Review Of Landscapes Of The New West: Gender And Geography In Contemporary Women's Writing By Krista Comer, Brigitte Georgi-Findlay Oct 2000

Review Of Landscapes Of The New West: Gender And Geography In Contemporary Women's Writing By Krista Comer, Brigitte Georgi-Findlay

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Claiming the New Western History as its most enabling context, Comer's study traces the genealogy of recent female regionalist writing, locating its roots in the civil rights movement, feminism, and postmodernism. This is an obvious challenge to those who claim Western regionalism as the very antidote to postmodernism. Moreover, by including writers of color in her discussion, Comer questions the idea that Western regionalism is only a "white thing."

Through issues of gender, landscape, and geography, Comer focuses in each of her chapters on a different kind of landscape-urban, wild, erotic, national. The Great Plains do not seem to fit …

Contesting Tradition And Combating Intolerance A History Of Free Thought In Kansas, Aaron K. Ketchell Oct 2000

Contesting Tradition And Combating Intolerance A History Of Free Thought In Kansas, Aaron K. Ketchell

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Diversity is the hallmark of freethought in Kansas, for freethinkers were never a homogeneous body. The movement was not only religious, or for that matter, anti-religious, although the majority of social and political issues that it addressed had religious grounding. No one specific organized group dominated historical Kansas freethinking. Instead, individuals in the form of editors of various newspapers, journals, and book series became the landmarks by which the course of the movement's history may be most easily traced. Although the attitudes of freethinkers toward religion are the primary concern of this essay, it must be remembered that freethinkers had …

Review Of No More Free Markets Or Free Beer: The Progressive Era In Nebraska, 1900-1924 By Burton W. Folsom Jr., Harl A. Dalstrom Oct 2000

Review Of No More Free Markets Or Free Beer: The Progressive Era In Nebraska, 1900-1924 By Burton W. Folsom Jr., Harl A. Dalstrom

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In 1920 German Catholic voters in Saint Helena, Cedar County, cast seventy percent of their ballots for Marie Weekes, the Nonpartisan League candidate for Congress and a supporter of prohibition. What had driven beer-loving, anti-woman suffrage German-Americans to vote for the female candidate of an agrarian radical organization? Such major changes in Nebraska's political life are the subject of this book.

As its title suggests, Burton Folsom emphasizes the triumph of governmental socio-economic intervention over the principles of laissez faire. In a well-balanced, highly readable narrative, he analyzes the values of]. Sterling Morton, William Jennings Bryan, and George W. Norris-the …

The Use Of An Ethnic Food Frequency Questionnaire Among Hispanic Women, Susan Jordan Oct 2000

The Use Of An Ethnic Food Frequency Questionnaire Among Hispanic Women, Susan Jordan

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The objective of this study was to determine if an Ethnic Food Frequency questionnaire more accurately reflected food intake among immigrant Hispanic women compared to US-born Hispanic women. Participants in the study consisted of 30 immigrant and 25 US-born Hispanic low-income women living in the Grand Island, Nebraska, area. A traditional food frequency questionnaire used by the Nebraska Women, Infants, and Children's (WIC) Special Supplemental Food program and a modified questionnaire containing ethnic foods were administered to the women. The immigrant group consumed more of the traditional Hispanic foods than did the US-born group. A traditional food frequency questionnaire that …

Review Of Terrestrial Ecoregions Of North America: A Conservation Assessment By Taylor H. Ricketts And Eric Dinerstein, O. W. Archibold Oct 2000

Review Of Terrestrial Ecoregions Of North America: A Conservation Assessment By Taylor H. Ricketts And Eric Dinerstein, O. W. Archibold

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Terrestrial Ecoregions of North America provides a comprehensive assessment of the status of biodiversity and conservation within the United States and Canada. Part of a global program conducted by the World Wildlife Fund, it is essentially a reference work offering baseline data for conservation planning and restoration. The book emphasises the precarious condition of many natural areas in North America, at the same time illustrating the great diversity that still exists in some areas and stressing the sense of urgency required to ensure the preservation of viable plant and animal populations in their natural habitats. It is not a textbook …

The Phases Of 2d Ncos, Vatche Sahakian Oct 2000

The Phases Of 2d Ncos, Vatche Sahakian

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We study the phases of the (1+1)-dimensional Non-Commutative Open String theory on a circle. We find that the length scale of non-commutativity increases at strong coupling, the coupling in turn being dressed by a power of D-string charge. The system is stringy at around this length scale, with dynamics involving an interplay between the open and wrapped closed strings sectors. Above this energy scale and at strong coupling, and below it at weak coupling, the system acquires a less stringy character. The near horizon geometry of the configuration exhibits several intriguing features, such as a flip in the dilaton field …

The Toxicology Of Aluminum In The Brain: A Review, Robert A. Yokel Oct 2000

The Toxicology Of Aluminum In The Brain: A Review, Robert A. Yokel

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Aluminum is environmentally ubiquitous, providing human exposure. Usual human exposure is primarily dietary. The potential for significant Al absorption from the nasal cavity and direct distribution into the brain should be further investigated. Decreased renal function increases human risk of Al-induced accumulation and toxicity. Brain Al entry from blood may involve transferrin-receptor mediated endocytosis and a more rapid process transporting small molecular weight Al species. There appears to be Al efflux from the brain, probably as Al citrate. There is prolonged retention of a fraction of Al that enters the brain, suggesting the potential for accumulation with repeated exposure. Al …

Lost And Found: Researching The Second Amendment, Robert J. Spitzer Oct 2000

Lost And Found: Researching The Second Amendment, Robert J. Spitzer

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The recent proliferation of writings on the Second Amendment makes numerous claims including: (1) there has been little or no legal scholarship on the Second Amendment until recent times; (2) the "individualist" view of the Second Amendment is the dominant or mainstream paradigm; (3) the courts have committed a "dereliction of duty" insofar as they have been silent on, or indifferent to, interpretation of the Second Amendment; and (4) since three of the four Supreme Court cases concerning the Second Amendment were decided in the nineteenth century, the court doctrine is somehow defective, irrelevant, outdated, unclear, or "embarrassing." In this …

Utilization And Integration Of Technology By Teachers: A Case Study, Dawn Shipley Basinger Oct 2000

Utilization And Integration Of Technology By Teachers: A Case Study, Dawn Shipley Basinger

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the learning process of teachers as they begin to implement an innovation. The research problem was based on the need to understand better the processes by which teachers come to integrate technology into their instructional practices. The Concerns-Based Adoption Model (Hall, Wallace, & Dossett, 1973) provided the conceptual framework for facilitating change in teachers' use of technology to support instructional practices. The constructivist approach to learning characterized the setting for the courses-Introduction to Technology for Teachers (ITT) and Software Applications, Teaching Methods, and Software Development for Teachers ( AMDT …

New Beef Zone - The Potential For Beef And Cattle Industry Expansion In The Western Australian Wheatbelt, Alan Peggs, Andrew Quinn, Jason Kelly Oct 2000

New Beef Zone - The Potential For Beef And Cattle Industry Expansion In The Western Australian Wheatbelt, Alan Peggs, Andrew Quinn, Jason Kelly

Animal production and livestock published reports

Agriculture Western Australia (WA) recently completed a comprehensive analysis of the Western Australian beef and cattle industry entitled, “Rising Above the Herd” (Quin and Manners 1999). A key finding was the need to determine areas where store cattle could be produced competitively in the future. This was in the light of beef production in existing areas such as the South West and western South Coast being “squeezed” out by competition from alternative enterprises. This analysis has been prepared at the request of Agriculture WA to determine the potential for the Wheatbelt to produce store cattle competitively.

The study:

  • embraces a …

The Second Amendment In Context: The Case Of The Vanishing Predicate, H. Richard Uviller, William G. Merkel Oct 2000

The Second Amendment In Context: The Case Of The Vanishing Predicate, H. Richard Uviller, William G. Merkel

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Uviller and Merkel argue that the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms was intended by the framers (and, perhaps more importantly, understood by the ratifiers) to be intimately bound up in the ideal of service in the lawfully established militia-for many eighteenth-century Americans, the preferred alternative to that "bane of liberty," the standing army. But as Uviller and Merkel set out to show, the historic common militia celebrated in the republican ideology of eighteenth-century Whigs was already on the road to obsolescence when the Second Amendment became law. By the middle of the nineteenth century, few citizens mustered …

Cost-Benefit Default Principles, Cass R. Sunstein Oct 2000

Cost-Benefit Default Principles, Cass R. Sunstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

In an important but thus far unnoticed development, federal courts have created a new series of "default principles" for statutory interpretation, authorizing regulatory agencies, when statutes are unclear, (a) to exempt trivial risks from regulation and thus to develop a kind of common law of "acceptable risks," (b) to take account of substitute risks created by regulation, and thus to engage in "health-health" tradeoffs, (c) to consider whether compliance with regulation is feasible, (d) to take costs into account, and (e) to engage in cost-benefit balancing, and thus to develop a kind of common law of cost-benefit analysis. These cost-benefit …

Rnase L-Independent Specific 28s Rrna Cleavage In Murine Coronavirus-Infected Cells, Sangeeta Banerjee, Sungwhan An, Aimin Zhou, Robert H. Silverman, Shinji Makino

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We characterized a novel 28S rRNA cleavage in cells infected with the murine coronavirus mouse hepatitis virus (MHV). The 28S rRNA cleavage occurred as early as 4 h postinfection (p.i.) in MHV-infected DBT cells, with the appearance of subsequent cleavage products and a decrease in the amount of intact 28S rRNA with increasing times of infection; almost all of the intact 28S rRNA disappeared by 24 h p.i. In contrast, no specific 18S rRNA cleavage was detected in infected cells. MHV-induced 28S rRNA cleavage was detected in all MHV-susceptible cell lines and all MHV strains tested. MHV replication was required …
