Solid Phase Organic Synthesis: Investigation Of Resins And Linkers For Phenols, Laurie Seifert Jul 2000

Solid Phase Organic Synthesis: Investigation Of Resins And Linkers For Phenols, Laurie Seifert

Theses

A loading and cleaving study was performed on solid phase to determine the optimal linkers and conditions for phenols, a key functional group in photographic couplers. Fourteen different commercially available resins were analyzed. Of these, ArgoGel Wang CI was determined the best for loading and cleaving the model phenol coupler. Yields of 95% for both loading and cleaving were achieved as determined by MAS Nanoprobe NMR and HPLC respectively. A few others gave great loading (90- 100%) such as Merrifield, Brominated Wang, Bromo PPOA, and TentaGel COOH, however poor cleavage ability rendered these resins insufficient for phenols.

Role Of Lipolysis And Lipogenesis In The Development Of Diet-Induced Obesity, Michael John Davies Jul 2000

Role Of Lipolysis And Lipogenesis In The Development Of Diet-Induced Obesity, Michael John Davies

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Obesity is an increasingly common public health problem with approximately one-half of the American adult population overweight and one-quarter considered obese. This alarming trend has led researchers to determine potential causative factors of excess weight gain in humans. However, it is difficult to discern whether perturbations that result in obesity are the cause or simply the result of the obese state. Diet-induced obesity is one of the animal models that allow researchers to address temporal issues. Our laboratory utilizes a diet-induced obesity model in which Sprague-Dawley rats are placed on a purified moderately high fat diet and ultimately diverge into …

Victimless Crime: A Comparison Of Public Offense Ratings Of Misdemeanor Offenses And Virginia Sentencing Guidelines, Theresa M. Dutton

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

This study was designed to explore the hypothesized gap between what state guidelines on criminal sanctioning recommend for misdemeanor offenses, and what the public perceives· as just punishment for these offenses. The research also addresses the issue of victimless crime. In this regard it was additionally hypothesized that there exists a significant difference in public opinion towards sentencing those crimes that specifically do not have a victim, with those that do.

The design of this study is based on one conducted by Peter Rossi and Richard Berk (Rossi and Berk 1997). For this study, a sample of students attending college …

An Ultrastructural Survey Of The Nuchal Glands Of Rhabdophis Tigrinus (Serpentes: Colubridae), Kathleen A. Roberts Jul 2000

An Ultrastructural Survey Of The Nuchal Glands Of Rhabdophis Tigrinus (Serpentes: Colubridae), Kathleen A. Roberts

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Rhabdophis tigrinus, an Asian natricine snake, possesses a series of integumentary glands located in the nuchal skin. Previous studies indicated that the nuchal glands are of mesodermal origin, contain cardiac steroids analogous to bufotoxins found in the parotoid glands of toads, which are included in the snake's diet. The nuchal glands are defensive in function. Preliminary histological studies revealed differences in quality of the gland tissue compared to previous studies, and difference in fixation techniques were suspected. Seven specimens of R. tigrinus were fixed by perfusion using a conservative fixation process standard for electron microscopy. The nuchal gland series …

Mechanistic Characterization Of The Mitochondrial Type I Dna Topoisomerase And A Study Of Genes Containing Type I Dna Topoisomerase-Related Domains, Jaydee Dones Cabral Jul 2000

Mechanistic Characterization Of The Mitochondrial Type I Dna Topoisomerase And A Study Of Genes Containing Type I Dna Topoisomerase-Related Domains, Jaydee Dones Cabral

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

The mitochondrial type I DNA topoisomerase (mt-topo I) serves an important function in the mitochondrion by relaxing mtDNA supercoils to allow for replication of the mitochondrial genome as well as for gene expression. The mt-topo I's role in essential processes, such as replication and transcription, makes it an ideal candidate as a target for antitumor or antifungal drugs. To gain further insight into mt-topo I mechanism, a cleavage assay and drug inhibition studies were performed. As well, a search for the mt-topo I gene or genes containing type I topoisomerase-related domains was conducted. To characterize the mt-topo I mechanism, the …

Lester Dowdy's Carnival, Gillian M. Devereux Jul 2000

Lester Dowdy's Carnival, Gillian M. Devereux

English Theses & Dissertations

In this manuscript, I attempt to reveal what Don DeLillo has called "the world inside the world." The manuscript's title and structure explore the dichotomy between a thing's interior and its exterior. A carnival, on its surface, is a collection of amusements: rides, games, barkers, cotton candy, and the like. However, as the title poem suggests, the word carnival also represents a time for celebration, general merry-making, and, in its most archaic sense, the liturgical season just before Lent. Thus, one can view a carnival as an amusement, or as a prelude to sacrifice and penance, or as a …

A Flowchart Structure For Modification Of A Modsim Process Model, Murali K. Adatrao Jul 2000

A Flowchart Structure For Modification Of A Modsim Process Model, Murali K. Adatrao

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

There are many software processes and software development models that support the development of a software model prior to implementation. However, more often than not, these practices are not followed resulting in a lack of documentation of the intended functionality of the software. As a result, software often becomes a black box for later developers. Even a simple bug fix can turn into an exhaustive task for the developers, as they must attempt to infer the intended system behavior. New designers cannot make any changes to the software or extend the software behavior, as the underlying model within the software …

Simulation Studies Of Cellular Electroporation Due To Ultra-Fast Electric Pulses, Gayathri R. Barthaki Jul 2000

Simulation Studies Of Cellular Electroporation Due To Ultra-Fast Electric Pulses, Gayathri R. Barthaki

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Biological systems, from cells to ecosystems, are intrinsically complex information-processing networks. It often becomes difficult to predict their behavior during an experimental investigation, as their behavior is fundamentally chaotic, Hence, building models that mimic the dynamics of such systems and performing computer simulations would help in understanding, predicting, controlling and optimizing these systems. This thesis is aimed at the development of a mathematical model for the process of electroporation in biological cells when they are subjected to ultra-fast electric pulses and at conducting simulations to understand its dynamic behavior with special emphasis on the physics of ultra-short time scales.

Comparative Systematics Of Subterranean Amphipod Crustaceans In The Families Crangonyctidae And Bogidiellidae, Stefan Koenemann

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The research project presented in this doctoral dissertation deals with the systematics of two different taxonomic groups of subterranean amphipods (Crustacea). Therefore, rather than being a single project, this study is divided into several sub-projects. Altogether, the chapters for the sub-projects are composed of five publications. An introductory chapter and a summarizing discussion are added to provide a structural unit for the collection of papers and to compare the results of the individual projects.

The thesis investigates the systematics of the amphipod families Bogidiellidae Hertzog, 1936, and Crangonyctidae Bousfield, 1973. Based on descriptive taxonomy according to modern standards, revisions are …

Conservation Conundrum, Robert L. Brownell Jr., Barbara E. Curry, Peter Daszak, Andrew A. Cunningham, Alex D. Hyatt Jun 2000

Conservation Conundrum, Robert L. Brownell Jr., Barbara E. Curry, Peter Daszak, Andrew A. Cunningham, Alex D. Hyatt

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

P. Daszak, A. A. Cunningham, and A. D. Hyatt present a convincing argument in their Review "Emerging infectious diseases of wildlife-threats to biodiversity and human health" (Science's Compass, 21 Jan., p. 443) that emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) pose a risk to wildlife, and they suggest that EIDs most often result from a change in the ecology of the pathogen or the host (or both). A situation they did not mention is that in some cases, the protection of threatened species can increase the risk of an EID outbreak by allowing a close association between wildlife and domestic animals where one …

Digestibility, Nitrogen Excretion, And Mean Retention Time By North American Porcupines (Erethizon Dorsatum) Consuming Natural Forages, Laura A. Felicetti, Lisa A. Shipley, Gary W. Witmer, Charles T. Robbins

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

North American porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum) subsist predominantly on low-protein, high-fiber, high-tannin diets. Therefore, we measured the porcupine's ability to digest dry matter, fiber, and protein by conducting digestion trials on eight natural forages and one pelleted ration varying in concentration of fiber, nitrogen, and tannins. On these diets, dry matter intake ranged from 5 to 234 g/kg 0.75/d and dry matter digestibility ranged from 62% to 96%. Porcupines digested highly lignified fiber better than many large hindgut fermenters and ruminants. The porcupine's ability to digest fiber may be explained, in part, by their lengthy mean retention time …
