How Do We Know There Is A Population-Environment Problem?, Peter J. Taylor
How Do We Know There Is A Population-Environment Problem?, Peter J. Taylor
Working Papers on Science in a Changing World
Five fictional friends of the author have agreed to meet and talk, hoping that he was right when he claimed that discussion crossing the usual boundaries of their fields would enrich their different inquiries and concerns. Ecolo, a natural and human ecologist, breaks the ice. He wants to marshall scientific knowledge to persuade others of the seriousness of the population problem. He is questioned by Philoso, whose philosophical bent leads her to observe the models that people use and to ask how they support the claims they make. In turn, the other three join in: Activo, an activist who is …

Bend Community Survey: Fall 1999, Deborah A. Howe, William A. Rabiega
Bend Community Survey: Fall 1999, Deborah A. Howe, William A. Rabiega
Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports
The City of Bend enters the new millennium following an unprecedented decade of development. Population was estimated at 47,635 in May of 1999. The city more than doubled its area with its 1998 annexations. Many public and private projects were built during the past decade, and many are in planning stages or under construction at this time. Given this history, it is prudent for city government to determine how well Bend’s citizens feel public services are performing, how they feel about communication with their government, and what their concerns are about Bend’s future course.

Nebraska’S Agricultural Real Estate Market Holds Steady, Bruce B. Johnson
Nebraska’S Agricultural Real Estate Market Holds Steady, Bruce B. Johnson
Cornhusker Economics
Despite the generally poor commodity prices during most of 1999, the markets for agricultural land remained relatively unchanged in terms of value levels and cash rental rates. Preliminary results from the February 1, 2000 UNL land market survey indicate a state all-land average value of $696 per acre, less than a 1 percent increase from 12 months earlier (Figure 1 and Table 1). For the state as a whole, the various classes of cropland moved slightly in both directions of year-earlier levels, with the 12-month changes being hardly more than the recent daily gyrations of the stock market. And though …
