Eve A Priest In Eden?, P. Gerard Damsteegt Jan 2000

Eve A Priest In Eden?, P. Gerard Damsteegt

Faculty Publications

This chapter evaluates the hypothesis that Eve was a priest in Eden before sin had entered into the world which implies that opponents of women ordination cannot use the argument that there were no female priests in the Old Testament.

Salmon On The Brink: The Imperative Of Integrating Environmental Standards And Review On An Ecosystem Scale, Dianne K. Conway, Daniel S. Evans Jan 2000

Salmon On The Brink: The Imperative Of Integrating Environmental Standards And Review On An Ecosystem Scale, Dianne K. Conway, Daniel S. Evans

Seattle University Law Review

This Article examines the interplay between the Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act, the necessity of applying these statutes under an ecosystem or watershed based model, and the need to coordinate and integrate standards and review processes under the acts. The concept of watershed management is summarized in Part II, and Part III gives a brief overview of the two statutes and their implementation. Part IV focuses on the opportunities for, and necessity of, streamlining and integrating the standards and review under the two statutes to support the integrated, place-based, management model envisioned by a watershed approach. We conclude …

A Trust For All The People: Rethinking The Management Of Washington's State Forests, Daniel Jack Chasan Jan 2000

A Trust For All The People: Rethinking The Management Of Washington's State Forests, Daniel Jack Chasan

Seattle University Law Review

In this Article, I will first point out that neither the federal Enabling Act nor the Washington Constitution explicitly requires the state to hold its granted lands in trust for the common schools or other named institutions. Next, I will argue that even if the granted lands are trusts, they are not common law trusts and therefore should not be managed under common law trust principles. Third, I will demonstrate that neither Congress nor the framers of the Washington Constitution expected the lands to generate maximum revenue. Fourth, I will show that preventing thefts and giveaways of public land and …

The Ethics Of Advocacy For The Mentally Ill: Philosophic And Ethnographic Considerations, Bruce A. Arrigo, Christopher R. Williams Jan 2000

The Ethics Of Advocacy For The Mentally Ill: Philosophic And Ethnographic Considerations, Bruce A. Arrigo, Christopher R. Williams

Seattle University Law Review

In this Article, we critically address several philosophical underpinnings of ethical decision-making that impact persons with psychiatric disorders. We focus our attention, however, upon an admittedly limited target area. Thus, we canvass a select number of significant issues that pose unique problems for humanity. The purpose of these excursions is that of reflection. In brief, we will speculatively examine: (1) the relationship between human rights and the law; (2) the relationship between mental illness and the law (i.e. the rights of the mentally ill); (3) the ethics of involuntary confinement (i.e., taking away and giving back rights to the mentally …

Therapeutic Jurisprudence In The Appellate Arena: Judicial Notice And The Potential Of The Legislative Fact Remand, A.J. Stephani Jan 2000

Therapeutic Jurisprudence In The Appellate Arena: Judicial Notice And The Potential Of The Legislative Fact Remand, A.J. Stephani

Seattle University Law Review

This Article begins with a modest objective and ends with an ambitious one. First, it asserts that appellate courts are an appropriate forum for considering the therapeutic impact of the law strand of therapeutic jurisprudence (TJ) scholarship. TJ's character as a "field of social inquiry" is especially suited to the appellate courts' task of formulating new rules of law and choosing among competing policy objectives when resolving opposing normative principles.

The Cognitive-Initiative Account Of Depression-Related Impairments In Memory, Paula T. Hertel Jan 2000

The Cognitive-Initiative Account Of Depression-Related Impairments In Memory, Paula T. Hertel

Psychology Faculty Research

The many and diverse interpretations of the word control make it clear that control constitutes a fundamental concern in most areas of psychology. In an illustration of this diversity, I described my interest in controlled uses of memory at a social gathering; my new acquaintances, without realizing the non sequitur, subsequently raised issues about self control and loss of control-issues much more relevant to their own interests in psychological phenomena than are my narrow musings. Yet a second thought devoted to the semantics of control reveals underlying commonalities. For example, when older people begin to have problems with controlled …

Some New Observations On The Cytopathology Of Fin Erosion Disease In Winter Flounder Pseudopleuronectes Americanus, Joel E. Bodammer

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

A light and electron microscopic study was conducted on dorsal fin tissues adjacent to acute fin erosion lesions in winter flounder from 2 polluted sites (New York Bight region and New Haven Harbor) on the northeast Atlantic Coast. The objective of this work was to evaluate these minimally affected, lesion-associated tissues which may precede the acute or severe stages of the disease. The following 4 types of pathological conditions were found in the epidermis of diseased fish from the 2 polluted sites: (1) epithelial cell hyperplasia; (2) mucous cell hyperplasia and hypertrophy; (3) spongiosis; and (4) focal necrosis. The latter …

Adieu To Electrocution, Deborah W. Denno Jan 2000

Adieu To Electrocution, Deborah W. Denno

Faculty Scholarship

This Article contends that there is no moral or legal reason to retain electrocution, particularly because other execution methods are available. It is clear that at some point soon, electrocution will no longer exist in this country and, as a result, throughout the world. By eliminating this perplexing vestige, the other problems with the death penalty may appear all that more offensive.

Rpos Gene Function Is A Disadvantage For Escherichia Coli Bj4 During Competitive Colonization Of The Mouse Large Intestine, Karen A. Krogfelt, Marianne Hjulgaard, Kristine Sørensen, Paul S. Cohen, Michael Givskov Jan 2000

Rpos Gene Function Is A Disadvantage For Escherichia Coli Bj4 During Competitive Colonization Of The Mouse Large Intestine, Karen A. Krogfelt, Marianne Hjulgaard, Kristine Sørensen, Paul S. Cohen, Michael Givskov

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

The ability of Escherichia coli to survive stress during growth in different environments is, in large part, dependent onrpoS and the genes that comprise the rpoSregulon. E. coli BJ4 and an isogenic BJ4 rpoSmutant were used to examine the influence of the rpoS gene on E. coli colonization of the streptomycin-treated mouse large intestine. Colonization experiments in which the wild-typeE. coli BJ4 and its rpoS mutant were fed individually as well as simultaneously to mice suggested that E. coli BJ4 does not face prolonged periods of nutrient starvation in the mouse large intestine and that the …

Three-Dimensional Kinematics And Wake Structure Of The Pectoral Fins During Locomotion In Leopard Sharks Triakis Semifasciata, C. D. Wilga, George V. Lauder Jan 2000

Three-Dimensional Kinematics And Wake Structure Of The Pectoral Fins During Locomotion In Leopard Sharks Triakis Semifasciata, C. D. Wilga, George V. Lauder

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The classical theory of locomotion in sharks proposes that shark pectoral fins are oriented to generate lift forces that balance the moment produced by the oscillating heterocercal tail. Accordingly, previous studies of shark locomotion have used fixed-wing aircraft as a model assuming that sharks have similar stability and control mechanisms. However, unlike airplanes, sharks are propelled by undulations of the body and tail and have considerable control of pectoral fin motion. In this paper, we use a new approach to examine the function of the pectoral fins of leopard sharks, Triakis semifasciata, during steady horizontal swimming at speeds of …
