Research On Vocational Education And Training As A Field For Knowledge Development: Starting Points For The Cedefop Research Arena, Pekka Kämäräinen
International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference
The paper provides an insight into the process of developing the CEDEFOP Research Arena (CEDRA) as a new kind of research-oriented knowledge resource environment. CEDEFOP is the European Union agency for development of vocational education and training (VET) in the EU Member States and in the associated countries. The main questions are: 1) How to interpret the foundations of VET-related research as cornerstones for knowledge development? 2) How to interpret the significance of European research and development programmes for knowledge development in the field of VET? 3) How to interpret the role of ‘communities of practice’ within VET-related knowledge development?

Knowledge Development At The Interface Of Research, Policy And Practice: Support For Knowledge Development Within The Cedefop Research Arena (Cedra), Graham Attwell, Alan Brown
International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference
This paper outlines the underpinning theory and technology supporting processes of knowledge development within the CEDEFOP Research Arena (CEDRA). The support for dispersed communities of practice has been developed using web-based collaboration and knowledge sharing tools. These provide a comprehensive telematic platform for interactive and focused knowledge sharing and transformation for practitioners, policy makers, and researchers interested in vocational education and training in Europe. Note some details of how these tools work in practice, in the context of careers guidance, is given in the linked paper of Brown and Attwell (2000).

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference
The Virtual Training Center (VTC) integrates the ideas of media-based learning environments into the idea of the learning platform which has increasingly influenced theoretical discussions at international congresses (e.g. Learntec 2000, Karlsruhe, see www.learntec.de). The VTC simulates a training center in the web and serves as a platform of internet or intranet based courses and self-learning media. Seminars and workshops can be held, media and documents can be worked on and administered and know-how can be exchanged. The basic idea of the VTC is to create a web-based infrastructure which shelters all possibilities of web-based teaching, learning and training.

While the power and potential of technology is clear, the challenges lie in using technology wisely to advance the lifelong skills. The educational arena of web based learning is still in its infancy. While there are many institutions that are offering web based courses for adult learners, an in-depth understanding of the pedagogical issues related to integrating adult learning in web still remains an unexplored frontier. While literature provides some evidence of the effectiveness of using …

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference
This paper is set upon the scenario of a synergy from two leading technical education institutions in their joining exercise of providing an industry-oriented curriculum for a university level degree course. A course model of Pro-Trainer One is devised to foster this initiative at the first evaluation year in which the result was demanded to be effective. The strategy of developing material toward this exercise is demonstrated and the evaluation of this synergy is also examined. What’S Happening In Your Teacher Education Program?, C. Gloria Heberley
International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference
Six questions are presented, the answers to which will enable program administrators to gain valuable insights to their current or proposed teacher education program. Consideration of program aspects as perceived by participants at all levels can assist in the planning of appropriate interventions to mitigate complications. The questions were used in a recent study of the alternative vocational teacher education program at Temple University, known as VITAL. Responses to the questions revealed a cluster of themes that converged to form a concept identified as “generative” leadership. Generative leadership appears to be a major influence in the success of that program. …

Staff development is one of the pillars of organisational advancement. A welltrained employee has the capacity to increase the organisational output and improve his/her individual social capacity. The conventional method of staff development trains each tier of decision-makers for their particular skill needs. The problem with this model is that capital gain and financial results might be the only mutual outcome of these training. The proposed model sees the staff as individuals who might have similar needs and interests towards certain philosophical and cultural views holding the organisation together. The model, already in practice in one of the Pacific Island …
