Tertullian And The Catechumenate: An Inquiry Into Tertullian's Justification For The North African Catechumenate In The Early Third Century, Loren Kerns
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
We live in a world entirely different from that of the early Fathers. This immediately confronts the reader who encounters them for the first time. Their unfamiliar world may both annoy and intrigue the modem student. The culture in which these men and women lived has long since passed away. The Church that they knew and were devoted to has weathered trials that they could have neither foreseen nor imagined. Indeed, the modem reader does not even share their basic presuppositions about the nature of reality. So much is different, yet they experienced an integrity and wholeness virtually unknown today. …

Christianity In Latvia In The Twentieth Century, Liva Fokrote
Christianity In Latvia In The Twentieth Century, Liva Fokrote
Seminary Masters Theses
This paper is about Christianity in Latvia in the twentieth century. The country of Latvia is located on the southeastern shore of the Baltic Sea in Northeastern Europe. Christianity was brought to this country at the end of the twelfth century. Only in the twentieth century did the Christian Church in Latvia become truly indigenous and diverse.
The Church history in Latvia began with the crusading attempts of German bishops and religious orders that brought Roman Catholicism to Latvia at the end of the twelfth century. The Catholic bishops and religious orders dominated both the ecclesiastical and political life in …

A Strategy For Effectiveness In Preaching Old Testament Narrative Scripture, C. Timothy Clark
A Strategy For Effectiveness In Preaching Old Testament Narrative Scripture, C. Timothy Clark
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Old Testament preaching appears to be on the decline. Very often when it is preached, it is done poorly. Since narratives comprise 40% of the Old Testament, a large portion of God's Word is being either neglected or abused by many modern preachers. The purpose of this project is to show how proven hermeneutical and homiletical skills may be combined to provide a strategy for effectively preaching Old Testament narratives. The project will present a series of sermons based on the Old Testament book of Ruth which will demonstrate the author's strategy as it is fleshed out in practical exposition.
The Attitudes Of Liberty Leadership Toward The Modern Day Gift Of Apostle, Lee Patrick Vukich
The Attitudes Of Liberty Leadership Toward The Modern Day Gift Of Apostle, Lee Patrick Vukich
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This project is an attempt to present the entire "Scripture-only" view as it pertains to the issue of modern day apostle. This will be accomplished by one presenting proponents' views with regard to this topic. Secondly, a doctrinal study of the term apostle will be utilized as it pertains to the New Testament usage. Additionally, church history will be discussed looking at views of the church fathers with regard to this topic. Third, interviews with the leadership of Liberty University will be conducted and conclusions drawn based upon their responses.
