Extension's Role With Farmers' Markets: Working With Farmers, Consumers, And Communities, Jennifer Abel, Joan Thomson, Audrey Maretzki Oct 1999

Extension's Role With Farmers' Markets: Working With Farmers, Consumers, And Communities, Jennifer Abel, Joan Thomson, Audrey Maretzki

Journal of Extension

Farmers' markets are popular outlets for fresh food in many communities. Consumers choose to shop at these markets for a number of reasons, including freshness, appearance, and taste of produce, as well as enjoying the atmosphere of such a market. In addition to these benefits to consumers, farmers' markets serve the vendors who sell at them and the communities in which they are located in economic, educational, and social ways. This article examines the multiple benefits of farmers' markets and suggests ways that Extension can continue to take an active role in furthering their growth and development.

Empowerment: What Is It?, Nanette Page, Cheryl E. Czuba Oct 1999

Empowerment: What Is It?, Nanette Page, Cheryl E. Czuba

Journal of Extension

Many use the term empowerment without understanding what it really means. A literature review resulted in no clear definition of the concept, especially one that could cross-disciplinary lines. This article defines empowerment as a multi-dimensional social process that helps people gain control over their own lives. It is a process that fosters power in people for use in their own lives, their communities and in their society, by acting on issues they define as important. The Connecticut People Empowering People program uses this definition to connect research, theory, and practice.

Missouri Master Gardener Demographics, Denny S. Schrock, Mary Meyer, Peter Ascher, Mark Snyder Oct 1999

Missouri Master Gardener Demographics, Denny S. Schrock, Mary Meyer, Peter Ascher, Mark Snyder

Journal of Extension

A survey was conducted of Missouri Master Gardeners to identify their demographics and to determine if Master Gardeners fit general volunteer demographic patterns. Females accounted for 65% of respondents and males 35%. Those in their 40's comprised the largest demographic group. The majority were married with children; over 50% had at least a college degree; one-third had household incomes of $60,000 or greater; most were long-term residents of small towns or rural areas. Missouri Master Gardener demographics fit the pattern of volunteers in general, but demographic data proved to be a poor predictor of intent to continue volunteering.

Ohenmaa's Role In Ashante My Experience & View On Community, Michelle Castro Oct 1999

Ohenmaa's Role In Ashante My Experience & View On Community, Michelle Castro

African Diaspora ISPs

My writing touches upon the different roles of Queenmothers. By no means is it an in- depth look into her role in different regions of Ghana, but concentrates on her spiritual, traditional role & presently changing role in Ashanti. A chapter is also given to Yaa Asantewaa. The second component of my project consists of photographs that convey the symbolism of unity and show how interconnected the community is to the institution of Ashanti Chieftaincy on an everyday basis.

Traditional Birth Attendants In Modern Ghana A Discussion Of Maternal Health Care, Emily Kennedy Oct 1999

Traditional Birth Attendants In Modern Ghana A Discussion Of Maternal Health Care, Emily Kennedy

African Diaspora ISPs

Ghanaian women have been delivering their own babies for almost two thousand years now, using knowledge passed down from their elders and medicines prepared from herbs. It has only been in the past one hundred years that scientific medicines and institutions have been introduced to this country, yet more and more individuals are turning to these doctors and hospitals for care before, during and after pregnancies. The role of traditional birth attendants, (TBAs), has begun to be questioned as well as attacked for its more religious and holistic approach which is resulting in a growing schism between the TBAs and …

The Problem With "All For One And One For All" Expectations: Differential Effects Of Race And Commitment In The Workplace, James R. Jones

Marketing and Management Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

“The examples cited here reinforce the need for theoreticians and practitioners alike to consider the difficulties that may arise from viewing people through a single lens.” As far back as 1968, with the findings of the Kerner Commission, there have been reports of "two Americans, separate and unequal." Indeed, the recent commission on race formed by President Clinton reached much the same conclusion. While three decades separate the work of two groups, the main inference drawn is strikingly consistent with regard to race. There is a persistent chasm in how majority group and minority group members view and are viewed …

Difficult Maneuvers In Discourse Against Latina Immigrants In The United States, Josh Price Oct 1999

Difficult Maneuvers In Discourse Against Latina Immigrants In The United States, Josh Price

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article critiques the tendency to homogenize violence against women, emphasizing the importance of recognizing its diverse forms and contexts. It focuses on the experiences of immigrant Latinas, particularly those in abusive relationships, and explores how legal, cultural, and ideological factors uniquely constrain their options. By examining the work of a Latina activist, the analysis highlights the need to address the intersection of gender, immigration, and domestic violence through a more nuanced lens. The article advocates for structural changes to empower immigrant women and challenge the existing legal and cultural frameworks that perpetuate their subjugation.

How Many People Does It Take To Save A Drowning Baby?: A Good Samaritan Statute In Washington State, Sungeeta Jain Oct 1999

How Many People Does It Take To Save A Drowning Baby?: A Good Samaritan Statute In Washington State, Sungeeta Jain

Washington Law Review

For the past three years, the Washington legislature has considered a Good Samaritan bill, nicknamed the "Joey Levick Bill," that would impose a duty to summon assistance for those known to be substantially injured. This Comment argues that the bill is minimally intrusive and should be acceptable to autonomous individuals, because it requires a bystander merely to notify the appropriate authorities is if the bystander sees someone who is substantially injured. The bill also addresses the concerns about sinister abuse of the law by criminals feigning injury, by not requiring an individual to attempt a physical rescue. In addition, the …
