Synthesis And Testing The Intermediacy Of Diketopiperazines In The Biosynthesis Of Ecteinascidins, Shanti Jeedigunta Jan 2000

Synthesis And Testing The Intermediacy Of Diketopiperazines In The Biosynthesis Of Ecteinascidins, Shanti Jeedigunta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Ecteinascidin 743 is a trace secondary metabolite isolated from the marine tunicate, Ecteinascidia turbinata. Ecteinacidin 743 a most potent antitumor agent, is currently in Phase II clinical trials in Europe and in the USA. A cell-free extract of Ecteinascidia turbinata was used to investigate the biogenetic origin of the ecteinascidins. Incubation experiments with radiolabeled diketopiperazines indicated that the diketopiperazine of tyrosine is the first committed intermediate in the biosynthesis of ecteinascidins. Phenylalanine diketopiperazine was not transformed into the ecteinascidins indicating that this cyclic dipeptide is not an intermediate in the biosynthesis of ecteinascidins. The diketopiperazine of DOPA was used as …

Struggles From Outside And Within The Bars Of The Juvenile Justice System: Role Conflict Of Health Care Delivery, Gayle. Kite Jan 2000

Struggles From Outside And Within The Bars Of The Juvenile Justice System: Role Conflict Of Health Care Delivery, Gayle. Kite

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Currently, the nation is plagued with multiple social problems. Violence is the nation's top public health concern. President Clinton has attempted to address the nation's health care crisis without success. State nursing associations are concerned with unlicensed health care being rendered in the national system; this has caused divisions of the professions. All of these problems can be found in the setting of juvenile corrections. Inmates are the only group in this nation who have a constitutional right to healthcare. In Sunshine County (fictitious name), Florida, corrections staff, not licensed healthcare givers, are rendering most of the health care. This …

The Effect Of Filtered Roadway Lighting On Nesting By Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta Caretta L.), Jeffrey P. Pennell Jan 2000

The Effect Of Filtered Roadway Lighting On Nesting By Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta Caretta L.), Jeffrey P. Pennell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The purpose of this study was to determine if filtered street lighting affected the nesting behavior of loggerhead sea turtles ( Caretta caretta L.). My study site was a nesting beach at Carlin Park, Jupiter, Florida. During the 1999 nesting season, portions of the beach were either kept dark or were illuminated by four 70 W high-pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights, each housed in a cut-off fixture covered by an acrylic (model #2422) filter. These filters excluded all light wavelengths below 540 nm. The excluded wavelengths repel nesting females. Daily counts of nesting and non-nesting crawls were made. Data from the …

Teacher Attitudes Toward Supervision And Evaluation In The Developmental Research Schools Of The State Of Florida, Donna Londeree Mccaffrey Jan 2000

Teacher Attitudes Toward Supervision And Evaluation In The Developmental Research Schools Of The State Of Florida, Donna Londeree Mccaffrey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The developmental research schools, or laboratory schools, of the state of Florida became single-school public school districts in 1991. This allowed the four Florida laboratory schools to receive full-time equivalency funding from the state, but also required the schools to have state-mandated programs in place. Laboratory school teachers have varying roles that include teacher, researcher, writer, and presenter. These roles have caused discussion about appropriate performance appraisal methods for laboratory school teachers. In Florida, public school districts must have a human resources and management development plan that addresses evaluation and supervision of teaching personnel. With the passage of the Florida …

Wallace Stevens: Tale Teller Of The Soul, Denise Marie Frusciante Jan 2000

Wallace Stevens: Tale Teller Of The Soul, Denise Marie Frusciante

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In his work Re-Visioning Psychology, Jungian depth psychologist James Hillman defines the soul as "a perspective rather than a substance, a viewpoint toward things rather than a thing itself"(xvi). This definition helps to show the existence of a nontraditional, but not anti-Christian, soul in the works of Wallace Stevens. From the swirling chaos of "The Pleasures of Merely Circulating" to the underworld liminal irreality displayed in "Yellow Afternoon," we find psyche flourishing in the poetry of Stevens. She dwells in an underworld existence surrounded by archetypal Gods, such as Hermes, Hades, Dionysus, Priapus, and Zeus. While Stevens does not use …

The Lived Experience Of Caring And The Nurse Executive: A Phenomenological Study, Colleen Marie Quinn Jan 2000

The Lived Experience Of Caring And The Nurse Executive: A Phenomenological Study, Colleen Marie Quinn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The purpose of this phenomenological-hermeneutic study was to increase understanding of the caring experiences of the contemporary nurse executive practicing in four different types of health care systems. Nurse executives were asked to address the meaning of caring to them as a nurse executive. Five descriptive themes emerged from the participants: seeing things from a global perspective, advocating for the patient, providing an environment supportive of professional patient care, participating in the integration of services, and promoting a shared governance with the staff nurse or front line provider. An overall Interrelational Model of Health Care Delivery, derived from complexity science …

Theory Of Political Analysis Utilizing Power-Based Matrices, John R. Batey Jan 2000

Theory Of Political Analysis Utilizing Power-Based Matrices, John R. Batey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The existing literature regarding political power, hegemony, and mass-elite relationships could benefit from the utilization of a common theoretical framework. Such an approach calls for the synthesis of extant theories of political power into a theoretical structure that is easily translatable across various systemic contexts. Most political structures are to an extent power-based and hierarchical. The analysis of these power-laden structures is an important component of both political theory and political action. This thesis uses three cases studies to illustrate that these structures are commonplace and to explain certain aspects of their creation and destruction. The chief goal is to …

Visualization Of Search Engine Query Result Using Region-Based Document Model On Xml Documents, Sunish Umesh Parikh Jan 2000

Visualization Of Search Engine Query Result Using Region-Based Document Model On Xml Documents, Sunish Umesh Parikh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Information access systems have traditionally focused on retrieval of documents consisting of titles and abstracts. The underlying assumptions of such systems are not necessarily appropriate for full text, structured documents. Context and structure should play an important role in information access from full text document collections. When a system retrieves a document in response to a query, it is important to indicate not only how strong the match is (e.g., how many terms from the query are present in the document), but also how frequent each term is, how each term is distributed in the text and where the terms …

X-Ray And Neutron Powder Diffraction Studies Of A Biocompatible Apatite, Nearchos I. Papanearchou Jan 2000

X-Ray And Neutron Powder Diffraction Studies Of A Biocompatible Apatite, Nearchos I. Papanearchou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The problem of the carbonate substitution in bioapatites is studied via x-ray and neutron powder diffraction. A series of samples of low temperature carbonate hydroxyapatites with varying carbonate content was synthesized. The carbonate solubility in the hydroxyapatite system was studied with x-ray diffraction. The detailed crystal structure parameters of the synthetic carbonate hydroxyapatites were studied as a function of temperature and carbonate content from the analysis of Rietveld refinements of neutron powder diffraction data. The phosphate tetrahedron is distorted by the carbonate substitution. The tetrahedral bond lengths P-O1 and P-O2 decrease by 2--3%. The atomic displacement parameters (ADPs) of the …

Bulletin 4446 - Ord Land And Water Management Plan 2000, Agriculture Western Australia, Community Of Kununurra

Bulletins 4000 -

The wise use of the land and water of the Ord has become an imperative driven by increasing awareness of the impacts of current uses on ground water and the on the quality of the Ord River itself.

We have been lucky as a community that these resources are still in reasonable order and that we have the time to address the resource management challenges associated with our use of them. There is a wide range of land and water management issues to be addressed and all those involved have responsibilities to address some of those issues.

Examples Of Deterministic And Monte Carlo Algorithms For Cryptographic Applications, Joe Cullen Mcpherson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In this thesis two different types of computer algorithms, Deterministic and Monte Carlo, are illustrated. Implementations of the Berlekamp-Massey algorithm and the Parallelized Pollard Rho Search are described here. The questions of what these two algorithms provide to the field of cryptography and why they have proven themselves important to cryptography are briefly discussed. It is also shown that with a little extra knowledge, the Parallelized Pollard Rho Search may be easily modified to improve its performance.

Event Tourism And The Product Life Cycle: The Brimfield, Massachusetts Antiques And Collectibles Show, Faith Judith Wong Jan 2000

Event Tourism And The Product Life Cycle: The Brimfield, Massachusetts Antiques And Collectibles Show, Faith Judith Wong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Because every region, destination, site, of event is unique, it has been difficult to apply any one specific rule or model to enhance tourism planning. In manufacturing, and other economic areas, the product life cycle concept has been a proven method used in tracing the evolution of a product of industry through its various stages of life. In the past, most tourism models were used specifically to measure economic development, employment, foreign exchange, and tax revenues, but not the life cycle of the destination or site itself In recent years however, a form of the product life cycle model has …

Enforcing Budgetary And Legal Compliance In The Government Sector: An Assessment Of Preauditing In The State Of Kuwait, Yousef Mohammad Almutairi Jan 2000

Enforcing Budgetary And Legal Compliance In The Government Sector: An Assessment Of Preauditing In The State Of Kuwait, Yousef Mohammad Almutairi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Auditing has become both a vital activity that validates correct operations of an accounting system and is an important tool to measure financial and public accountability. Preauditing implementation in Kuwait since 1994 has been designed to ensure and improve compliance with budgetary laws and regulations by governmental units before budget execution. The purpose of this study is to examine whether compliance has been improved in those governmental units that apply preauditing and to determine the factors that affect compliance with budgetary laws and regulations. The research framework is based on a literature review of governmental auditing, enforcement research, and the …

Frequency-Dependent Characteristics Of Microstrip Transmission Lines, Settapong. Malisuwan Jan 2000

Frequency-Dependent Characteristics Of Microstrip Transmission Lines, Settapong. Malisuwan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This dissertation is concerned with the studies on the frequency-dependent characteristics of microstrip line structures. Relevant considerations are applied to evaluate crosstalk in symmetric, coupled and lossy (dispersive) microstrip transmission lines. The technique adopted supplements the wide-range of semi-empirical expressions available in the literature on the frequency-dependent even- and odd-mode effective dielectric constants as well as the characteristic impedances of coupled microstrip lines. The accuracy of a crosstalk transfer function deduced is verified with theoretical and experimental results. The behavior of crosstalk versus line-spacing, dielectric substrate characteristics, and line-length is analyzed. This study is also extended to address the influence …

Feasibility Study On Using Lonworks Power Line Transceivers For Underwater Communications, Jennifer Cairns Powell Jan 2000

Feasibility Study On Using Lonworks Power Line Transceivers For Underwater Communications, Jennifer Cairns Powell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This project consisted of a feasibility study to ascertain whether or not an inexpensive acoustic modem for an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) could be developed using low cost commercially available products. Our AUV's at Florida Atlantic University currently use LonWorks for their internal control networks, so we have plenty of experience with their parts. The LonWorks Power Line Transceivers are capable of generating a signal that can be sent to a transducer for communication through the water. The PLT-30 Power Line Transceiver generates a direct sequence spread spectrum signal (DSSS) that offers many useful operating features; such as anti-jam, interference …

Feasting With Banquo: The Ghost Stories Of Fritz Leiber, Gerald M. Adair Jan 2000

Feasting With Banquo: The Ghost Stories Of Fritz Leiber, Gerald M. Adair

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In "Smoke Ghost" (1941), Fritz Leiber created the contemporary paradigm for the "urban horror story" that has been so successfully exploited by Stephen King, Richard Matheson, Dennis Etchison, Ramsey Campbell and many others. At the heart of Leiber's ghost stories, however, rest a firm "tradition" of supernatural fiction, stemming from primitive religion, on the one hand, and literary example on the other. While his urban settings (Chicago, San Francisco) may be seen as contemporary reinterpretations of Horace Walpole's Gothic castle, his specters are the lineal descendants of Shakespeare's, LeFanu's, and Henry James's. Leiber's later use of Jungian archetypes (Shadow and …

Flame In The Grate: The Kullus Character In A Selection Of Harold Pinter's Early Works, Brian Charles Nudelman Jan 2000

Flame In The Grate: The Kullus Character In A Selection Of Harold Pinter's Early Works, Brian Charles Nudelman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Between the years 1949 and 1955, Harold Pinter was writing not plays, but poems and prose. Three works written during this period are "Kullus," "The Task," and "The Examination." Not only do these works follow chronologically, but also the intricate relationship between the narrator and Kullus established within each seems to continually refer back to a previous work. When read together, with "The Task" central, the three works form a continuing narrative of conflict and personal struggle, and for each to be fully appreciated and understood, one needs that knowledge gained from seeing the progression in relationship that is developed …

Financial Market Integration And Cross-Border Spillover Effects In Europe, Jorg. Bley Jan 2000

Financial Market Integration And Cross-Border Spillover Effects In Europe, Jorg. Bley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The ongoing political, legal, and economic harmonization within the European Union has lead to a higher degree of integration of national financial markets. The introduction of the single European currency, the euro, eliminated a traditional source of risk to international portfolio investors. In light of these developments, Part I of the empirical analysis had the following objectives: (1) to determine the relative importance of country, sector, and industry factors in explaining individual company's stock return behavior in the wake of the formation of the European Union, (2) to identify the multiple factor model, consisting of country and/or sector and/or industry …

From Policy To Practice To Management: A Restorative Justice Framework, Sandra Pavelka O'Brien Jan 2000

From Policy To Practice To Management: A Restorative Justice Framework, Sandra Pavelka O'Brien

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Two distinct models have guided the juvenile justice system during the past century---individual treatment/rehabilitation and retributive justice. While its historical orientation has been individual treatment, in recent years it has become predominately punitive (Bazemore and Day, 1998; Bazemore, 1993). The organizational mission and goals of the juvenile justice system have become internally inconsistent as it tries to satisfy competing goals, such as punishment, treatment, and protection of public safety. Currently, justice professionals have sought to clarify the aims of juvenile justice management and policy. Several possibilities exist for the future of the juvenile justice system. One proposal for the future …

Group-Level Consequences Of Communication About Physical Appearance, Donna Jill Schwartz Jan 2000

Group-Level Consequences Of Communication About Physical Appearance, Donna Jill Schwartz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Recent research has looked at sociocultural standards and social comparison to explain body image disturbances (Thompson, 1996). This study uses Latane's Dynamic Social Impact Theory to explore the emergence of group level consequences of discussing these societal standards of physical appearance. It was hypothesized that there would be more clustering, consolidation, correlation and continued diversity amongst the participants opinions by the end of the five week discussion. These hypotheses were not supported by measures of clustering, consolidation, correlation and continued diversity. These results indicate that Dynamic Social Impact Theory alone may not be useful for studying the consequence of group …

Fuzzy Auto-Detection Of Bottom Mines, Eric John Bauer Jan 2000

Fuzzy Auto-Detection Of Bottom Mines, Eric John Bauer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

An automatic mine detection method has been designed for the purpose of locating mine-like objects on the seabed in real time using a high frequency, high resolution side scan sonar. The processing flow includes a calculation of the average scattering function of the local environment, shadow detection, and a fuzzy logic clustering/fuzzy logic detection procedure for identifying mine-like shadows. An Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) equipped with a fuzzy detection system gives the Navy the capability of rapidly locating bottom mines in littoral underwater environments during over-the-horizon operations.

Sex & Surveillance: Gender, Privacy & The Sexualization Of Power In Prison, Teresa A. Miller Jan 2000

Sex & Surveillance: Gender, Privacy & The Sexualization Of Power In Prison, Teresa A. Miller

Journal Articles

In prison, surveillance is power and power is sexualized. Sex and surveillance, therefore, are profoundly linked. Whereas numerous penal scholars from Bentham to Foucault have theorized the force inherent in the visual monitoring of prisoners, the sexualization of power and the relationship between sex and surveillance is more academically obscure. This article criticizes the failure of federal courts to consider the strong and complex relationship between sex and surveillance in analyzing the constitutionality of prison searches, specifically, cross-gender searches.

The analysis proceeds in four parts. Part One introduces the issues posed by sex and surveillance. Part Two describes the sexually …
