on a state-wide basis. In 1996, first component of this monitoring program examined selected pesticide efficacies and documented current pesticide resistance. Ground ULV-applied FyfanonRTM (96.8% malathion and Pyrocide RTM (96.8% + 1% natural pyrethrum) were applied to caged Culex quinquefasciatus adults (Denham Springs [Livingston Parish] and Lake Charles [Calcasieu Parish]) and Aedes sollicitans (Vermilion Parish). FyfanonRTM caused significantly different (p < 0.05) mortalities among each species and strain within 24hrs (95% Aedes, 48% Denham Springs, and 14% Lake Charles). Pyrocide RTM also produced significantly different mortalities (99%, 70%, and 38%, respectively). Malathion and permethrin were topically applied to 3--5 day old adult mosquitoes from 14 parishes. St. Martin parish Cx. quinquefasciatus was most susceptible to malathion (2.58 mug/mul), and the Vermilion strain was most resistant (417.05 mug/mul). Resistance is based on a ≥5-fold resistance ratio. Calcasieu parish strain was least resistant to permethrin (1.93 mug/mul), and the St. Tammany parish strain was most resistant (40.86 mug/mul). Detecting pesticide resistance by bottle bioassay technique was compared to topical bioassay. Both techniques were effective in detecting resistance for selected Aedes, Anopheles, and Culex species in Louisiana. Ground ULV 97% malathion was applied to caged Cx. quinquefasciatus adults from a mosquito abatement district, agrichemical farmland, and a susceptible colony. No significance (p > 0.05) existed in mosquito mortality between the agrichemical area and the abatement district. Bacillus thuringiensis var. israeliensis (VectoBacRTM WDG and VectoBacRTM 12AS) and Bacillus sphaericus (VectoLexRTM WDG and VectoLexRTM CG) were …
Extending The Revelation Effect To Faces: Haven't We Met Before?, Jeffrey Roy Wilson
Extending The Revelation Effect To Faces: Haven't We Met Before?, Jeffrey Roy Wilson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The revelation effect is an episodic memory phenomenon where participants are more likely to report that they recognize an item when it has been revealed in some way than when it has not. Although this effect is robust with respect to words, it has not been demonstrated with faces. The present series of experiments examined whether a revelation effect could be produced in face recognition memory. A revelation effect was found in 2 of 3 experiments using only faces for stimuli. Surprisingly, an anti-revelation effect was found in Experiment 4 when words were revealed before face recognition. The findings are …
Interaction Of Antimicrobial Peptides With Model Cell Membranes., Lucille Dionne Smith Wright
Interaction Of Antimicrobial Peptides With Model Cell Membranes., Lucille Dionne Smith Wright
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This research was part of a multidisciplinary effort aimed at the elucidation of the mechanism of membrane lysis by model peptides. The focus of the dissertation was to characterize the average size dimensions of model cell membranes before and after being treated by model peptides. Experiments with neutral dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC) vesicles and negatively charged dioleoylphosphabdylcholine/dioleoylphosphabdylglycerol (DOPC/DOPG) vesicles were conducted using the model peptides (KLAKKLA) 3 and (KLGKKLG)3. A melittin study was conducted alongside for comparison. Changes in membrane integrity were studied as a function of lipid-to-peptide (L:P) ratio using three techniques: kinetic light scattering (KLS), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and …

Ecology Of Seagrass Fishes And Macroinvertebrates On Guatemala's Atlantic Coast., Alejandro Arrivillaga
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The ecology of fishes and macroinvertebrates inhabiting shallow seagrass beds was studied at Bahia La Graciosa, located in Amatique Bay in the Caribbean coast of Guatemala. The study area included extensive turtle grass, Thalassia testudinum, meadows over muddy substrate, whereas a more exposed shoreline also supported turtle grass meadows over sandy substrates outside the bay. A total of 166 samples were collected across two seasons and habitat types in three sampling trips to the area with a cylindrical drop sampler. Diversity and abundance of fishes and macroinvertebrates inhabiting seagrass and adjacent bare-sand sites were described to assess the relative importance …
Systematics Of The Polymorphic North American Rat Snake (Elaphe Obsoleta)., Frank Thomas Burbrink
Systematics Of The Polymorphic North American Rat Snake (Elaphe Obsoleta)., Frank Thomas Burbrink
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The North American rat snake (Elaphe obsoleta) complex is composed of seven uniquely colored subspecies of E. obsoleta and the sister species E. bairdi. Maximum parsimony (MP) and maximum likelihood (ML) analysis of two mitochondrial DNA genes from 73 E. obsoleta and E. bairdi, produced well-supported trees that do not conform to the currently accepted subspecies. Both ML and MP trees were significantly shorter than the trees in which each subspecies was constrained to be monophyletic. The subspecies of E. obsoleta do not represent genetic lineages. Instead, molecular evidence revealed the existence of four well-supported mtDNA clades confined to particular …
Simulations And Algorithms On Reconfigurable Meshes With Pipelined Optical Buses., Anu Goel Bourgeois
Simulations And Algorithms On Reconfigurable Meshes With Pipelined Optical Buses., Anu Goel Bourgeois
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Recently, many models using reconfigurable optically pipelined buses have been proposed in the literature. A system with an optically pipelined bus uses optical waveguides, with unidirectional propagation and predictable delays, instead of electrical buses to transfer information among processors. These two properties enable synchronized concurrent access to an optical bus in a pipelined fashion. Combined with the abilities of the bus structure to broadcast and multicast, this architecture suits many communication-intensive applications. We establish the equivalence of three such one-dimensional optical models, namely the LARPBS, LPB, and POB. This implies an automatic translation of algorithms (without loss of speed or …
A Cultural Genealogy Of The Royal Court Theatre: The Renovation Of A Theatre And An Ideal., Stephen Douglas Berwind
A Cultural Genealogy Of The Royal Court Theatre: The Renovation Of A Theatre And An Ideal., Stephen Douglas Berwind
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Royal Court Theatre's current renovation invites a reexamination of the English Stage Company (ESC). The ESC has entered a crucible of change, raising new questions concerning the Royal Court's architectural semiotics and company's aesthetic mission as London's most acclaimed producer of new plays. This study seeks to understand the ways in which its identity has been shaped and consolidated over the last forty-two years and how the current chapter in ESC history redefines the company's identity and future achievement. The English Stage Company took over the Royal Court in early in 1956. The ESC's marriage with the theatre appears …
Psychosocial Correlates Of Decision Certainty In Academic Major Selection Of College Students., Claire Bienvenu
Psychosocial Correlates Of Decision Certainty In Academic Major Selection Of College Students., Claire Bienvenu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study explored relationships between several psychosocial variables and academic major decision certainty. Specifically, the study purpose was four-fold. First, this study attempted to expand the traditional conceptual framework for understanding academic major selection by creating a new construct of academic major decision certainty. Second, incorporated in this study was development of new instruments to measure academic major decision certainty, student academic self-appraisal, and student academic major self-efficacy motivation. Third, this study utilized social cognitive theory to better understand academic major decision certainty as a complex, multi-faceted construct. Finally, because the sample utilized in this Study extended to all subsets …
Hearsay, Testimony And Conference: Citationality In The Works Of Marguerite Duras, Maurice Blanchot And Jacques Derrida., Mary Carla Criner
Hearsay, Testimony And Conference: Citationality In The Works Of Marguerite Duras, Maurice Blanchot And Jacques Derrida., Mary Carla Criner
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation involves an examination of the effects and implications of three modes of citationality: hearsay, testimony and conference. As a term coined by Jacques Derrida, citationality involves the problematization of questions related to borders and limits and to the attempt to re-present the originary event thought to lie beyond the performance of citational acts of bearing witness. In chapter one I situate my project theoretically through an examination of the principles of deconstruction. In particular, Jacques Derrida's work on the metaphysical concepts of presence and speech, in terms of repeatability or iterability, bears heavily on my study. As a …
Successful Pirates And Capitalist Fantasies: Charting Fictional Representations Of Eighteenth- And Early Nineteenth -Century English Fortune Hunters., Robert Gordon Dryden
Successful Pirates And Capitalist Fantasies: Charting Fictional Representations Of Eighteenth- And Early Nineteenth -Century English Fortune Hunters., Robert Gordon Dryden
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Successful Pirates and Capitalist Fantasies investigates British pirate fiction during the emergence of capitalism. I initially began my dissertation with the intention of focusing on historical pirates, privateers, and common sailors (the men who "turned" pirate) in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, but after close readings of pirate ballads, rogue biographies, plays, novellas, and novels by (among others) Daniel Defoe, John Gay, Charles Johnson, and Jane Austen, I determined that this pirate fiction is not about the historical pirate at all; the deployment of pirate figures in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century British fiction is an invented tradition of representation that …
Ships, Souls, And The Administration Of The Knights Of St. John In The Fourteenth Century., Mark S. Dupuy
Ships, Souls, And The Administration Of The Knights Of St. John In The Fourteenth Century., Mark S. Dupuy
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
For a variety of reasons, the history of crusading in the later middle ages (after c. 1300) has, until recently, been a topic largely ignored by historians. Acre, the last Christian outpost in Palestine, fell in 1291, and within twenty years, one of the major corporations associated with the crusading movement, the Knights Templar, came under attack and were ultimately suppressed as a religious order. With the lack of attention to the crusade in the later middle ages came a lack of attention to the 'crusading orders;' few historians chose to make either topic a focus of study, and many …
Multiple Bus Networks For Binary -Tree Algorithms., Hettihewage Prasanna Dharmasena
Multiple Bus Networks For Binary -Tree Algorithms., Hettihewage Prasanna Dharmasena
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Multiple bus networks (MBN) connect processors via buses. This dissertation addresses issues related to running binary-tree algorithms on MBNs. These algorithms are of a fundamental nature, and reduce inputs at leaves of a binary tree to a result at the root. We study the relationships between running time, degree (maximum number of connections per processor) and loading (maximum number of connections per bus). We also investigate fault-tolerance, meshes enhanced with MBNs, and VLSI layouts for binary-tree MBNs. We prove that the loading of optimal-time, degree-2, binary-tree MBNs is non-constant. In establishing this result, we derive three loading lower bounds Wn …
Caring For The Soul In A Postmodern Age: The Political Thought Of Jan Patocka., Edward Francis Findlay
Caring For The Soul In A Postmodern Age: The Political Thought Of Jan Patocka., Edward Francis Findlay
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study undertakes to examine the political thought of the late Czech philosopher and Charter 77 spokesman, Jan Patocka. It leads to a consideration of the fundamental problem of contemporary and postmodern theory, the question of a metaphysical foundation for our philosophical and political self-understanding. Patocka asserted the common origin of philosophy and politics in ancient Greece and maintained that their animating force was freedom, understood ontologically as our ability to transcend the merely objective and relative in life and to see human being as a being of possibility. He called this insight, embodied in the activity of Socrates, the …
Effects Of Suggestive Questioning On Women's Self -Report Of Pain Information Following Colposcopy., Jodie Rabalais Guth
Effects Of Suggestive Questioning On Women's Self -Report Of Pain Information Following Colposcopy., Jodie Rabalais Guth
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examined the effects of suggestive questioning on women's retrospective ratings of pain and anxiety experienced during colposcopy. The wording of questions was varied between participants (Pain Suggesting, Pain Denying, or No Suggestion). Number of recall sessions was also varied between participants in that some participants completed two ratings (Immediate and Delayed Recall) while others completed only one rating (Delayed Recall). Trait anxiety, pain severity at the time of the memory task, and medical procedure (whether or not the patient underwent a biopsy) were included in the analyses as covariates. Ratings of sensory and affective pain severity as well …
Comparison Of Biogeochemical Functions Between Restored And Natural Bottomland Hardwood Wetlands., Rachael Grimsley Hunter
Comparison Of Biogeochemical Functions Between Restored And Natural Bottomland Hardwood Wetlands., Rachael Grimsley Hunter
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this research was to compare biogeochemical functions of restored and natural bottomland hardwood (BLH) wetlands to determine if re-establishment of hydrology and vegetation is equivalent to restoration of ecosystem function. Three wetland types were studied: natural BLH (NAT), restored with hydrology re-established (RWH), and restored without hydrology re-established (RWOH). Denitrification potential (DEA), soluble organic carbon (SOC), soil moisture, readily mineralizable carbon (RMC), and heterotrophic microbial activity were measured seasonally from 1997--99. Leaf litter mass, total carbon and nitrogen concentrations, moisture, and microbial activity were also measured at three soil depths in study wetlands. The effect of organic …

Decision making in welding is very important for achieving a good quality welded joint for the least possible cost. Of particular interest is decision making involving the selection of process, parameters, weld procedure specification, defect analysis and trouble shooting. This research has provided a means of capturing the planning knowledge in a Neuro-Expert System in a form that is capable of learning new information, correcting old information and automating the decision-making process in a welding environment. A strategy is formulated for the representation of knowledge in the form of a neural links and the translation of rules into neural link …
Rights Of Passage: A Cross -Cultural Study Of Maroon Novels By Black Women., Randi Gray Kristensen
Rights Of Passage: A Cross -Cultural Study Of Maroon Novels By Black Women., Randi Gray Kristensen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study investigates the use and implications of the trope of marronage, the African-American practice of self-emancipation to forge alternative New World communities, in selected novels by Black women writers of North America and the Anglophone and Francophone Caribbean. It draws on theories of liminality to posit a theory of liberatory practice that deconstructs hegemonic narratives, both personal and historical. Postmodern approaches are deferred in favor of locating these texts and their concerns as deriving from the epistemological consequences of modernity. Cross-cultural Black women's texts were chosen to illuminate the recognition of shared subjugations across national and linguistic borders, as …
