Nordinfo: Research And Academic Library Cooperation Across National Borders, Sigrún Klara Hannesdóttir Oct 2000

Nordinfo: Research And Academic Library Cooperation Across National Borders, Sigrún Klara Hannesdóttir

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

NORDINFO, the Nordic Council for Scientific Information was founded as a bridge between research libraries and the growing information and documentation sector. NORDINFO’s secretariat was set up in Helsinki, Finland, and some permanent staff 6 was appointed to coordinate the activities. The full name behind the acronym was “The Nordic Cooperative Council for Research Libraries and Scientific Information and Documentation.”

When looking at the history of Nordic research library cooperation, it is clear that the members of the committee that suggested the establishment of an institution that would combine librarianship, documentation and information were people that understood what developments were …

The Americans With Disabilities Act And Academic Libraries In The Southeastern United States, Linda Lou Wiler, Eleanor Lomax Oct 2000

The Americans With Disabilities Act And Academic Libraries In The Southeastern United States, Linda Lou Wiler, Eleanor Lomax

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Individuals with disabilities are one of the fastest-growing segments of United States society. In 1970, 11.7% of the United States population was limited in activity, a major factor in measuring and identifying people with disabilities. In 1990, because of the aging of America, 13.7 % of the population could be so identified. By 1994, 15% of the population fell into this group. During this latter period, the older population stayed fairly stable but children and younger adults with disabilities increased greatly. Many different figures, depending upon the method of counting, e.g., age groups included, or whether residence was in a …

A Survey Of Four Libraries In Kunming: Library Automation And Modernization In A Far Removed Province In China, Jianli Li, Mary Francis Marx

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

As of 2000, over the last fifteen years, in a major effort at modernization and with an increasing investment by the Chinese government, China established more than twenty national information systems. The libraries we visited were member of some of those national information systems. These national information systems have been charged with setting up the basic foundations of an information industry. They belong to, respectively, the Education System, the Cultural Ministry, the Science and Technology Committee System, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

This study compares and contrasts InfoTrac and ProQuest primarily as full-text resources to supplement retrieval of references contained in the CINAHL database. These databases are analyzed by examining their scope in terms of the number and types of serials covered within specific areas using Ulrich's subject headings. Another important aspect of this study relates to the effectiveness of the two search engines for end-user retrieval and collection development.

The Picture Changes Stylistic Variation In Sitting Bull's Biographies, Barbara Risch Oct 2000

The Picture Changes Stylistic Variation In Sitting Bull's Biographies, Barbara Risch

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Until the 1800s Indian warriors of the Plains recorded significant heroic events from their adventures and pursuits in pictographs, on hide. Then, during the nineteenth century, these pictographs began to be produced on paper as well. About the same time that paper was coming into use, canvas and muslin became available, and the drawings that had formerly been composed on hide began to appear on these new materials. Typically, Indian men made use of discarded or captured ledgers, memorandum books, or rosters to render their exploit narratives; the representation of such events on these materials is referred to as ledger …

"Drainage, Drainage, Drainage" Creating Natural Disasters In Southeastern Nebraska, William Keith Guthrie Oct 2000

"Drainage, Drainage, Drainage" Creating Natural Disasters In Southeastern Nebraska, William Keith Guthrie

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In May 1950 the Little Nemaha River valley in the southeastern quadrant of Nebraska suffered a record-breaking flood. For a short time at the town of Syracuse, the Little Nemaha River, which drained a watershed of 218 square miles, had an estimated discharge of 225,000 cubic feet per second. This was larger than any flood recorded since 1928 on the Missouri River at Omaha, which drained a watershed of 322,000 square miles! During this storm and flood twenty-three people lost their lives, fourteen in the Little Nemaha Valley. As night came on, floodwaters swept a commercial bus off a highway …

A Physicist In Honors, Len Zane

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

I have been asked to provide a retrospective connecting my recent decision to resign as dean of the Honors College at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) with my involvement in NCHC as a proponent for the inclusion of more and better mathematics and science in honors education. My career in honors began in 1985 when I was appointed the first director of UNL V's Honors Program and formally ended this past summer with my return to the Physics Department at UNL V. During the period between the Pittsburgh conference in 1995 and the San Francisco conference in 1996, …

Grant Support From The National Science Foundation To Improve Undergraduate Education For All Students In Science And Mathematics, Engineering And Technology, Herbert Levitan

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

The articles in this special issue of the Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council focus on honors courses and programs that include science, mathematics and/or technology education in an innovative way. My objective is to describe a program offered by the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Division of Undergraduate Education that supports the development of such courses and programs. In addition, I will indicate several reasons why faculty associated with honors programs may be particularly well positioned to submit competitive proposals to this program, as well as particular challenges that proposals from honors programs may face.

A Biochemist In Honors, Dail Mullins

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

In 1984-quite unlike the depressed protagonist of George Orwell's novel-I found myself happily ensconced as a senior research associate in the department of biochemistry and molecular genetics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). I had received my Ph.D. in biochemistry from the same institution nine years earlier; had left for two years to do a post-doctoral fellowship in the field of cancer biology at Georgetown University and the National Institutes of Health; but had returned to U AB at the invitation of my doctoral mentor, Jim Lacey, to work on a project grant he had been awarded from …

Review Of Winnipeg: A Prairie Portrait By Martin Cash, Geoffrey C. Smith Oct 2000

Review Of Winnipeg: A Prairie Portrait By Martin Cash, Geoffrey C. Smith

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The purpose of this attractively produced book, a 125th anniversary project of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, is to celebrate the city at the threshold of the new millennium. Its author, a business writer for a local newspaper, is supported by a collaborative team that includes two writer-reporters and two photographers. The text, snappy and essentially journalistic in character, is organized into two main parts. The first ten chapters offer brief overviews of Winnipeg's history and contemporary aspects of the city's business activities, financial services, communications, arts, educational resources, healthcare facilities, recreational opportunities, and wider social fabric. The second part …

Great Plains Pragmatist Aaron Douglas And The Art Of Social Protest, Audrey Thompson Oct 2000

Great Plains Pragmatist Aaron Douglas And The Art Of Social Protest, Audrey Thompson

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Like most of the luminaries of the Harlem Renaissance, its leading visual artist, Aaron Douglas, was not himself a product of Harlem.1 Although Winold Reiss and Alain Locke were to guide Douglas in the development of his artistic vision once he arrived in Harlem, his early years in Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska gave rise to both the communal values and the artistic sense of isolation that were to lead him to Harlem. It was in the black church and in Topeka's "cohesive and politically active" African-American community that Douglas first experienced black solidarity and embraced "the values of education …

Rethinking Human Services For Latinos In The Plains: New Paradigms And Recommendations For Practice, Robert Moreno, Lawrence P. Hernandez, Jennifer Schroeder, Ani Yazedijan Oct 2000

Rethinking Human Services For Latinos In The Plains: New Paradigms And Recommendations For Practice, Robert Moreno, Lawrence P. Hernandez, Jennifer Schroeder, Ani Yazedijan

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

In this paper we provide human service professionals with a foundation for understanding the cultural and programmatic issues necessary for effectively addressing the needs of Latinos within a context of demographic transition and decreases in public support for educational attainment, physical and mental health, and occupational success. A long tradition of deficit thinking has shaped many of the current models employed when addressing the needs of Latinos. The authors suggest "community/culturally centered" or "strengths-based" approaches, such as community based organizations (CBOs), as promising alternatives to current practices. Coalitions among CBOs can be the most effective method in creating and sustaining …

Introduction: Latinos On The Great Plains: An Overview, Refugio Rochin

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

I am pleased to join co-editors Gus Carlo and Miguel Carranza in this special issue of Great Plains Research, focusing on the "Latino Experience on the Great Plains." As an invited contributor to this issue, I have decided to write from my personal knowledge and experiences as the former director of the Julian Samora Research Institute at Michigan State University from July 1994 through July 1998. It was during this time that I worked closely with a number of midwestern scholars to promote the most extensive studies and reports on Latinos of the heartland, including the Great Plains. At …

Modifications To An Existing Glycol Retention Pond And Alternative Technologies Review For Aircraft Deicing Operations And Glycol Recovery And Treatment: Dane County Regional Airport, Steven J. Sletten

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to review new aircraft deicing technologies and developments and surmise which approach may be the most appropriate for the Dane County Regional Airport’s (KMSN) expansion plans, size, available funds, and environmental impact reduction efforts. This paper focuses on the emerging glycol source reduction issues that may be most suitable for this particular airport. A new deicing technology at KMSN would reduce the amount of aircraft deicing fluid used, allow for effacing flight operations, limit environmental impact, and lessen the costs of maintaining and operating the current glycol fluid recovery and treatment system.

An Ameliorated Prediction Of The Empennage In-Flight Gust Loads For A General Aviation Aircraft, Philippe Marchand Oct 2000

An Ameliorated Prediction Of The Empennage In-Flight Gust Loads For A General Aviation Aircraft, Philippe Marchand

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Airplanes often operate beyond their original design load profiles. Aviation opens so many new possibilities and wide variety of possible activities that it is hard for designers to foresee all loading spectra that the airplane structure will experience throughout its life. Nevertheless, the aircraft structures are required to be designed to failsafe or safe-life criteria to be certified by the FAA. AFS-120 provides a database of normal accelerations that can be used to derive airplane wing loads. ACE-100 describes an acceptable method for determining the fatigue life of an empennage based on the same normal acceleration data provided in AFS-120. …
