Can We Face The Landmine Victims?, Clarice Taylor Oct 1999

Can We Face The Landmine Victims?, Clarice Taylor

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

A crowd of "mutilados," Portuguese for the mutilated ones, gathered outside the CARE office in Menongue, Angola. Among them were a few with prosthetic limbs, mostly ill fitting. As for the rest of the legless, they got around on crutches that looked like found objects. Several people in the crowd had lost an arm, one person was missing both. Another man had the requisite number of arms and legs, but no hands. These were survivors of landmines.

Effect Of Conventional Weapons On Civilian Injuries, Robin M. Coupland, Hans O. Samnegaard Oct 1999

Effect Of Conventional Weapons On Civilian Injuries, Robin M. Coupland, Hans O. Samnegaard

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

The use of weapons against people or targets containing people inevitably has a direct impact on the health of those people. This impact is related to factors dependent on the design of weapons and on their use. The nature of injury is closely related to the design of the weapon; wounds from bullets, fragments, and buried anti-personnel mines are distinguishable. Factors dependent on the user, such as discipline and desire to avoid or injure civilians, determine the number and kind of people injured and may, in the case of bullets, determine which part of the body is injured. This century …

Mercy Across Borders, Maureen Morton Oct 1999

Mercy Across Borders, Maureen Morton

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

What is it worth when a life is on the line and every moment counts? Will initial first aid arrive? Is emergency surgery available? Are painkillers and antibiotics guaranteed? The landmine victim now waits for help that varies in quality according to international funding and whatever remains of post-conflict medical and community infrastructure. Prosthetics, physio, occupational , psychological therapies and home care are serious issues; conspicuous by their absence. Independent life skills need to be learned, and occupational training depends on the availability of work and on the type, degree and combination of disabilities.

Doctors Without Borders, Cisr Journal

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

When a natural or a man-made disaster strikes a developing country, death and disease is often compounded by a lack of adequate medical care. In many war-torn countries, animosity is so great between warring factions that medical care is often denied to those in need because of their religion, ethnic identity, or political affiliations. In such cases, who will help the helpless? In 1971, a group of concerned physicians established Doctors Without Borders/ Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), to provide emergency assistance wherever wars and man-made disasters occur. Since then, MSF has grown into the world's largest independent international medical relief …

Sub-State Purchasing Of Managed Behavioral Health Care: An Analysis Of County-Level Managed Care Contracts, Joel B. Teitelbaum, D. Richard Mauery, Sara J. Rosenbaum Oct 1999

Sub-State Purchasing Of Managed Behavioral Health Care: An Analysis Of County-Level Managed Care Contracts, Joel B. Teitelbaum, D. Richard Mauery, Sara J. Rosenbaum

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

For this study, SAMHSA asked us to analyze county-level managed health care contracts that include behavioral health services. SAMHSA has indicated that sub-state entities, particularly counties, are beginning to explore the feasibility of contracting with managed care organizations, both to control costs and to improve coordination of services for the mental health or substance abuse systems they manage. In commissioning these various contract studies, SAMHSA was primarily interested in tracking the development of these new types of managed behavioral health care procurements and contracting practices, as well as determining whether there were exemplary commercial behavioral health provisions that could be …

A Unique Sisterhood The African Women's Alliance For Mobilizing Action, Margaret S. Busé Oct 1999

A Unique Sisterhood The African Women's Alliance For Mobilizing Action, Margaret S. Busé

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Originally formed in 1997 as an advocate for African women's education. The African Women's Alliance for Mobilizing Action (AWAMA) quickly undertook the cause to support landmine victims and landmine removal. Working in the province of Zambezia in central Mozambique, Thelma Venichand, director of AWAMA, has no shortage of volunteers, and victims requiring assistance and integration. But, what AWAMA lacks is funding. Currently, their landmine-assistance programs and other support services are on hold till funding and financial aid for their project is received. They are hoping an organization and/or donor will step forward to coordinate efforts with them.

Critical Teacher Thinking And Imaginations: Uncovering Two Vocabulary Strategies To Increase Comprehension, Elaine Roberts Oct 1999

Critical Teacher Thinking And Imaginations: Uncovering Two Vocabulary Strategies To Increase Comprehension, Elaine Roberts

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Dedicated teachers who were taking a university course for reading assessment and diagnosis candidly discussed students' problems with vocabulary words that impede successful reading comprehension. Their viewpoints about ways to help students learn to use vocabulary strategies effectively led to the development of two vocabulary strategies that were based on cognitive and personality styles. The interactive process of developing the strategies pushed the teachers' imaginations and created a challenge for the teachers and their college professor.

Unconscious Bias And Self-Critical Analysis: The Case For A Qualified Evidentiary Equal Employment Opportunity Privilege, Deana A. Pollard Oct 1999

Unconscious Bias And Self-Critical Analysis: The Case For A Qualified Evidentiary Equal Employment Opportunity Privilege, Deana A. Pollard

Washington Law Review

Recent breakthroughs in social psychology have resulted in the ability to measure unconscious bias scientifically. Studies indicate that prejudiced responses are largely unconscious, the result of normal cognitive processing and stereotypical associations of which the prejudiced subject may be completely unaware. The studies also indicate that a subject's awareness of the discrepancy between her conscious, egalitarian value system and her unconscious prejudice is a critical step towards the convergence of her cognitive functioning and her egalitarian viewpoints. Antidiscrimination legislation requires a showing of intent to discriminate to obtain relief in all but a small percent of circumstances. The result is …

The focus of this political-historical case study is based on the leadership style of Vaclav Havel, the current president of the Czech Republic. The premise of this case study has two parts. The first part identifies the leadership characteristics and qualities demonstrated by Vaclav Havel. Part two consists of evaluating Havel's leadership style with contemporary theories of leadership.

This study will show that Havel exhibits a transformational leadership style demonstrated by …

The Significance Of Emotional Intelligence In The Life Of Jimmy Carter, Susan M. James Oct 1999

The Significance Of Emotional Intelligence In The Life Of Jimmy Carter, Susan M. James

Theses and Graduate Projects

According to recent studies, the most important predictor of success is not knowledge or technical aptitude. Rather, "Emotional Intelligence", a concept developed by author and former Harvard professor Daniel Goleman in the 1990s, is the foundation for success. Goleman describes emotional intelligence as the ability to monitor one's own feelings and the feelings of others, and to use this information to guide actions and decisions.

This paper examines the theory of emotional intelligence and its significance in the life of Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States. Known as the most ineffectual president of his time, he has …

Malcolm X And Symbolic Convergence Theory, Jill L. Pittelkow Oct 1999

Malcolm X And Symbolic Convergence Theory, Jill L. Pittelkow

Theses and Graduate Projects

The focus of this paper will be the application of symbolic convergence theory to the leadership attributes of Malcolm X.

Symbolic Convergence Theory focuses on determining and identifying symbols in diverse communities and showing how the meanings for these symbols intersect to create shared results.

In the case of Malcolm X, several ideas which initially sounded radical and frightening to many white people became more solid and reasonable when presented by themes consonant with mainstream American culture.

By focusing on specific examples used by Malcolm X to present his ideas to diverse cultures, I hope to emphasize the importance of …
