University of Mississippi News
UNIVERSITY, Miss. -- Hidden in the rocks and crevices deep below the ocean's surface are tiny animals that may hold the keys to treating such dreaded human diseases as malaria, tuberculosis, HIV and even some types of cancer. If so, University of Mississippi graduate Deron Edward Burkepile of Oxford could be the first to know, thanks to a prestigious graduate studies fellowship he won from Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society.

Paper Session I-A - The Von Braun Team, From The Beginnings Of Modern Space Flight To The Future, This Is How We Go!, Ron Caswell
Space Congress® Proceedings
With the desire to help bring the world’s space programs into the future it is helpful to study successful people who have contributed significantly in space endeavors, and see how they made their contributions. The two great men who contributed the most to modern space flight are Wernher von Braun (pronounced: von Brown) and Russian born Sergei Korolev. Werner led the development of the Saturn 5 moon rocket. I believe the Soviet military did Korolev in, more about him later. From the foundations of space exploration these great men laid, the future of human space exploration will be built! My …

Paper Session I-B - Young Nasa Personnel Performing Hands-On Operations On Flight Hardware - A History Of Experiment Integration, Michael E. Haddad
Space Congress® Proceedings
In the early 1980’s, NASA was preparing to launch the first Space Shuttle to begin a new era in USA Spaceflight. At the same time new hardware called “Payloads”, that would be taken into space aboard the Shuttle, were being developed. These Payloads contained a multitude of science experiments from all over the world. Many would be contained in a laboratory called "Spacelab", which was being developed by NASA and the European Space Agency. How would these Payloads be prepared for launch? A concept of allowing NASA personnel to perform the job, that normally a contractor would perform, was reintroduced. …

Low Fasting Plasma Glucose Level As A Predictor Of Cardiovascular Disease And All-Cause Mortality, Ming Wei, Larry W. Gibbons, Tedd L. Mitchell, James B. Kampert, Michael P. Stern, Steven N. Blair
Faculty Publications
Background - Although medical textbooks usually classify fasting plasma glucose <70 or 80 mg/dL (<3.89 or 4.44 mmol/L) as abnormal, the prognosis for patients with low fasting plasma glucose is unclear.
Methods and Results - We conducted prospective cohort studies among 40,069 men and women to investigate the association between fasting plasma glucose levels and cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. We documented a U-shaped relation between fasting plasma glucose and mortality. In addition to diabetes and impaired fasting glucose levels, low fasting plasma glucose levels were also associated with high morality. After multivariate adjustment for age, sex, study population, ethnicity, current smoking status, high blood pressure, total cholesterol, body mass index, triglycerides, history of cardiovascular disease and cancer, and a family …

Phage Therapy : An Alternative To Antibiotics, Maria A. Appeaning
Phage Therapy : An Alternative To Antibiotics, Maria A. Appeaning
Electronic Dissertations and Theses
Bacteria resistant to most or all available antibiotics are causing increasingly serious problems and raising widespread fears of returning to a pre-antibiotic era of untreatable infections and epidemics. Despite intensive work by drug companies, no new classes of antibiotics have been found in the last 30 years . There are hopes that the newfound ability to sequence entire microbial genomes and to determine the molecular bases of pathogenicity will open new avenues for treating infectious disease, but other approaches are also being sought with increasing fervor. One result is a renewed interest in the possibilities of bacteriophage (phage) therapy - …
Sickle Cell Disease: Animal Models And Gene Therapy, Francesca M. Mellion
Sickle Cell Disease: Animal Models And Gene Therapy, Francesca M. Mellion
Electronic Dissertations and Theses
Sickle cell disease is a worldwide health problem in countries ranging from its origin, Africa, to the United States of America. The understanding of sickle cell disease dates to Zimbabwe in the 1940's. Sickle cell trait is the term used to describe healthy unaffected carriers (heterozygous) of the genetic condition known as Sickle Cell Disease. It is estimated that there are about 100,000 genes in the human body and each of them codes for a different trait. About 5,000 of these genes are known to carry mutations serious enough to cause genetic diseases. This research deal with sickle cell mice …
