Investigations Into Model Systems Of Neurodegeneration: Organotypic Brain Slice Culture And In Vivo Microdialysis, Kimberly Lara Clapp Apr 2000

Investigations Into Model Systems Of Neurodegeneration: Organotypic Brain Slice Culture And In Vivo Microdialysis, Kimberly Lara Clapp

Chemistry and Biochemistry

The mechanisms behind neurodegeneration in disease and injury have yet to be fully defined. Many in vitro and in vivo model systems, have been developed to investigate the mechanisms of neurotoxicity and its relation to human disease and injury. There are a few resounding connections between most types of neurological disorder; namely oxidative stress and inflammation. The glutamate receptor agonist, N-methyl-D-aspartate, can be used to imitate excitotoxicity during stroke as it overstimulates the glutamate receptor, leading to rises in intracellular calcium levels, which in turn lead to oxidative stress within the cell. Amyloid-beta protein (Abeta) a useful in many of …

The Evolution Of Higher Education In Zimbabwe, Raymund Zaranyika Maunde Apr 2000

The Evolution Of Higher Education In Zimbabwe, Raymund Zaranyika Maunde

Education

This study examines the origins and development of higher education for the indigenous peoples in southern Africa as a whole, while focusing on the evolution of higher education in Zimbabwe in particular. The study examines the role that higher education plays in a developing social, economic and political context by reviewing the relevant literature on the history of higher education in southern Africa and conducting a survey of the current status of emerging higher education institutions in Zimbabwe. The government of Zimbabwe is pursuing multiple avenues of public-private co-operation in providing higher education in response to the growing demand from …

Kids Count Alaska 2000, Norman Dinges, Claudia Lampman, Shawna Ragan

ISER Reports

Children living in small isolated places lead much different lives from those in bigger communities on the road system. Many villages still lack adequate water and sewer systems, and some still rely on honey buckets. In the past 20 years, state and federal agencies have built sanitation systems in many rural places–but it’s an enormous and ongoing job. Part of the problem is that many areas of Alaska require specially adapted systems that are very expensive to build and operate. In this data book, we look at (1) the indicators of children’s well-being the Kids Count program uses nationwide; and …

Three-Dimensional Diving Behavior Of Ringed Seals, Michael A. Simpkins Apr 2000

Three-Dimensional Diving Behavior Of Ringed Seals, Michael A. Simpkins

Marine Biology

The three-dimensional movements of 13 freely diving ringed seals were recorded during the spring of 1990, 1991, 1992, 1996, and 1997 in the Canadian Arctic near Resolute Bay, Nunavut. These data were used to investigate the diving behavior of ringed seals more fully than was possible using previous data, which only recorded the vertical movements of diving animals (time-depth data). During a third of all dives, ringed seals focused much of their effort within a reduced volume, suggesting local search behavior within patches of prey. Local search occurred during descent, ascent, and bottom phases (time spent at depth between the …

Kenai National Wildlife Refuge: Economic Importance, Alexandra Hill, Scott Goldsmith Apr 2000

Kenai National Wildlife Refuge: Economic Importance, Alexandra Hill, Scott Goldsmith

ISER Reports

The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge contributes to the borough economy primarily through tourism and seafood industries. The refuge’s lakes, mountains and forests are home to abundant animals, birds and fish. They provide sport fishing and hunting opportunities as well as a variety of non-consumptive activities such as hiking, rafting and bird watching. The refuge also contains breeding and rearing habitat for substantial salmon populations that support sport fishing both on and off the refuge as well as commercial fishing in Cook Inlet. Assessing what portion of the impact of any activity is directly attributable to the refuge is difficult. A …

Reporting Bias In Bird Strikes At John F Kennedy International Airport, New York, 1979-1998, Scott C. Barras, Richard A. Dolbeer Apr 2000

Reporting Bias In Bird Strikes At John F Kennedy International Airport, New York, 1979-1998, Scott C. Barras, Richard A. Dolbeer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Bird-aircraft strike databases have been used to identify, monitor, and manage bird strike problems in the USA nationally and at individual airports. Up to 75% of all bird strikes that occur in the USA may not be reported by pilots or airport control tower personnel. Recent studies have suggested that individual airports may improve their strike reporting rates by having personnel regularly search runways for the remains of birds struck by aircraft. We analyzed a 20-year dataset of runway searches from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFKIA) in New York to determine the degree of bias in reports of strikes …

Spanish Exploration In The North Pacific And Its Effect On Alaska Place Names, Albert Gregory Luna Apr 2000

Spanish Exploration In The North Pacific And Its Effect On Alaska Place Names, Albert Gregory Luna

Arctic and Northern Studies

Precipitated by the rapid advance of Russian fur hunters across the Aleutian Islands, the Spanish government awoke from its two hundred-year complacent slumber to define and defend its northern border. In all, seven expeditions crossed 54°40'N in the years between 1774 and 1792. Though not obvious today, these voyages left a vestigial mark on the state's topynomy along the Gulf of Alaska. From the town of Valdez to Bucareli Bay, these names are remains of a territorial rivalry in which the Spanish lost.

Refusal to publish its findings, lack of private entrepreneurs, and the inability of Spain to assess Alaska …
