As early as 1993, GTZ was one of the first organizations to recognize the importance of community mine awareness within the framework of mine survey and clearance operations. GTZ also recognized that there needs to be a partnership between the development organization and mine clearance operator. It is this partnership, which is the foundation upon which the IHDD concept has been built, modified and adapted. In February 1999, an U.S. interagency team of humanitarian demining experts, including representatives of the Office of the Secretary of Defense, State Department, and U.S. European Command, visited South Africa. The purpose of this visit was to familiarize the team with South African demining research and development (R&D), and operations; and to conduct meetings on possible areas of cooperation between the two countries. This initiative was an outgrowth of the U.S. South Africa Bi-national Commission (BNC), which is chaired by Vice President Al Gore and Deputy President Thabo Mbeki.

Landmines are a bad thing. I know that. You know that. Everyone at Ottawa knew that. Even the Angolan Representative who signed the Mine Ban Treaty in Ottawa in December of 1997 knew that. But someone forgot to tell Dr. Jonas Savimbi. Whatever we may think of him, the head of Angola's UNITA (Union for Total Liberation of Angola) liberation group is not out of place in history along with many others intent on being King and overthrowing what they see as a repressive government. Landmines, it seems, are simply a tool in a deadly toolbox.

Sometimes the creation of a new policy or international initiative can produce unexpected results. Such is the case in the desert of Western Egypt where the legacy of mine warfare of World War II warriors is only now being assessed seriously through the focus of current mine action activities. Despite the fact that the great armies of Field Marshals Montgomery and Rommel fought in North Africa almost sixty years ago, the legacy of those surges and counter surges, sieges and counter sieges, is still being felt by the inhabitants and Bedouins who live or travel there.

In the film version of Hermann Wouk's War and Remembrance, the Polish Jewish professor Aaron Jastrow and his American Jewish niece Nathalie fall into the trap of the monstrous Nazi genocidal machine and are interned at Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia. Upon their arrival there, they are initially treated with brutality until Professor Jastrow reminds their Nazi captors, "We are under Swiss protection." Thereafter, they receive noticeably better treatment. Although Aaron Jastrow later perishes in a gas chamber at Auschwitz, Nathalie owes her own escape from the same camp and her eventual rescue by the Americans at Weimar, Germany in April, …

Thermal contact resistance (TCR) at the plastic-metal interface is one of the parameters required for the simulation of plastic processing techniques such as injection molding. However, the available data is both unreliable and insufficient due to the difficulties involved in measuring this parameter. The effects of thermal contact resistance on the heat transfer in plastics processing with particular reference to injection molding of thermoplastics is investigated using combined experimental measurement techniques, parametric studies and numerical analysis.

Roper examines the use of the terms sword and cimeter in a Mesoamerican setting as well as in the Book of Mormon text. The macuahuitl was a fearsome weapon consisting of a long, flat piece of hardwood with grooves along the side into which sharp fragments of flint or obsidian were set and glued. Our knowledge of this weapon comes more from written accounts than actual artifacts because few specimens have survived. The Book of Mormon sword of Laban was used as a model for making swords, but they were not necessarily made of the same material. The discussion in …

From October 1984 to July 1985, the Center for Archaeological Research of The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted testing and mitigation on a three-block area intended to become a shopping center in downtown San Antonio. The project was bounded on the north by Crockett Street, on the east by Bowie Street, on the south by Commerce Street, and on the west by Bonham Street. Information on the mapping and test excavations at 12 historic sites and total excavation of a well and a number of privies is reported in this publication. Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) of The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted a pedestrian survey and subsurface backhoe testing for cultural resources on the raw water pipeline route for the Medio Creek Water Treatment Plant and sites of the treatment plant and the raw water intake on the bank of the Medina River in southwestern Bexar County, Texas. The pipeline route traverses ca. 1.6 km of alluvial terrace associated with the Medina River and Medio Creek, including a crossing of Medio Creek. Limited geomorphological observations also were made. Few cultural remains were encountered, none diagnostic of a …
