Ovipositional Behavior Of The 12-Spotted Lady Beetle, Coleomegilla Maculata: Choices Among Plant Species And Potential Factors Influencing Those Choices, Marisa Lynn Griffin

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Coleomegilla maculata is a beneficial coccinellid commonly found in sweet cornfields in Kentucky. Previous work on C. maculata has shown an ovipositional preferencefor the weed Acalypha ostryaefolia, compared to three selected weed species and corn. Also, predation of C. maculata egg clusters on A. ostryaefolia was less compared toclusters on corn and the presence of A. ostryaefolia led to higher densities of C. maculata larvae on corn.

I determined C. maculata ovipositional preference among weed species in fieldtests using nine common weeds. I also examined ovipositional preference using just A.ostryaefolia and Abutilon theophrasti. I assessed the roles of …

Masculinity And Femininity: Origins And Implications (Chapter Two Of Growing Strong Daughters), Lisa Graham Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Department of Sociology

Excerpt: "God could have made one sex, but he chose to create two distinct image-bearing creatures. Articulating conclusions about how women and men bear God's image differently is difficult, perhaps because we believe we must first figure out which differences to attribute to environment and which are knitted into our beings at conception."

Ideaconsciousness Networks, Wendy Angel

SWITCH

In this article, the author utilizes a theoretical approach to discuss the complexity of digital networks and the necessary cognitive adaptations humans need to process the amount of information shared over them. Several propositions are discussed including fuzziness, conscious Ideation, knowledge networks, idea structures, and idea coercion. It is theorized that ideas make up our consciousness and provide a more open definition to the experiences that combine the cognitive process. However, the fuzziness of uncertainty also raises ideas of its essential factor in our conscious exploration and that fuzziness of knowledge does not make knowledge obsolete. This posits that there …

The Musicking Machine, Jody Berland Jan 2000

The Musicking Machine, Jody Berland

SWITCH

In this article, Jody Berland coins the term and defines the concept of modern music production obsolescing classically-trained musicians as the "Music(king) Machine." To support her claims, Berland refers to media theory scholar and philosopher, Marshall McLuhan, his son Eric, and their four laws that explore how one medium obsolesces another. Because these laws, posed as questions, are applicable to all artistic mediums, Berland utilizes this guide to expand upon the "Music(king) Machine". She breaks down that collaborators, audience, performance, ears, instruments, and skills are elements that are not necessarily needed in today’s music, unlike in the prior music production …

An Investigation Of Lower Secondary Pupils' Images Of Mathematics And Mathematicians, Susan Helen Picker Jan 2000

An Investigation Of Lower Secondary Pupils' Images Of Mathematics And Mathematicians, Susan Helen Picker

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses

This thesis reports on a three-part research project in which the images of mathematics and mathematicians held by lower secondary pupils were investigated. A survey tool which asked pupils to draw a picture of a mathematician at work, and which included a Likert-type scale and open-ended writing prompts, was designed and developed for use in an international study of pupils in five countries (n = 476). The results indicate that while some pupils hold stereotypical images in common, all pupils appear to know very little about mathematicians and the work they do. Mathematicians' invisibility to pupils of this age appears …

Microfaunal Investigation Of The Early Toarcian (Lower Jurassic) Extinction Event In N.W. Europe, Mark Donald Hylton

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The Early Jurassic was a time of rapidly rising sea-level associated with the extensive spread of anoxic bottom waters. Sea-level rise across the Pliensbachian - Toarcian boundary culminated in the falciferum Zone of the Toarcian and is one of the best authenticated eustatic events in the Jurassic. This major transgressive pulse was marked by deepw ater marine sequencesa nd was associatedw ith the deposition of organic-rich shales. The development of anoxia coincides with a notable period of mass extinction of the marine fauna. High resolution sampling and study of the microfaunast hrough sequencesin N. W.
