Analysis Of Human Skin Emanations By Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry. 2. Identification Of Volatile Compounds That Are Candidate Attractants For The Yellow Fever Mosquito (Aedes Aegypti), Ulrich R. Bernier, Daniel L. Kline, Donald Barnard, Carl Schreck, Richard A. Yost

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Volatile compounds emanated from human skin were studied by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/ MS). The purpose of this study was to identify compounds that may be human-produced kairomones which are used for host location by the mosquito, Aedes aegypti (L.). The procedure used to collect volatiles was chosen because of prior knowledge that attractive substances can be transferred from skin to glass by handling. Laboratory bioassays have shown that the residuum on the glass remains attractive to mosquitoes until the compounds of importance evaporate. The sampling and analytical procedures modeled the above-cited process as closely as possible except that the …

Should The Brandenburg V. Ohio Incitement Test Apply In Media Violence Tort Cases?, Rodney A. Smolla

Law Faculty Publications

Imagine that you are a newly-installed justice of a state supreme court. An array of cases come before you in your first term posing, in a variety of contexts, questions concerning the extent to which tort liability may be imposed to compensate victims for injuries or death allegedly caused by presentation of violent material in the media. Here are the cases:

I. The manufacturers of a violent video game are sued for wrongful death by the families of victims of school children murdered in a killing spree at a high school. The plaintiffs allege that the teen-aged boy who committed …

The Secret Journal Of Sister Jess: A True Story In Honor Of Oliver W. Hill, Sr., Esq., Jonathan K. Stubbs Jan 2000

The Secret Journal Of Sister Jess: A True Story In Honor Of Oliver W. Hill, Sr., Esq., Jonathan K. Stubbs

Law Faculty Publications

Oliver Hill places his finger squarely on a modem struggle, namely, the idea that human beings can be both one and many. Many humans seem to think that it is impossible to have more than one identity. For example, suppose a black person says ''I am a human being first and my color is secondary." Some people hearing this statement would interpret it as a (foolish) repudiation of one's "racial" identity. To some the statement means that he wants to be a human being rather than a black person. That means he must be bleached of his blackness. Thus, in …

The Economics Of Residential Solid Waste Management, Thomas C. Kinnaman Jan 2000

The Economics Of Residential Solid Waste Management, Thomas C. Kinnaman

Faculty Journal Articles

This paper provides a broad overview of recent trends in solid waste and recycling, related public policy issues, and the economics literature devoted to these topics. Public attention to solid waste and recycling has increased dramatically over the past decade both in the United States and in Europe. In response, economists have developed models to help policy makers choose the efficient mix of policy levers to regulate solid waste and recycling activities. Economists have also employed different kinds of data to estimate the factors that contribute to the generation of residential solid waste and recycling and to estimate the effectiveness …

Oxygen Metabolism In Plantlbacteria Interactions: Characterization Of The Oxygen Uptake Response Of Plant Suspension Cells, C. Jacyn Baker, E. W. Orlandi, Kenneth L. Deahl Jan 2000

Oxygen Metabolism In Plantlbacteria Interactions: Characterization Of The Oxygen Uptake Response Of Plant Suspension Cells, C. Jacyn Baker, E. W. Orlandi, Kenneth L. Deahl

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

In recent years the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been studied in plant cell suspension systems treated with bacterial pathogens. However, the associated utilization of molecular oxygen has not been well characterized. Using a multi-electrode oxygen analyser, the rates of oxygen consumption by tobacco cells during bacterial interactions were monitored. Heat-killed (HK) bacteria, which initiate an immediate ROS response in plant cells, were used as an elicitor to avoid complications of oxygen consumption by viable bacteria. An increase in oxygen uptake by the tobacco cells occurred within 4 min after addition of HK-bacteria and lasted for about 10 …

Inhibition Of Cysteine And Aspartyl Proteinases In The Alfalfa Weevil Midgut With Biochemical And Plant-Derived Proteinase Inhibitors, Stephen E. Wilhite, Thomas C. Elden, Joze Brzin, Ann C. Smigocki Jan 2000

Inhibition Of Cysteine And Aspartyl Proteinases In The Alfalfa Weevil Midgut With Biochemical And Plant-Derived Proteinase Inhibitors, Stephen E. Wilhite, Thomas C. Elden, Joze Brzin, Ann C. Smigocki

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Proteolytic activities in alfalfa weevil (Hypera postica) larval midguts have been characterized. Effects of pH, thiol activators, low-molecular weight inhibitors, and proteinase inhibitors (PIs) on general substrate hydrolysis by midgut extracts were determined. Hemoglobinolytic activity was highest in the acidic to mildly acidic pH range, but was maximal at pH 3.5. Addition of thiolactivators dithiothreitol (DTT), 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME), or l-cysteine had little effect on hemoglobin hydrolysis at pH 3.5, but enhanced azocaseinolytic activity two to three-fold at pH 5.0. The broad cysteine PI E-64 reduced azocaseinolytic activity by 64% or 42% at pH 5 in the presence or …

Analysis Of An Ecotourist Based Management Strategy: Crystal Cave, Yanchep National Park, Western Australia, Charles Priddle Jan 2000

Analysis Of An Ecotourist Based Management Strategy: Crystal Cave, Yanchep National Park, Western Australia, Charles Priddle

Theses : Honours

Ecotourism has quickly become one of the most influential and prominent terms used within the tourism industry today. With its many obscure definitions ecotourism has also been used to support a great number of unsustainable tourist developments. This study examined whether ecotourism had the ability to ensure ecological and financial sustainability through increased public exposure and appreciation to an ecologically sensitive area. One place in which this notion is being put to the test is in Crystal Cave, a popular tourist destination inside Yanchep National Park, 50 kilometres north of Perth. This cave is named after the beautiful reflections off …

Jack Maggs : A Differend Convict(Ion) By Peter Carey, Timothy D. Langley Jan 2000

Jack Maggs : A Differend Convict(Ion) By Peter Carey, Timothy D. Langley

Theses : Honours

This thesis is an analysis of Peter Carey's novel Jack Maggs and its attempt at writing back to Charles Dickens' Great Expectations. I will analyse the (de)construction of language games between Jack Maggs and Great Expectations; show how Carey as a post-colonial settler writer writes back to the centre, to Dickens' text as a canonical Victorian novel, through intergrating the very notion of the Victorian novel, and in his own terms giving the convict a "history". I will explore how Carey writes competing language games of "science" and "narrative" (as identified by Lyotard) within Jack Maggs and how they produce …

The purpose of this study was to examine children’s attitudes towards Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal peers with Conduct Disorder. A 2 x 2 x 2 factorial design was used to test the hypotheses. The three independent variables were: (a) Ethnicity of the target student (aboriginal/ Non-Aboriginal) described in a vignette, (b) disability or the target student (no disability/ conduct disorder) described in a vignette; and (c) the gender of the participants. A sample of 216 Year 6 students was divided into four groups each containing 27 girls and 27 boys and an attitude questionnaire was administered. The attitude survey measured two …

Temas De Muerte E Identidad En Pasos Y Pasajero, Brian Taylor Jan 2000

Temas De Muerte E Identidad En Pasos Y Pasajero, Brian Taylor

Theses : Honours

Pasos y Pasajeros marked a transition from Uslar Pietri’s previous stories. Whilst retaining his accustomed rural geographical environment and civil war historical environment for some stories, he introduces us to urban landscapes and contemporary settings in many others. The anonymity of time and places in earlier works, gives way to defined places, periods and social environments, perhaps reflecting the evolution of Venezuela from a subsistence agrarian economy to a fledgling urban society, enabled by the exploitation of the country's oil reserves. In the works of Uslar Pietri, several themes predominate. Death and identity are two themes explored in this thesis, …

Social Risk And The Transformation Of Public Health Law: Lessons From The Plague Years, Elizabeth B. Cooper Jan 2000

Social Risk And The Transformation Of Public Health Law: Lessons From The Plague Years, Elizabeth B. Cooper

Faculty Scholarship

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) was the wake-up call that disturbed America from its mid-twentieth century slumber concerning the dangers of communicable diseases. Until AIDS was identified in 1981, most Americans felt largely impervious to health threats posed by viruses or bacteria. Polio, smallpox, and tuberculosis had been brought under control by the "magic bullets" of antibiotics and vaccines." We felt more susceptible to the ravages of cancer or the debilitation of heart disease. But, over the last twenty years, the (re)emergence of serious or life-threatening microbial- based conditions such as Ebola, hantavirus, Lyme disease, West Nile virus, and even …

Development, Characterization And Evaluation Of A Pulsed-Release Tablet Dosage Form For Low Dose Water Soluble Drugs, Suresh Palaniswamy

Open Access Dissertations

Various types of controlled release dosage forms such as wax matrix hydrophilic polymer matrix, osmotic pump and acrylic resin polymer encapsulated slow release for water soluble drugs have been developed and reported. However, there was no significant information available in the literature about the development and scale-up of pulse-release tablet dosage form for low dose water soluble drugs. This investigation was undertaken to develop, characterize and evaluate a new pulsed-release dosage form for a low dose water soluble drug with consistent drug release that combines polymer matrix and aqueous coating technology. The effect of scale-up on granulation, compression and coating …

Growth And Performance Of Broiler Chicks During The Starter And Grower Phases In Phase-Feeding, L. Niki Loupe, Jason L. Emmert Jan 2000

Growth And Performance Of Broiler Chicks During The Starter And Grower Phases In Phase-Feeding, L. Niki Loupe, Jason L. Emmert

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a nutrition program referred to as “phase-feeding” (PF) over the first 6 weeks posthatching. Diets were formulated using amino acid recommendations from the National Research Council (NRC) (1994) or from linear regression equations generated from best estimates of lysine (Lys), sulfur amino acid (SAA), and threonine (Thr) requirements. Regression equations were used to predict weekly Lys, SAA, and Thr requirements for use in a PF regimen that involved lowering amino acid levels following each respective week of the experiment, resulting in six diets fed over the 6-week period. Over the entire …

The First Bite Is Free: Employer Liability For Sexual Harassment, Joanna L. Grossman Jan 2000

The First Bite Is Free: Employer Liability For Sexual Harassment, Joanna L. Grossman

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

In June, 1998, the Supreme Court issued two decisions, Burlington Industries, Inc. v. Ellerth and Faragher v. City of Boca Raton that established new standards for employer liability for sexual harassment. Although the two cases presented different questions and factual predicates, the Court adopted a unified holding with respect to employer liability for supervisor harassment. Many commentators interpreted the new standards as a blow to employers based on the perception that employers would now be held accountable for workplace harassment without regard to their culpability.

The thesis of this article is that the conventional wisdom with respect to Faragher and …

Going Private: Technology, Due Process, And Internet Dispute Resolution, Elizabeth G. Thornburg Jan 2000

Going Private: Technology, Due Process, And Internet Dispute Resolution, Elizabeth G. Thornburg

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

Despite cliches about Internet speed, disputes that arise on and about the Internet can be time-consuming to resolve, legally murky, and factually complex. In response, Internet players with market power are opting out: mandatory arbitration is replacing both substantive law and court procedure, and technological remedies are providing self-help without any dispute resolution at all. These alternative procedures tend to move faster than courts and to cost their corporate creators less than lawsuits. They are also structured to maximize the success of the powerful. But faster is not always better. Cheap is not always fair or accurate. Market power is …

Individual Differences In Cognitive Performance Relating To Non-Pathological Sleep Parameters In The Presence Of A Stressor, Theresa Marie Lagman Jan 2000

Individual Differences In Cognitive Performance Relating To Non-Pathological Sleep Parameters In The Presence Of A Stressor, Theresa Marie Lagman

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Non-pathological sleep parameters in relation to cognition among individuals who do not qualify as having sleep disorders or who are not subjected to extended periods of total sleep deprivation have not been adequately investigated in previous studies. The current study investigates the influence of circadian typology (morning-type vs. evening-type individuals), time of session (AM vs. PM), habitual sleep practices (sleep hygiene), sleep quality, life stress, and the presence of an acute stressor on sustained attention, memory, and mental rotation performance. Several main effects emerged for individual variables above; however, the data failed to reveal significant interactions among these variables. The …

Co-brand agreements are what I do. I am the self-titled "King of CoBrands," as this is what I've been doing with my life.

So, let's talk a little about co-branding agreements and about why they might matter. First let's define our terms.

Now, where there used to be one site, the provider site, there will be two sites, the provider site and co-branded site, which contains the branding of the portal, but contains all the same functionality, or similar functionality, as is in the provider's site.

Then the portal will drive traffic to this co-branding site, for purposes that we'll …
