DMSO reductase (DMSOR) from Rhodobacter capsulatus, well-characterised as a molybdoenzyme, will bind tungsten. Protein crystallography has shown that tungsten in W-DMSOR is ligated by the dithiolene group of the two pyranopterins, the oxygen atom of Ser147 plus another oxygen atom, and is located in a very similar site to that of molybdenum in Mo-DMSOR. These conclusions are consistent with W LIII-edge X-ray absorption, EPR and UV/visible spectroscopic data. W-DMSOR is significantly more active than Mo-DMSOR in catalysing the reduction of DMSO but, in contrast to the latter, shows no significant ability to catalyse the oxidation of DMS.

The Effects Of Silviculture And Prescribed Burning On Herpetofauna In Florida Sand-Pine Scrub, Stig Ravdal
The Effects Of Silviculture And Prescribed Burning On Herpetofauna In Florida Sand-Pine Scrub, Stig Ravdal
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Florida sand pine scrub is among the most endangered habitats in the United States and much of the remaining scrub is heavily influenced by management for timber production. In this study the effects of timber management practices on herpetofaunal community diversity and composition were investigated on experimentally manipulated plots near Orlando, Florida. Plots at three sites were either harvested, burned, or treated as a control (unmanipulated). Herpetofauna were trapped using pit-fall drift-fence trapping arrays. Animals were counted, measured, marked and released from March 1996 to June 1998. During this time period 1489 reptiles and amphibians were caught from 31 different …

Soil Health And Sustainability: Managing The Biotic Component Of Soil Quality, John W. Doran, Michael R. Zeiss
Soil Health And Sustainability: Managing The Biotic Component Of Soil Quality, John W. Doran, Michael R. Zeiss
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Soil health is the capacity of soil to function as a vital living system, within ecosystem and land-use boundaries, to sustain plant and animal productivity, maintain or enhance water and air quality, and promote plant and animal health. Anthropogenic reductions in soil health, and of individual components of soil quality, are a pressing ecological concern. A conference entitled ‘Soil Health: Managing the Biological Component of Soil Quality’ was held was held in the USA in November 1998 to help increase awareness of the importance and utility of soil organisms as indicators of soil quality and determinants of soil health. Restricted Words By Adjacencies, Don Rawlings
Restricted Words By Adjacencies, Don Rawlings
Mathematics
A recurrence, a determinant formula, and generating functions are presented for enumerating words with restricted letters by adjacencies. The main theorem leads to refinements (with up to two additional parameters) of known results on compositions, polyominoes, and permutations. Among the examples considered are (1) the introduction of the ascent variation on compositions, (2) the enumeration of directed vertically convex polyominoes by upper descents, area, perimeter, relative height, and column number, (3) a tri-variate extension of MacMahon's determinant formula for permutations with prescribed descent set, and (4) a combinatorial setting for an entire sequence of bibasic Bessel functions.

Disclosed is a chimeric isoprenoid synthase polypeptide including a first domain from a first isoprenoid synthase joined to a second domain from a second, heterologous isoprenoid synthase, whereby the chimeric isoprenoid synthase is capable of catalyzing the production of isoprenoid reaction products that are not produced in the absence of the second domain of the second, heterologous isoprenoid synthase. Also disclosed is a chimeric isoprenoid synthase polypeptide including an asymmetrically positioned homologous domain, whereby the chimeric isoprenoid synthase is capable of catalyzing the production of isoprenoid reaction products that are not produced when the domain is positioned at its naturally-occurring …

Successful Fund-Raisers Can Be More Fun Than Chore, Adrian Aumen
University of Mississippi News
Amid myriad options for summertime fun, the task of raising funds for a favorite charity doesn't have to be a chore or a bore. Following a few simple rules for designing and marketing a fund-raiser leads to more success and more fun for organizers and participants alike, said Lori Topp, assistant director of marketing at The University of Mississippi.

An optical coherence tomography(OCT) and spectral interferometry imaging probe for the automatic screening and diagnosis of cervical and skin cancer in vivo. The probe eliminates the old techniques of having to perform Pap smears followed by a biopsy, known as colposcopy. The novel probe is cylindrical in shape and has a disposable outer plastic shield. Inside the probe is a motor driven rotatable casing having a planar optical fiber bundle array therein. The fiber bundle array has plastic light coupling lenslet arrays on both ends. The exposed end of the probe has one lenslet array disc that couples light between …

Univercity News (2000-06-05)
UniverCity News, 1998-2001
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

1. Transgenic Manipulation of the Gene Copy Number of Hsp70, Which Encodes the Major Inducible Heat-Shock Protein of Drosophila Melanogaster (Hsp70), Affects Both Hsp70 Levels and Inducible Thermotolerance in the Laboratory; Here Parallel Effects in Transgenic Drosophila Larvae Undergoing Natural or Simulated Natural Thermal Stress Are Demonstrated. 2. Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Breed differences in performance characteristics are an important genetic resource for improving efficiency of beef production. Diverse breeds are required to exploit heterosis and complementarity through crossbreeding and composite populations to match genetic potential with diverse markets, feed resources and climates. Beef producers are under increasing pressure to reduce fat while maintaining or improving tenderness and palatability of products. No single breed excels in all traits of importance to beef production. Previous results have shown that Bos indicus X Bos taurus (e.g., Brahman, Sahiwal and Nellore sired F1 cows out of Hereford and Angus dams) crosses were exceptionally productive …

Office of the Vice President for Research
Message From the Vice Provost for Research It is a pleasure for me to release this 2000 annual report, which summarizes the University of New Mexico's (UNM) sponsored activities for fiscal year 2000 (i.e., July 1, 1999 - June 30, 2000, FY00). The purpose of this report is to present statistics of FY99 sponsored research, public service and instruction efforts at the main campus and Health Sciences Center (HSC). UNM, a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University-Extensive, is ranked in the top 60 of the nation's public universities and colleges, based on annual research and development (R&D) expenditures (see p. 11).
