Communicating The Risks And Hazards Of Methylmercury To The Ojibwe Population, Glenna Lee

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Fatal poisonings due to the consumption of fish containing high concentrations of methylmercury have been well documented, and demonstrate that the consumption of mercury-contaminated fish and other organisms can contribute to adverse human health effects. Native Americans of the Great Lakes region are one of the populations potentially subjected to greater concentrations of methylmercury than the general population because fishery is an integral part of their culture. The purpose of this study is to investigate the Ojibwe of the Great Lakes region's understanding of the risks and hazards associated with the consumption of fish contaminated with methylmercury and increase their …

United States Population Policies And Environmental Ethics: Addressing Population Growth From The Biocentric Perspective, Philip Davis Macwilliams Jan 2000

United States Population Policies And Environmental Ethics: Addressing Population Growth From The Biocentric Perspective, Philip Davis Macwilliams

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

When the environmental movement began to surge in the 1960s, concerns were raised over the prospects of the U.S. population growing to an unsustainable level and causing irreparable harm to the environment and our quality of life. Unfortunately, population growth has not been given the priority it deserves not because it is not an important issue, but because of our failure to view population growth, and all environmental issues, from a biocentric outlook. It is this paradigm shift towards biocentrism that we as moral agents should be making and which will subsequently cause us to view population growth in a …

Hamlet: Red, An Adaptation, Noelle Christine Youngblood Jan 2000

Hamlet: Red, An Adaptation, Noelle Christine Youngblood

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Hamlet: Red, an adaptation proposes an in-depth method of teaching Shakespeare's works by reconstructing the literature so it is relative to the cultural context of its students. This proposal focuses specifically on Hamlet as studied by at-risk middle schoolers. Beginning with a vital teacher-student rapport, the process continues through selection of a text based upon the dynamics of the students, analysis and rewriting of that text based upon its themes that relate to the students, and final production of the completed adaptation; Complexities arise when teachers, concerned with positively influencing each of their students, are faced with tremendous diversity in …

Modeling The Diffusion Of Reactive And Nonreactive Solutes In Cores From The Cannikin Test Site, Amchitka Island, Alaska, Nicole Ann Brown

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The migration and distribution of contaminants in the subsurface environment are controlled by groundwater movement and the extent of interaction between the contaminants and surrounding rock matrix. Studies have shown that diffusion through the rock matrix may serve as a prominent contaminant retardation mechanism in crystalline igneous rocks; The diffusion of reactive and nonreactive solutes through basalt and breccia cores from the Cannikin Test Site, Amchitka Island, Alaska has been studied. Lead (Pb(II)) and cesium (Cs(I)) were chosen as reactive solutes and bromide (Br-) was chosen as the nonreactive solute. Because retardation due to sorption is expected to affect the …

A Study Of The Effect Of Computer/Internet Usage On Slot/Video Machine Players' Gambling Behaviors, Howook (Sean) Chang

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Age of Information has changed the way we live since personal computers outsold TV sets, and the number of emails exceeded the number of regular stamped letters. For the last decade, the Las Vegas gaming market has changed toward not only the lavish gambling field that houses computerized slot/video machines and high speed Internet ready hotel rooms, but also a family entertainment resort and a major convention destination. These facts raised the question of how many computer/Internet literate gamblers are in Las Vegas, and whether it would influence on their slot/video machine gambling behaviors. This study found that 70% …

The Geology And Geochemistry Of Volcanic Rocks In The Lava Mountains, California: Implications For Miocene Development Of The Garlock Fault, Deborah L Keenan Jan 2000

The Geology And Geochemistry Of Volcanic Rocks In The Lava Mountains, California: Implications For Miocene Development Of The Garlock Fault, Deborah L Keenan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Lava Mountains are located in the Mojave Desert, southern California along the Garlock Fault, a major continental strike-slip fault that separates the southwestern Basin and Range to the north from the Mojave block to the south. Chemical similar dacitic lava and pyroclastic flows erupted from the 9-km diameter Western Lava Mountains volcano. Dacites with limited chemical variability reflect interaction of mantle derived basalt with both metabasalt and graywacke of the Mesozoic Rand Schist and Cretaceous "Atolia-type" granitoids. Geophysical data suggests a low angle contact between these lithologies at a depth of about 20 km. This boundary may have served …

The Removal Of Perchlorate From Waters By A Membrane-Immobilized Biofilm, Jian Liu Jan 2000

The Removal Of Perchlorate From Waters By A Membrane-Immobilized Biofilm, Jian Liu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis investigated the feasibility of using a membrane-immobilized biofilm reactor to remove perchlorate from waters. Perchlorate (ClO4 -) is easily reduced under anaerobic conditions to harmless chloride (Cl-). In this system, the perchlorate-contaminated water is physically separated from the biofilm by the membrane. Perchlorate diffuses, without the need of external energy, to the degrading biofilm, thereby minimizing the contamination of the product water by microbes. A mixed microbial culture capable biologically of reducing perchlorate was enriched and attached to the membrane surface. The results demonstrated the feasibility of using a membrane-immobilized biofilm reactor to remove perchlorate from waters. In …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Plausibility of unlikely events was investigated using a pre-test and post-test of the Life Events Inventory (Garry, et al, 1996). Students (N = 55) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas completed two sessions, including a plausibility scenario phase in which they were asked to describe four events chosen by the researcher from the pre-test on the basis of reported plausibility. Two of the events were rated low in plausibility and two were rated high in plausibility. Results indicate that plausibility ratings increase more for low rated items when participants are asked to describe those items than for control items …

Determination Of Chlorine By Fluorescence Quenching, Yixin Wei Jan 2000

Determination Of Chlorine By Fluorescence Quenching, Yixin Wei

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Chlorine is used extensively in the chemical industry and for disinfection of drinking water. Many methods have been reported for the determination of chlorine species. Fluorescence quenching to determine chlorine is a promising method because of its high sensitivity and selectivity. This study focuses on development of a sulfonamide-based collection system for low levels of chlorine in air. Quantitation of chlorine is based on the quenching of the fluorescence signal observed when chlorine reacts with the fluorescent sulfonamide compound. Both a direct fluorimetric and a fluorescence-HPLC method have been established. Linear relationships are found between the fluorescence intensity or HPLC …

Physiological Effects Of Progressive Relaxation In Trained Runners During Submaximal Treadmill Exercise, Thomas James Westendorf Jan 2000

Physiological Effects Of Progressive Relaxation In Trained Runners During Submaximal Treadmill Exercise, Thomas James Westendorf

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

To determine the physiological effects of a one-week progressive relaxation protocol on exercise efficiency, five trained, male runners volunteered to participate in this study. The results of this study show that it is possible to reduce heart rate during progressive relaxation at rest, after one week of training. In addition, the results of this study indicate that although there was a significant reduction in minute ventilation during exercise, VO 2 did not change. These results suggests that there was no carry-over effect while exercising, therefore one week of progressive relaxation may not be long enough or an effective technique to …

The Integration Of Facial And Auditory Affect: An Emotional Mcgurk Effect?, Teri Jean Forrest Jan 2000

The Integration Of Facial And Auditory Affect: An Emotional Mcgurk Effect?, Teri Jean Forrest

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Research investigating human emotion processing has typically studied either auditory (vocal) or visual (facial) information in isolation. However, speech perception literature supports integration of auditory and visual phonetic information by way of the McGurk effect. This study hypothesized an emotional McGurk effect (i.e., integration of auditory and visual emotional information). To evaluate this hypothesis, emotionally incongruent auditory-visual stimuli (e.g., a joyful voice with a sad face) were developed on a sample of 120 participants. These stimuli were then presented to 30 additional participants who categorized them according to one of eight common emotions. Results indicated significant (p < .001) Condition by Emotion interaction effects, suggesting that emotional information from auditory and visual sources is integrated during the perception of auditory emotion. This integration appears to occur in a predictable manner. To understand emotion perception, future studies will need to consider the interaction of auditory and visual emotional information.

Can The Influence Of Base Rate Information Be Distinguished From The Influence Of Gender Stereotypes In The Psychiatric Diagnostic Decision Making Process?, Maureen Mccormick Jan 2000

Can The Influence Of Base Rate Information Be Distinguished From The Influence Of Gender Stereotypes In The Psychiatric Diagnostic Decision Making Process?, Maureen Mccormick

Open Access Dissertations

A correct diagnosis may be critical to the implementation of an appropriate treatment plan for a patient. Many factors contribute to the difficulty of assigning a correct psychiatric diagnosis, including misuse, or less than optimal use, of information. Many studies have documented underutilization of base rate data in prediction. Research into the use of stereotypes has demonstrated that too much reliance on an individual's membership in a group may also affect decision making. What is the appropriate use of base rate data and group membership in psychiatric diagnosis? It was hypothesized that participants would underutilize base rates in a low …

Rights Of Passage: A Cross -Cultural Study Of Maroon Novels By Black Women., Randi Gray Kristensen Jan 2000

Rights Of Passage: A Cross -Cultural Study Of Maroon Novels By Black Women., Randi Gray Kristensen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigates the use and implications of the trope of marronage, the African-American practice of self-emancipation to forge alternative New World communities, in selected novels by Black women writers of North America and the Anglophone and Francophone Caribbean. It draws on theories of liminality to posit a theory of liberatory practice that deconstructs hegemonic narratives, both personal and historical. Postmodern approaches are deferred in favor of locating these texts and their concerns as deriving from the epistemological consequences of modernity. Cross-cultural Black women's texts were chosen to illuminate the recognition of shared subjugations across national and linguistic borders, as …

Effects Of Dietary Phytase Supplementation On Growth, Nutrient Utilization, And Phytate Degradation In Channel Catfish, Ictalurus Punctatus., Weibing Yan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Phytase supplementation increases the availability of phosphorus in fish diets, and dietary protein utilization might be increased as well by lower phytate concentrations in phytase supplemented diets. Experiments were conducted to determine if weight gain; protein utilization; mineral retention; apparent dry matter, protein and mineral digestibility; and phytate degradation in the stomach of channel catfish fed an all-plant-protein diet could be improved by phytase supplementation. Seven diets were tested: a nutrient complete diet (TC) containing 5% fish meal and six all-plant-protein diets (T1--T6) that contained minimal levels of available phosphorus (0.16%; total P = 0.57%) and zinc (53.37 ppm), but …

Effects Of Cobalt-60 Gamma Irradiation On The Malaysian Prawn Macrobrachium Rosenbergii., Nyanti Lee Jan 2000

Effects Of Cobalt-60 Gamma Irradiation On The Malaysian Prawn Macrobrachium Rosenbergii., Nyanti Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A major obstacle in culture of the Malaysian prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, is the complex social structure whereby a few large males dominate the population and reduce production. The goal of this work was to induce reproductive sterility by use of gamma radiation as a means to increase production. Of the 62 publications related to the use of gamma radiation in aquatic species published between 1938 and 1996, 66% did not indicate performance of dosimetry (dosage verification). Samples were not rotated during irradiation in 98% of these studies, which introduces considerable variation in dose. A dosimetric study in this dissertation found …
