Phytoremediation Of A Pyrene-Contaminated Cecil Soil With Annual Ryegrass (Lolium Multiflorum Lam.), Teddy Luc Lalande May 2000

Phytoremediation Of A Pyrene-Contaminated Cecil Soil With Annual Ryegrass (Lolium Multiflorum Lam.), Teddy Luc Lalande

All Theses

Phytoremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is inconsistent and the microbial mechanisms involved are unclear. We evaluated the effect of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and P availability on the degradation of pyrene (600mg kg-1 dry soil) in the top 7.5-cm of a Cecil sandy loam (fine, kaolinitic, thermic Typic Kanhapludults) over a 10-month experiment under field conditions in Clemson, SC. Changes associated with the soil microbial community were also evaluated. Plastic canopies were installed to prevent leaching and raindrop dispersion of pyrene. Treatment factors were pyrene, vegetation, and available P levels in a complete factorial experiment with four replications. …

The Service Sojourn: Conceptualizing The College Student Volunteer Experience, Brian C. Schmidt May 2000

The Service Sojourn: Conceptualizing The College Student Volunteer Experience, Brian C. Schmidt

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

Despite the increasing popularity of volunteerism in student activities and service-learning courses on college campuses, little is known about the experience of volunteers. This study examines the experience of 16 students from the University of Utah who t participated in community service. The qualitative investigation is based on 54 interviews regarding student descriptions of their experience. What common events occurred? How did they make sense of their experience? What, really, did they learn? Ethnographic interviews and a "naturalistic" approach were used to identify patterns and analyze the data. Grounded in reoccurring themes such as leaving familiar surroundings. the shock of …

Anthropology And The Doctrine Of Sin In The Theology Of Reinhold Niebuhr, Hiroyuki Kanamori

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Understanding the theology of Reinhold Niebuhr is a great challenge, because all components of his theology are intricately interrelated with each other. It is therefore not proper to describe only his anthropology and doctrine of sin, the primary focus of this study, without also mentioning other matters related to it.

The U.S. Push For Worldwide Patent Protection For Drugs Meets The Aids Crisis In Thailand: A Devastating Collision, Rosemary Sweeney May 2000

The U.S. Push For Worldwide Patent Protection For Drugs Meets The Aids Crisis In Thailand: A Devastating Collision, Rosemary Sweeney

Washington International Law Journal

In response to pressure from the United States, Thailand amended its Patent Act in 1992 and 1999 to provide patent protection for drugs and to limit its control on the pricing, importation, and compulsory licensing of patented drugs. These amendments and, perhaps even more importantly, the threat of U.S. trade sanctions, will probably ensure continued high prices and thus restricted access to new, patented Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome ("AIDS") drugs in Thailand. These drugs have dramatically changed the length and quality of life of patients infected with Human Immunodeficieny Virus ("HIV") in developed countries. About one million Thais are infected …

The Wto Panel Decision On Australia's Salmon Import Guidelines: Evidence That The Sps Agreement Can Effectively Protect Human Health Interests, Matthew D. Taylor May 2000

The Wto Panel Decision On Australia's Salmon Import Guidelines: Evidence That The Sps Agreement Can Effectively Protect Human Health Interests, Matthew D. Taylor

Washington International Law Journal

On July 19, 1999, Australia lifted its ban on salmon imports and announced new salmon import guidelines. The new guidelines were promulgated in response to a World Trade Organization ("WTO") Appellate Body determination that the import ban violated the Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures ("SPS Agreement"). Canada challenged Australia's new import guidelines, alleging that the new guidelines also violate the SPS Agreement. The WTO dispute settlement panel held that, with the exception of only one provision, Australia's new salmon import guidelines are based on appropriate scientific risk analyses and are now in line with comparable import …

An Examination Of Gasoline Pollutants From Two-Cycle Marine Engines Within Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Brian Carter May 2000

An Examination Of Gasoline Pollutants From Two-Cycle Marine Engines Within Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Brian Carter

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Jet skis are a very popular "toy" to have in the United States. They account for almost a third of all boat sales, and their numbers are growing rapidly. Unfortunately jet skis use two-cycle engines that pollute at unacceptable levels. Jet ski motors can emit up to 25% of its fuel right back into the water. This alarmed me and I wanted to take a deeper look into how bad jet skis pollute Las Vegas' primary water source. Lake Mead. I looked into how a two-cycle engine differs from a regular engine and I looked at the actual pollutants a …

The Innocence Commission: An Independent Review Board For Wrongful Convictions, David Horan May 2000

The Innocence Commission: An Independent Review Board For Wrongful Convictions, David Horan

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Convicting the innocent is no less a problem in the United States than in Great Britain. Yet the United States Congress has recently passed legislation making federal habeas corpus remedies for actual innocence more difficult to obtain, while at the same time the British Parliament passed legislation establishing the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC), an independent body to investigate suspected miscarriages of justice in Great Britain. The problem of convicting the innocent is especially notable in Illinois, which has now exonerated and released more death row inmates (thirteen) than it has executed since 1977 (twelve). As a result, state political …

Business Is War: An Investigation Into Metaphor Use In Internet And Non-Internet Ipos, Michael W. Grieves May 2000

Business Is War: An Investigation Into Metaphor Use In Internet And Non-Internet Ipos, Michael W. Grieves

Student Scholarship

This study presents the results of an investigation into the use of metaphorical language in the summary and business description sections of Intial Public Offerings (IPO) prospectuses of both Internet and non-Internet companies. This research examined fifteen Internet companies and nine non-Internet companies, which were chosen at random, that completed IPOs between January 1, 1999 and August 6, 1999 for metaphorical use that was either common to both sets of companies or specific to the Internet companies. The research attempted to demonstrate that there is strong evidence for the theory that descriptive language used in the IPO prospectuses is metaphorical …

Young Emigrants On The Oregon, California, And Mormon Trails, 1841-1866, Molly Kizer May 2000

Young Emigrants On The Oregon, California, And Mormon Trails, 1841-1866, Molly Kizer

Student Work

Between 1841 and 1866, the years of heaviest traffic on the overland trails, approximately 500,000 people uprooted their families, departed their homes in the East and began the search for a new life in Oregon, California or Utah. During these three decades, eager pioneers pushed their way across half a continent and participated in one of the greatest of modem pilgrimages. The westward movement has been studied from the viewpoints of men, and, especially in recent years, from the viewpoints of women, but few historians have looked at the massive migration from the perspectives of younger emigrants. In the preface …

Biology Faculty Articles

Factors accounting for long-term nonprogression may include infection with an attenuated strain of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), genetic polymorphisms in the host, and virus-specific immune responses. In this study, we examined eight individuals with nonprogressing or slowly progressing HIV-1 infection, none of whom were homozygous for host-specific polymorphisms (CCR5-Δ32, CCR2-64I, and SDF-1-3'A) which have been associated with slower disease progression. HIV-1 was recovered from seven of the eight, and recovered virus was used for sequencing the full-length HIV-1 genome; full-length HIV-1 genome sequences from the eighth were determined following amplification of viral …

A Radiation Hybrid Map Of The Cat Genome: Implications For Comparative Mapping, William J. Murphy, Shan Sun, Zhang-Qun Chen, Naoya Yuhki, Deborah Hirschmann, Marilyn Menotti-Raymond, Stephen J. O'Brien May 2000

A Radiation Hybrid Map Of The Cat Genome: Implications For Comparative Mapping, William J. Murphy, Shan Sun, Zhang-Qun Chen, Naoya Yuhki, Deborah Hirschmann, Marilyn Menotti-Raymond, Stephen J. O'Brien

Biology Faculty Articles

Ordered gene maps of mammalian species are becoming increasingly valued in assigning gene variants to function in human and animal models, as well as recapitulating the natural history of genome organization. To extend this power to the domestic cat, a radiation hybrid (RH) map of the cat was constructed integrating 424 Type I-coding genes with 176 microsatellite markers, providing coverage over all 20 feline chromosomes. Alignment of parallel RH maps of human and cat reveal 100 conserved segments ordered (CSOs) between the species, nearly three times the number observed with reciprocal chromosome painting analyses. The observed number is equivalent to …

The Botetourt Dragoons In War And Peace, Michael G. Henkle May 2000

The Botetourt Dragoons In War And Peace, Michael G. Henkle

Honors Theses

This thesis studies a Confederate cavalry company from the immediate prewar years through the war, ending with the death of one of its last members. Most soldiers were residents of Botetourt County, Virginia. The study focuses upon both the men themselves and the battles in which they fought. Letters, diaries, and postwar accounts reveal their thoughts. After the war, many took an active role in both veterans' affairs and their community by joining veteran camps and participating in politics. Near the end, many received pensions or stayed in old soldiers' homes.
