Stock Market Reactions To Unfavorable Product Information: A Case Study Of Comments On Beef Safety Made On An Oprah Winfrey Show, Elpida Ormanidou, Michael Thomsen Jan 2000

Stock Market Reactions To Unfavorable Product Information: A Case Study Of Comments On Beef Safety Made On An Oprah Winfrey Show, Elpida Ormanidou, Michael Thomsen

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

This study examines the impact of unfavorable media coverage on the stock market prices of major food companies, an issue of increasing importance to the food industry. The study focuses on the 16 April 1996 Oprah Winfrey Show, a popular television program that raised questions about the safety of the U.S. beef supply. The show resulted in considerable controversy, and some cattle feeders blamed the show for a drop in cattle prices. The focus of this study is on the impact of the program at other stages of the food system. We examined the stock returns of two major beef …

Reproductive Behavior Of The Emu, Reema A. Persad, Douglas James, Nicholas B. Anthony Jan 2000

Reproductive Behavior Of The Emu, Reema A. Persad, Douglas James, Nicholas B. Anthony

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Members of a flock of male and female emus were observed in an ethological experiment designed to investigate trends in reproductive behavior exhibited during the North American mating season, which lasts from October to mid-March. Observations were made at dawn, noon, and dusk from December 1999 to mid-March 2000, and the only behaviors that were consistently expressed during these times were pecking, strutting, exclusive, and male and female sexual activities (defined in text). Though statistical significance was found between male strutting behavior and female sexual activity in the December observation period, no overall significance or significance at other observation periods …

Lineage-Restricted Function Of Nuclear Factor Kappab-Inducing Kinase (Nik) In Transducing Signals Via Cd40., Norman Garceau, Yoko Kosaka, Sally Masters, John Hambor, Reiko Shinkura, Tasuko Honjo, Randolph J. Noelle Jan 2000

Lineage-Restricted Function Of Nuclear Factor Kappab-Inducing Kinase (Nik) In Transducing Signals Via Cd40., Norman Garceau, Yoko Kosaka, Sally Masters, John Hambor, Reiko Shinkura, Tasuko Honjo, Randolph J. Noelle

Dartmouth Scholarship

CD40 signaling in B cells and dendritic cells (DCs) is critical for the development of humoral and cell-mediated immunity, respectively. Nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kappaB)-inducing kinase (NIK) has been implicated as a central transducing kinase in CD40-dependent activation. Here, we show that although NIK is essential for B cell activation, it is dispensable for activation of DCs. Such data provide compelling evidence that different intermediary kinases are used by different cellular lineages to trigger NF-kappaB activation via CD40.

Foreward, Symposium: Philosophical Hermeneutics And Critical Legal Theory, Francis J. Mootz Iii

Scholarly Works

This Symposium brings the considerable talents of a diverse group of scholars to bear on a pressing problem in legal theory: Whether critical theory is possible after the hermeneutical turn. All too often, this problem is framed to invite an “either-or” response. Either we reject the hermeneutical turn and hew to a traditional account of critique anchored by an unimpeachable standard (whether economic, historical, conceptual, cognitive, or otherwise), or we take the hermeneutical turn by embracing radical historical contingency and fluidity, thereby forsaking the possibility of critique and surrendering to conservative conventionalism or inviting postmodern chaos. This Symposium challenges this …

Trajectories Of Sinking Particles And The Catchment Areas Above Sediment Traps In The Northeast Atlantic, Joanna Waniek, Wolfgang Koeve, Ralf D. Prien Jan 2000

Trajectories Of Sinking Particles And The Catchment Areas Above Sediment Traps In The Northeast Atlantic, Joanna Waniek, Wolfgang Koeve, Ralf D. Prien

Journal of Marine Research

A Lagrangian analysis of particles sinking through a velocity field observed by Eulerian frame measurements was used to evaluate the effects of horizontal advection and particle sinking speed on particle fluxes as measured by moored sediment traps. Characteristics of the statistical funnel above moored deep-ocean sediment traps at the German JGOFS quasi-time series station at 47N, 20W (Biotrans site) were determined. The analysis suggests that the distance and direction between a given sediment trap and the region at the surface where the particles were produced depends on the mean sinking velocity of the particles, the horizontal velocity field above the …

Congregational Character: From Stories To Story, Tom Steffen

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

The wide influence of television, media, and computer technology has created a story-telling culture in the United States. Dr. Tom Steffen suggests that denominational leaders and church consultants must begin using a story telling model of analysis to be effective in this new millennium. His insightful ideas are fully discussed in “Congregational Character: From Stories to Story.”

Are Iq Discrepancies Between Ses Groups Primarily The Result Of Verbal Scale Differences?, Carol Lee Macnaught Jan 2000

Are Iq Discrepancies Between Ses Groups Primarily The Result Of Verbal Scale Differences?, Carol Lee Macnaught

Open Access Dissertations

Historically, comparison groups of children from low socioeconomic status (SES) have done less well on intelligence tests than their more well-to-do counterparts. This study was undertaken to explore the contribution of verbal ability to general intelligence and to consider the possibility of developmental change in the relative contributions of the verbal and performance scales. The analyses used verbal, performance, and full scale scores of a subgroup of the standardization sample of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - Third Edition (WISC-III). The scores used were attained by children in three age groups (7, 11, and 15 years) with four levels …

Faculty Articles

This forward to a symposium issue of the law review maps the terrain of legal regulation of sexuality. It locates sexuality within a matrix of power, knowledge, and resistance and the question of regulation of sexuality is approached from the perspective of the sexually marginalized subject -- the sexual subaltern. It briefly reviews the contributions to the symposium and forwards a research agenda about questions of theory and praxis related to the production and regulation of sexual subjects.

Localism, Self-Interest, And The Tyranny Of The Favored Quarter: Addressing The Barriers To New Regionalism, Sheryll Cashin Jan 2000

Localism, Self-Interest, And The Tyranny Of The Favored Quarter: Addressing The Barriers To New Regionalism, Sheryll Cashin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article argues that our nation's ideological commitment to decentralized local governance has helped to create the phenomenon of the favored quarter. Localism, or the ideological commitment to local governance, has helped to produce fragmented metropolitan regions stratified by race and income. This fragmentation produces a collective action problem or regional prisoner's dilemma that is well-known in the local governance literature.
