The Feasibility Of Bovine Erythrocytes For The Purpose Of Cross-Species Transfusion To Human Recipients, James Johnstone Jan 2000

The Feasibility Of Bovine Erythrocytes For The Purpose Of Cross-Species Transfusion To Human Recipients, James Johnstone

Data and Test Instruments

Use of animal blood could overcome concerns of supply and disease transmission with human blood donation if immunological, microbiological and ethical barriers are overcome. Here we investigated the feasibility of using bovine red blood cells (RBC) because of possibly diminished cross-species immune reactivity and the relative ease of venous access in the cow. A group of 12 tagged Holstein cows were randomly selected from the NSAC herd for evaluation. Tests included hemagglutination, complement mediated lysis, osmotic fragility, conventional human crossmatch, an RBC absorbtion assay using ELISA, bovine blood type characterization, and human IgM and IgG (including subtypes) antibody binding. Each …

Neural Networks And Structured Knowledge: Rule Extraction And Applications, Franz J. Kurfess Jan 2000

Neural Networks And Structured Knowledge: Rule Extraction And Applications, Franz J. Kurfess

Computer Science and Software Engineering

As the second part of a special issue on "Neural Networks and Structured Knowledge," the contributions collected here concentrate on the extraction of knowledge, particularly in the form of rules, from neural networks, and on applications relying on the representation and processing of structured knowledge by neural networks. The transformation of the low-level internal representation in a neural network into higher-level knowledge or information that can be interpreted more easily by humans and integrated with symbol-oriented mechanisms is the subject of the first group of papers. The second group of papers uses specific applications as starting point, and describes approaches …

Prosecuting Violence/Reconstructing Community, Anthony V. Alfieri Jan 2000

Prosecuting Violence/Reconstructing Community, Anthony V. Alfieri

Articles

For two centuries, the private violence of American history has paraded into courts for public trial. Often dramatized by the spectacle of rape and murder, the public trials of private violence increasingly are seen to decide the fates of both the accused and the victim of crime. The fate of community, whether the community of the victim, the accused, or the public, seems at first blush untouched by such trials. Like victims and their families, however, communities struck by violence suffer profound loss. That loss is expressed in the destruction of public discourse, reason, and citizenship. This public ruin is …

Internet Sexual Predators: Protecting Children In The Global Community, Madeleine M. Plasencia Jan 2000

Internet Sexual Predators: Protecting Children In The Global Community, Madeleine M. Plasencia

Articles

The Internet, serving as the largest network of computers in the world, has provided the horizontal parallax over which all can participate in communication and transaction, education and entertainment4 It also serves a community of participants and beneficiaries whose goals are not always shared or legal. The rise of this advanced technology has led to a new "red light district."

Unlike the physical spaces available for the distribution of pornography and sexual favors for money, the Internet, with its lack of structure, has led to an unimaginable amount of pornography available for any on-line spectator.' Information necessary for consummation of …

Environmental Education In A "Reforming" Education World, Michele Archie, Bora Simmons Jan 2000

Environmental Education In A "Reforming" Education World, Michele Archie, Bora Simmons

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Environmental education is in an awkward position. Nationwide polls tell us that 96% of parents support teaching environmental education in the schools.1 When teachers are asked if environmental education is important, an overwhelming majority (97.9%) agrees. Yet few teachers consistently include environmental education in their curriculum. 2 In the 30 years since environmental education took wing, many teachers have found themselves caught between believing in the importance of environmental education and feeling pressed to find the time to "fit" it in.

Cultural Atrocity Expressed In Cultural Art, Marlie Mcgovern Jan 2000

Cultural Atrocity Expressed In Cultural Art, Marlie Mcgovern

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Some of the most horrific chapters in human history have involved an ethnic dimension, notably the centuries-long obliteration of traditional Nigerian cultures by European colonizers, the attempted destruction of European Jews in the Holocaust, and the World War ll decision to assault the Japanese with atomic bombs. The consequences of the above atrocities are not contained within temporal or cultural barriers, but hold profound and pervasive ramifications within contemporary society in its entirety. More recent conflicts in Africa, Southeast Asia and the Balkans reemphasize the horror and suffering brought about by cultural collisions. One of the most potent reactions to …

Desert Literature: The Modern Period, Peter Wild Jan 2000

Desert Literature: The Modern Period, Peter Wild

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

Today’s desert writing is so diffuse, ranging from detective novels to spiritual guides, that it would seem impossible to make much sense of this popular genre. However, if we put it in context, looking at the changing attitudes toward deserts over the sweep of the years and at the books growing out of them, what at first appears an impenetrable welter begins to make sense.

Biology Faculty Publications

Juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss [Walbaum]) on 1% daily ration were exposed to 0 (control) or 2 μg of cadmium as Cd(NO3)2·4H2O per liter added to four different calcium (Ca) concentrations: 260 (background), 470 (low), 770 (medium), or 1200 (high) μM of Ca added as Cd(NO3)2·4H2O in synthetic soft water for 30 d. Mortality was highest (;80%) in the background 1 Cd treatment. Approximately 40% mortality was observed in the low 1 Cd exposure; mortality was 10% or less for all other treatments. No growth effects were …

In Congress Electric: The Need For On-Line Parliamentary Procedure, 18 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 963 (2000), Phil Reiman

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

Building a set of rules for operating an ordered, effective online association is the first step toward building virtual communities and the first step toward a democratic "e-government." Disputes online are not rare; they are just rarely resolved. Currently, online forums are watched over by a moderator, who is charged with keeping the discussion on track, and to keeping the debate from getting personal. Almost everyone who has been in an online discussion is aware of "Netiquette", the informal rules that govern chat room conversations. Everyone is equally aware that these rules are often ignored. While the exchange of ideas …

A recent scandal erupted in the press when a painting that was offered for sale on an Internet auction site was believed to be a lost contemporary masterpiece. The seller appeared to be a married man who was cleaning junk out of his garage, including a painting that his wife would not let him hang in the house. A bidding frenzy drove the price from the opening bid of 25 cents to more than $135,000 from a buyer in the Netherlands. After the sale was finished (it was ended by EBay when they learned he bid on the painting himself …

Were Islamic Records Precursors To Accounting Books Based On The Italian Method?, Omar Abdullah Zaid Jan 2000

Were Islamic Records Precursors To Accounting Books Based On The Italian Method?, Omar Abdullah Zaid

Accounting Historians Journal

The precise origin of the accounting records and reports outlined by Pacioli in 1494 and used in the Italian Republics is presently unknown. Historical evidence preserved in Turkey and Egypt indicates that accounting records and reports developed in the early Islamic State were similar to those used in the Italian Republics as outlined by Pacioli in 1494. Furthermore, some of the records and reports used in different parts of the Islamic State are comparable to modern-day books and reports. The religious requirement of Zakat (religious levy) and the increasing responsibilities of the Islamic State were the force behind the development …
