Place, Disease And Mortality: Trimble County, Kentucky 1849-1894, Nancy Demaree

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This researcher describes the characteristics of place...physical, cultural and human...of a small Kentucky county and looks at the incidence of disease and dying that occurred in that place in the last half of the nineteenth century. The impact of death on particular subsets of the general population was given a closer evaluation. Very young, females and the slave/Black communities were investigated individually. The overall site and situation of all aspects of Trimble County, Kentucky were viewed in an effort to support the notion that it is the manner in which man interacts with this environment that causes disease and death …

The Effects Of Interviewer Self-Monitoring On Male Appearance Discrimination In Employment Decisions, Charles Mcdowell May 2000

The Effects Of Interviewer Self-Monitoring On Male Appearance Discrimination In Employment Decisions, Charles Mcdowell

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This research examined the effects of appearance discrimination toward men as regards employment decisions and the extent to which the degree of interviewer selfmonitoring influences these decisions. Past research has indicated that discrimination does indeed occur for women, but no empirical research has been conducted on male discrimination in which hair length has been manipulated. Specifically, length of hair (shoulder length, approximately 1 inch, and balding) was manipulated for potential job applicants. These conditions were examined across different types of jobs (traditionally conservative, neutral, and traditionally liberal). Several hypotheses are offered, with most focused on the concept that those scoring …

Transformations: A Folkloric Exploration Of The Musical Comedy Into The Woods By Stephen Sondheim And James Lapine, Cara Hoglund May 2000

Transformations: A Folkloric Exploration Of The Musical Comedy Into The Woods By Stephen Sondheim And James Lapine, Cara Hoglund

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the use of folktales in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's 1987 award-winning musical Into the Woods. In doing so, I hope to accomplish several directives. First, to enrich understanding of the musical for all audience members, especially those with a folklore or theater background. I feel that understanding the underlying goals and standards that Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine used in creating the musical will provide a much deeper understanding of the genius of their work. I also aim clearly elucidate the merger of folk narrative and popular musical theater form in …

The Impacts Of A Nonindigenous Marine Predator In A California Bay, Edwin D. Grosholz, Gregory M. Ruiz, Cheryl A. Dean, Kim A. Shirley, John L. Maron, Peter G. Connors May 2000

The Impacts Of A Nonindigenous Marine Predator In A California Bay, Edwin D. Grosholz, Gregory M. Ruiz, Cheryl A. Dean, Kim A. Shirley, John L. Maron, Peter G. Connors

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Coastal marine ecosystems worldwide are being altered rapidly by the invasion of nonindigenous species. Unlike terrestrial and freshwater systems, the impacts of an invading species have never been quantified on multiple trophic levels for a marine food web. We measured the impact of the nonindigenous green crab, Carcinus maenas, on a coastal marine food web in central California and found that this predator exerted strong “top-down” control, significantly reducing the abundances of several of the 20 invertebrate species monitored over a 9-yr period. Densities of native clams, Nutricola tantilla and Nutricola confusa, and native shore crabs, Hemigrapsus oregonensis, showed 5-fold …

Fisheries Research Report No. 120 - A 12-Month Survey Of Recreational Fishing In The Leschenault Estuary Of Western Australia During 1998, B E. Malseed, Neil R. Sumner, P C. Williamson

Fisheries Research Reports

A survey of recreational boat-based and shore-based fishing in the Leschenault Estuary was conducted between January 1998 and December 1998. The survey estimated the total annual boat-based recreational fishing effort as 33,392 fisher days, with 86% of this effort targeting blue swimmer crabs. The total annual shore-based recreational fishing effort was estimated to be 5,610 fisher days, with 88% of this effort targeting blue swimmer crabs.

The recreational blue swimmer crab catch from the Leschenault Estuary is substantial and exceeds the reported commercial catch. The estimated total recreational catch of blue swimmer crabs was 219,000 crabs or 45.7 tonnes. This …

The "Tao Te Ching:" A Primer For Developing A Leadership Philosophy, Merilee J. Light May 2000

The "Tao Te Ching:" A Primer For Developing A Leadership Philosophy, Merilee J. Light

Theses and Graduate Projects

A leader's behavior and actions flow from their values and beliefs. The focus of this thesis is to create a forum where people can explore their beliefs around how to positively influence others when in a position of leadership.

The forum is a three-session study group using a 2,500 year-old book of Chinese philosophy called the "Tao Te Ching." The 5,100-word book of 81 aphorisms provides pearls of wisdom on leadership--using nature as the model. Participants documented their leadership philosophy in session 1 and after reading the "Tao Te Ching" in session 3. Session 1 is an introduction to the …

Aspects Of Insect Conservation: Community Effects Of Habitat Patch Edge, Area, And Shape, Sharon L. Osowski May 2000

Aspects Of Insect Conservation: Community Effects Of Habitat Patch Edge, Area, And Shape, Sharon L. Osowski

Biology

The findings of this study have implications for such conservation issues such as habitat fragmentation, reserve planning, and habitat conservation and ecosystem management. This study attempted to answer questions, using an empirical study, on aspects of habitat fragmentation. Current theory about reserve design suggests that: 1) larger areas have higher diversity/abundance than smaller areas; 2) square patches have higher diversity/abundance than linear patches; and 3) patches with hospitable matrices have higher diversity/abundance than inhospitable matrices. This study also adds to the knowledge regarding invertebrate responses to fragmentation. The experimental design was a split-plot multifactorial study. The edge factor had three …

Molecular And Morphological Identification Of An Endophytic Fusarium Isolated From Wheat And Characterization Of Its Laccases In Comparison To Affiliated Fusarium Isolates, Sun Il Kwon May 2000

Molecular And Morphological Identification Of An Endophytic Fusarium Isolated From Wheat And Characterization Of Its Laccases In Comparison To Affiliated Fusarium Isolates, Sun Il Kwon

Biology

A fungal isolate present as a seed endophyte caused disease in wheat and other cereals when grown under stressed conditions. The isolate was identified as a member of the Asian clade of the Gibberella fujikuroi species complex in the genus Fusarium, members of which are known as plant pathogens and producers of mycotoxins. The closest relative to the fungus was Fusarium proliferatum, although none of the previously described species was identical in all morphological and molecular phylogenetic characters. At least six laccase isozymes were detected in mycelial extracts or from extracellular culture filtrates of the Fusarium-wheat isolate. …

Effect Of Multiple Founder Events On Genetic Variation: Transplanted Populations Of Bighorn Sheep (Ovis Canadensis), Bernadette N. Graham May 2000

Effect Of Multiple Founder Events On Genetic Variation: Transplanted Populations Of Bighorn Sheep (Ovis Canadensis), Bernadette N. Graham

Biology

The use of reintroductions has become a widely used tool in the conservation of bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis). In an effort to reestablish populations of bighorn sheep in Utah, 23 individuals from two existing populations in British Columbia, Canada, Tranquille and Harper Ranch, were transplanted to Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake of Utah. The two British Columbian populations had been founded from a native population near William's Lake, also in British Columbia. Small transplanted populations may have lower levels of genetic variation relative to the source population due to the chance loss of alleles following the …

Functional Characterization Of The Nonstructural Protein 2 Of Bluetongue Virus Serotype 17, Gary Christopher Fillmore May 2000

Functional Characterization Of The Nonstructural Protein 2 Of Bluetongue Virus Serotype 17, Gary Christopher Fillmore

Biology

Bluetongue virus (BTV) is an arthropod-borne pathogen that causes bluetongue disease (BD) throughout the world, with economic losses primarily coming from infection of domestic livestock. Although BTV has been well studied at the molecular level since 1969, the mechanism of viral replication has not yet been fully determined. The virus is composed of seven structural and four nonstructural proteins, and the role of each protein has been investigated but has not been conclusively established within the viral life cycle. This study focused on the nonstructural protein NS2 in an attempt to examine its functions as part of the viral replication …

Building The Korean Film Industry's Competitiveness: Abolish The Screen Quota And Subsidize The Film Industry, Carolyn Hyun-Kyung Kim May 2000

Building The Korean Film Industry's Competitiveness: Abolish The Screen Quota And Subsidize The Film Industry, Carolyn Hyun-Kyung Kim

Washington International Law Journal

Under Korean law, local theaters in Korea must show Korean films for at least 146 days each year. In 1998, this screen quota became the subject of heated debate between the United States and the Korean film industry when the United States demanded that Korea abolish it. The United States believes the quota violates free trade principles, while the Korean film industry argues that cultural products such as films cannot be equated with other commercial commodities. Cultural identities must be protected because a diversified global culture benefits all. Domestic film industries should be protected because films constitute a vehicle for …

Diagrams Based On Structured Object Perception, Pourang Irani, Colin Ware May 2000

Diagrams Based On Structured Object Perception, Pourang Irani, Colin Ware

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Most diagrams, particularly those used in software engineering, are line drawings consisting of nodes drawn as rectangles or circles, and edges drawn as lines linking them. In the present paper we review some of the literature on human perception to develop guidelines for effective diagram drawing. Particular attention is paid to structural object recognition theory. According to this theory as objects are perceived they are decomposed into 3D set of primitives called geons, together with the skeleton structure connecting them. We present a set of guidelines for drawing variations on node-link diagrams using geon-like primitives, and provide some examples. Results …

Learning To Look Through The Eyes Of Our Students: Action Research As A Tool Of Inquiry, Joanne Arhar, Gayle A. Buck May 2000

Learning To Look Through The Eyes Of Our Students: Action Research As A Tool Of Inquiry, Joanne Arhar, Gayle A. Buck

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

The story we are about to tell occurred when Gayle was a middle school science teacher and graduate student in Joanne’s seminar on the study of teaching. Gayle was trying to make sense of her science students’ indifference toward the environment, an attitude that concerned her as an environmentalist. She turned her inquiry into an action research project that sought to answer the question, ‘What are the assumptions that my middle school students have about their relationship with the environment?’ Joanne was mentoring Gayle in her action research study, and at the same time exploring Gayle’s perspective as an action …

"Wild Men" And Dissenting Voices: Narrative Disruption In Little House On The Prairie, Donna M. Campbell May 2000

"Wild Men" And Dissenting Voices: Narrative Disruption In Little House On The Prairie, Donna M. Campbell

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Long considered to be a work celebrating traditional pioneer values, Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie, like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, has in recent years come under increasing attack for its stereotypic racial representations and attitudes. In one notable instance, novelist Michael Dorris describes trying to read the novels to his daughters and stopping because of the unfavorable depictions of Native American characters and Ma's "unreconstructed" bigotry. Dorris and others present a compelling argument about the potential negative effects of such representations, yet to dismiss the work as though Wilder's vision of other races represents a …

"Going To Indian Territory": Attitudes Toward Native Americans In Little House On The Prairie, Philip Heldrich

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Since its first printing in 1935, Little House on the Prairie has been a perennial favorite among countless readers. The Little House series itself ranks consistently as one of the most commercially popular of all times. However, Little House on the Prairie, the second book in the series, has become the center of numerous controversies. Yellow Medicine East School District, in Granite, Minnesota, which serves a portion of the Upper Sioux Community of that region, stopped class reading of the book, citing disgust with the text's portrayals of Native Americans. Such action follows a similar banning of the text …

Little Squatter On The Osage Diminished Reserve: Reading Laura Ingalls Wilder's Kansas Indians, Frances W. Kaye May 2000

Little Squatter On The Osage Diminished Reserve: Reading Laura Ingalls Wilder's Kansas Indians, Frances W. Kaye

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Laura Ingalls Wilder was a person of her time and place. She fictionalized her memories to give what she honestly believed was the truest possible account-true in deeply human ways as well as in accurate details-of one family's settlement history on the Great Plains frontier. I have never really liked her work. While my sister read all the Little House books, I read ... Zane Grey. That I do not share Wilder's values and point of view is no argument against the books-I do not share Zane Grey's values and point of view, either. But Zane Grey is not held …
