Forgiveness And Mental Health: A Comparison Across Monotheistic Religions, Todd Anthony Heim Jan 2000

Forgiveness And Mental Health: A Comparison Across Monotheistic Religions, Todd Anthony Heim

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the relationship between forgiveness and mental health. Additionally, the study compared two monotheistic religions (i.e. Judaism, Christianity) with respect to the practice and conceptualization of forgiveness. Participants from the Jewish and Christian religions were recruited from several Midwestern churches and synagogues. Participants answered self-report questionnaires concerning religiousness, forgiveness, and mental health (e.g. anger, hope, depression, and spiritual well-being). Consistent with hypotheses, Forgiveness (AN) and Forgiveness (PP) were negatively correlated with state anger and positively correlated with existential well-being after controlling for the effects o f demographics and religiousness. Additionally, Forgiveness (AN) was negatively correlated with depression, and …

An Investigation Into The Impact That Witnessing Or Experiencing Childhood Violence Has On Adult Women, Jennifer Anne Hochdoerfer Jan 2000

An Investigation Into The Impact That Witnessing Or Experiencing Childhood Violence Has On Adult Women, Jennifer Anne Hochdoerfer

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This paper examined the relation between witnessing or experiencing childhood violence and its impact on adult women’s criminal and/or violent acts, and their attitudes towards violence. It was hypothesized that women who committed criminal and/or violent acts would significantly differ in witnessing or experiencing childhood violence than those who did not commit criminal and/or violent acts. Further, it was also hypothesized that attitudes towards violence would also be positively correlated with having witnessed or experienced violence as a child. Finally, it was also hypothesized that women who committed criminal and/or violent acts would have significantly different attitudes towards violence than …

Home Ranges And Habitat Selection Of White-Tailed Deer In A Suburban Nature Area In Eastern Nebraska, Scott Hygnstrom, Kurt C. Vercauteren Jan 2000

Home Ranges And Habitat Selection Of White-Tailed Deer In A Suburban Nature Area In Eastern Nebraska, Scott Hygnstrom, Kurt C. Vercauteren

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We evaluated the movements of 59 radio-collared female white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) at the Gifford Point Wildlife Management Area (GP) and Fontenelle Forest Nature Area (FF) in eastern Nebraska from 1994 to 1997. Annual home ranges averaged 276 ha (CI = 166 ha). Forty-four of the deer maintained relatively small home ranges (0=129 ha) and resided in the GP lowlands (n=14), FF lowlands (n=ll), and FF uplands-Bellevue residential area (BR) (n= 19). Deer in the latter area were frequently observed in backyards, at deer feeders, and on city streets. Seven of the deer were transients, maintaining seasonal home …

Effects Of Pcb 126 And Ammonia, Alone And In Combination, On Green Frog (Rana Clamitans) And Leopard Frog (R. Pipiens) Hatching Success, Development, And Metamorphosis, Mariana Beatriz Jofre, Michele L. Rosenshield, William H. Karasov Jan 2000

Effects Of Pcb 126 And Ammonia, Alone And In Combination, On Green Frog (Rana Clamitans) And Leopard Frog (R. Pipiens) Hatching Success, Development, And Metamorphosis, Mariana Beatriz Jofre, Michele L. Rosenshield, William H. Karasov

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The Green Bay watershed in Wisconsin is polluted with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxin, heavy metals, ammonia, and over 100 organic contaminants. In this study we exposed embryos and larvae of two ranid species commonly occurring in the Green Bay ecosystem, the green frog (Rana clamitans) and the leopard frog (R. pipiens), to PCB 126 (3,3', 4,4', 5-Pentachlorobyphenil, nominal concentrations 0-50 μg/l, two control treatments: water plus 0.08% acetone as carrier for the PCB, water alone), unionized ammonia (0-2 mg/I), and mixtures of both contaminants. Exposure to PCB 126 did not cause significant mortality of embryos before hatching. However, exposure to …

Reduction In Road Mortality In A Northern Leopard Frog Population, Madeleine H. Linck Jan 2000

Reduction In Road Mortality In A Northern Leopard Frog Population, Madeleine H. Linck

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Since spring of 1994, Hennepin Parks Natural Resources Management staff, assisted by numerous volunteers, has been working to reduce road mortality among migrating Northern Leopard Frogs (Rana pipiens) adjacent to Baker Park Reserve in Maple Plain, Hennepin County, Minnesota. A county road separates the overwintering site from breeding habitat within the park. With steadily increasing traffic over the years, this population of frogs was in serious decline. For the first two years (1994 and 1995) rescue efforts were limited to the spring collection of frogs as they migrated out of the overwintering lake coward the breeding wetlands, although the road …

Cultural Resistance To Global Governance, Joel Richard Paul Jan 2000

Cultural Resistance To Global Governance, Joel Richard Paul

Michigan Journal of International Law

This article maps out the terrain in which state actors and legal scholars make claims premised on a cultural exception to justify derogating from international legal norms. The author’s aim is to understand why some of these claimed cultural practices displace international legal norms, while other practices are dismissed as violating international legal norms. Part II will examine this discourse in relation to the rights of women and sexual minorities. This article will show that the international community generally regards gender norms as cultural and the international legal norm of gender equality usually defers to national cultural practices. Part III …

Uncoupling The Law Of Takings, Michael A. Heller, James E. Krier Jan 2000

Uncoupling The Law Of Takings, Michael A. Heller, James E. Krier

Law Quadrangle (formerly Law Quad Notes)

The following article is based on "Deterrence and Distribution in the Law of Takings," 112 Harvard Law Review 997-1025 (March 1999), © 1999 by the Harvard Law Review Association, and appears here by permission. A complete version, with citations, is available from the authors or the editor of Law Quadrangle Notes.

The law of takings couples together matters that should be treated independently. Whatever the boundaries of the the Takings Clause, we think there is much to be gained by analyzing takings in terms of the clause's underlying purposes, and by understanding that efficiency and justice are best served by …

The Alden Trilogy: Praise And Protest, Roger C. Hartley Jan 2000

The Alden Trilogy: Praise And Protest, Roger C. Hartley

Scholarly Articles

In this Article, I discuss the Alden Trilogy's interpretive process and its redistribution of political power, but do not linger on either. This Article is written in praise of the Trilogy, but praise coupled with protest. I make three essential points. First, the Trilogy deserves praise as a pragmatic masterpiece. Through it the Court shrewdly avoided a constitutional quagmire that easily could have created a federalism crisis.

Second, I argue that the Alden Trilogy is an exemplar of misdirection. Here I render reluctant praise, like that given to an opposing baseball team's dramatic double-play. Though one dislikes the outcome, one …

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of this topical gel to speed the closing of wounds and/or production of healthy granulation tissue.

To accomplish this evaluation, a chart review was done at Altru Health Systems. A list of names of patients …

Legal Protection For Horses: Care And Stewardship Or Hypocrisy And Neglect?, Lafcadio H. Darling Jan 2000

Legal Protection For Horses: Care And Stewardship Or Hypocrisy And Neglect?, Lafcadio H. Darling

Animal Law Review

Horses have a strong connection to America and Americans. They have played a pivotal role in our history, they have been a part of our work and our play, and we cherish them as companion animals. The legal system has made significant steps to protect horses in a number of ways. However, quite ironically, horse protection laws are often ineffective, unenforced, and sometimes non-existent. This article will explore America's relationship with the horse, horse protection laws-their strengths and their failures.
