Creative Process Is Profoundly Altered By Changes In Technology, Bruce Hieronymus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Individuals throughout time have had a desire to reach beyond their surrounding intellectual and physical environment and explore new territories. Throughout their lives they have continually acquired knowledge. Technology is the application of this knowledge to solve problems. As the knowledge base of humankind has grown at an exponential rate, the presence of technology has also grown. Today technology has surpassed controls and is moving at a rampant rate of speed permitting the introduction of new levels of knowledge in all different layers of society. This, however, permits the creation and expression of new thoughts without the acquisition of previously …

Comparison Of The Teaching Styles Of Full-Time And Part-Time Community College Faculty, Cynthia Smyth Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The purpose of this study was to compare the teaching styles of full-time and part-time community college faculty. The Principles of Adult Learning Scale (PALS) and a modification of the PALS for students were used to measure teaching style. The PALS identifies the extent to which an instructor prefers a learner-centered or a teacher-centered style. The sample was comprised of 31 full-time and 42 part-time randomly selected faculty from seven Florida community colleges and 925 students. Six hypotheses were tested. The findings are summarized here: (1) There was a significant difference between full-time and part-time faculty in teaching style as …

Cultural And Social Perspective On Black Greek-Letter Organization Membership: Perceptions Of Power And Influence Through Affiliation, Dwan Vine Malone Jan 1999

Cultural And Social Perspective On Black Greek-Letter Organization Membership: Perceptions Of Power And Influence Through Affiliation, Dwan Vine Malone

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

For nearly a century, historically black Greek-letter organizations have contributed to the educational, social, political and cultural experience of African-Americans. Consequently, these organizations composed of more than one million educated blacks have developed a unique subculture within the black community. This research investigates "black Greek" culture, its social impact, the influence of its members, and member and non-member perceptions of the black Greek experience. Ethnographic interviews and a questionnaire reveal that: (1) Members and non-members show significant familiarity with black Greek culture and believe that the culture is meaningful to African-American culture overall, and that (2) Members and non-members believe …

Cultural Suicides, Island Retreats, And Diasporic Revelations: A Socio-Historical Approach To Paule Marshall's "Praisesong For The Widow" And Toni Morrison's "Tar Baby", Deonne Nicole Minto Jan 1999

Cultural Suicides, Island Retreats, And Diasporic Revelations: A Socio-Historical Approach To Paule Marshall's "Praisesong For The Widow" And Toni Morrison's "Tar Baby", Deonne Nicole Minto

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

As reflected in Paule Marshall's Praisesong for the Widow and Toni Morrison's Tar Baby, many black characters in literature with a Caribbean setting inhabit a realm of stasis. They negotiate two worlds---a white world with hierarchies of power and success and selective acceptance, and a black world, usually with restricted power. Caught between these two worlds, the exiled slowly begin to lose their sense of roots and to embrace cultural suicide. Some flee to the Caribbean, where they may regain what is lost. This paradise, with all its historical markers of the African diaspora, ultimately forces these characters either to …

Directive Use In Primary Caregiver-Toddler Dyads: A Comparison Of No Risk And At-Risk Children, Andrea Margaret Babkie Jan 1999

Directive Use In Primary Caregiver-Toddler Dyads: A Comparison Of No Risk And At-Risk Children, Andrea Margaret Babkie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The development of child language within the framework of the family has received increased interest in the past decade. One recent premise is that the use of specific types of language by adults in parent-child dyads affects development. These types of adult language, labeled as directives , are verbal behaviors that communicate to the child that he or she should do, say, or attend to something, and are considered to be related to episodes of joint attention. Posited by this model is that episodes of joint attention lead to greater language development. One type of directive, follow-in, is hypothesized to …

Effects Of Cocaine Pre-Exposure And Maternal Deprivation In The Self-Administration Of Cocaine And Amphetamine In Neonatal Rats, Giovanna Marisol Ungaro

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The effects of cocaine exposure and maternal deprivation on subsequent voluntary ingestion of cocaine and amphetamine was investigated in 7-day-old rat pups in order to further our understanding on the development of drug addiction. Maternally deprived and non-deprived pups were pre-exposed to a cocaine solution masked with 5% orange Tang solution. Four hours later, experimental pups were tested for subsequent cocaine self-administration (SA) (Exp. 1) or amphetamine SA, (Exp. 2), following a second deprivation period. Control pups were not deprived during this interval. Pups in both experiments were assessed for dose self-administered and for general activity. Results indicate that cocaine …

Effects Of Prenatal Exposure To Cocaine On Memory For Sex-Typed Event Sequences By Preschool Children, Niveen Iskandar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Cocaine use during pregnancy has been associated with neurobehavioral and cognitive difficulties in infants and toddlers. The present study used an elicited imitation procedure to investigate memory for sex-typed event sequences in preschool children. Measures of immediate and delayed recall was assessed in three groups of children: drug-exposed, at-risk, and not-at-risk. Results indicated that (1) drug-exposed males showed no evidence of demasculinization and/or feminization, (2) drug-exposed children, in general, did not recall a fewer number of different target acts or fewer actions in the correct order than the at-risk or not-at-risk children, and (3) drug-exposed and at-risk children exhibited a …

Effect Of Sea Surface Motion On Underwater Communication Systems, Guenael Thomas Strutt Jan 1999

Effect Of Sea Surface Motion On Underwater Communication Systems, Guenael Thomas Strutt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Underwater acoustic communications are significantly affected by time-varying multipath. Time-delays induced by multiple reactors on boundaries can be compensated for through equalization, and good transmission can be achieved. However, soundwaves reflected from moving scatterers on the sea surface undergo slight variations in frequency that significantly degrade the performance of communication devices. Ocean data was collected to evaluate the amount of Doppler-spread induced by wind-driven surface waves. A model for the shallow water acoustic channel is discussed and implemented using a simplified approach to the gaussian-beam ray-tracing algorithm. This leads to the definition of the spreading function, a convenient tool to …

Efficient Preparation Of Beta-Mercaptopyruvic Acid, A Putative Intermediate In Ecteinascidin Biosynthesis, Hafusat Abosede Fawehinmi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The ecteinascidins are a family of marine derived alkaloids with potent antitumor activity. Ecteinascidins 743 and 729 are the prime targets due to their superior antitumor activity. beta-Mercaptopyruvic acid is a proposed intermediate in the biosynthesis of ecteinascidins 743/729. A novel synthesis of beta-mercaptopyruvic acid using an enzymatic system was achieved. This was accomplished by trapping the equilibrium between beta-mercaptopyruvic acid and 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-dithiane-2,5-dicarboxylate using oxidative deamination of cysteine by amino acid oxidase.

Ethnicity And Immunization Compliance, Carol Lee Spitznagle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This study examined the relationship between ethnicity and parents' compliance with immunizations of their children. Recent studies have shown that compliance rates for immunizations of children who were two years of age were below the standards set by the American Academy of Pediatrics due to both health system barriers and family/child barriers. A survey of pediatric patients was conducted utilizing a convenience sample of 66 parents of children between the ages of twenty and twenty-eight months. The subjects were interviewed to determine factors affecting immunization compliance, including cultural factors consistent with the theoretical framework of Madeline Leininger. The statistical analysis …

During May 1999, an evaluation on the Agriculture Western Australia (AGWEST) Revegetation Monitoring Activity was undertaken. The evaluation was designed to track how the Land Conservation District Committees (LCDCs) in the Peel Harvey Catchment utilised the AGWEST Revegetation Monitoring Activity, and to determine if AGWEST's objectives of the project were being met It also gave the community a chance to provide feedback on their experiences with the Monitoring Activity, and suggest future changes

The survey concluded that the AGWEST Revegetation Monitoring Activity was used by LCDCs as a valuable tool for recording, monitoring and planning landcare projects. However, the process …

In-Situ Measurement Of Denitrification In The Elk Valley Aquifer, Allen Schlag Jan 1999

In-Situ Measurement Of Denitrification In The Elk Valley Aquifer, Allen Schlag

Theses and Dissertations

Groundwater serves more than half of North Dakota's population as a drinking water source. Nitrate (NO₃¯) is a common groundwater contaminant associated with fertilizers, septic systems and livestock waste in shallow unconfined aquifers. As a suspected carcinogen and cause of potentially lethal methemoglobinemia in infants, the natural attenuation of NO₃¯ by denitrification can be an important process in keeping groundwater as a reliable source of clean drinking water for North Dakota. Organic carbon is often considered the most important electron donor for the chemical reduction of NO₃¯ into harmless nitrogen gas. However, several studies have shown that inorganic electron donors …

Tricky Magic: Blacks As Immigrants And The Paradox Of Foreignness, Lolita K. Buckner Inniss Jan 1999

Tricky Magic: Blacks As Immigrants And The Paradox Of Foreignness, Lolita K. Buckner Inniss

Since the beginning of the nation, white Americans have suffered from a deep inner uncertainty as to who they really are. One of the ways that has been used to simplify the answer has been to seize upon the presence of black Americans and use them as a marker, a symbol of limits, a metaphor for the "outsider." Many whites could look at the social position of blacks and feel that color formed an easy and reliable gauge for determining to what extent one was or was not American. Perhaps that is why one of the first epithets that many …

Exclusive production of ρ0 and J/ψ mesons in e+p collisions has been studied with the ZEUS detector in the kinematic range 0.25 < Q2 < 50 GeV2, 20 < W < 167 GeV for the ρ0 data and 2 < Q2 < 40 GeV2, 50 < W < 150 GeV for the J/ψ data. Cross sections for exclusive ρ0 and J/ψ production have been measured as a function of Q2, W and t. The spin-density matrix elements r0400, r11-1i and Re r510 have been determined for exclusive ρ0 production as well as r0400 and r041-1 for exclusive J/ψ production. The results are discussed in the context of theoretical models invoking soft and hard phenomena.

Inclusive photoproduction of D*± mesons has been measured for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies in the range 130 < W < 28OGeV and photon virtuality Q2 < IGeV2. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 37 pb-1. Total and differential cross sections as functions of the D* transverse momentum and pseudorapidity are presented in restricted kinematical regions and the data are compared with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculations using the "massive charm" and "massless charm" schemes. The measured cross sections are generally above the NLO calculations, in particular in the forward (proton) direction. The large data sample also allows the study of dijet production associated with charm. A significant resolved as well as a direct photon component contribute to the cross section. Leading order QCD Monte Carlo calculations indicate that the resolved contribution arises from a significant charm component in the photon. A massive charm NLO parton level calculation yields lower cross sections compared to the measured results in a kinematic region where the resolved photon contribution is significant.

The DIS diffractive cross section, dσdiffγ*p→XN/dMx, has been measured in the mass range Mx < 15 GeV for γ*p c.m. energies 60 < W < 200 GeV and photon virtualities Q2 = 7 to 140 GeV2. For fixed Q2 and Mx, the diffractive cross section rises rapidly with W, dσdiffγ*p→X N (Mx, W, Q2)/dMx ∝ Wadiff with adiff = 0.507 ± 0.034 (stat) +0.155-0.046 (syst) corresponding to a t-averaged pomeron trajectory of ̄αℙ = 1.127 ± 0.009 (stat) +0.039-0.012 (syst) which is larger than ̄αℙ observed in hadron-hadron scattering. The W dependence of the diffractive cross section is found to be the same as that of the total cross section for scattering of virtual photons on protons. The data are consistent with the assumption that the diffractive structure function FD(3)2 factorizes according to cursive greek chiℙFD(3)2(cursive greek chiℙ, β, Q2) = (cursive greek chi0//cursive greek chiℙ)nFD(2)2(β, Q2). They are also consistent with QCD based models which incorporate factorization breaking. The rise of cursive greek chiℙFD(3)2 with decreasing cursive greek chiℙ and the weak dependence of FD(2)2 on Q2 suggest a substantial contribution from partonic interactions.

The e+p neutral-current deep inelastic scattering differential cross-sections dσ/dQ2, for Q2 > 400 GeV2, dσ/dx and dσ/dy, for Q2 > 400, 2500 and 10000 GeV2, have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The data sample of 47.7 pb-1 was collected at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV. The cross-section, dσ/dQ2, falls by six orders of magnitude between Q2 = 400 and 40000 GeV2. The predictions of the Standard Model are in very good agreement with the data. Complementing the observations of time-like Z° contributions to fermion-antifermion annihilation, the data provide direct evidence for the presence of Z° exchange in the …

Charged particle production in neutral current deep inelastic scattering (DIS) has been studied using the ZEUS detector. The evolution of the mean multiplicities, scaled momenta and transverse momenta in Q2 and cursive Greek chi for 10 < Q2 < 5120 GeV2 and cursive Greek chi > 6 × 10-4 has been investigated in the current and target fragmentation regions of the Breit frame. Distributions in the target region, using HERA data for the first time, are compared to distributions in the current region. Predictions based on MLLA and LPHD are inconsistent with the data.

Plea Bargaining And The Criminal Defendant's Obligation To Plead Guilty, Gerard V. Bradley Jan 1999

Plea Bargaining And The Criminal Defendant's Obligation To Plead Guilty, Gerard V. Bradley

Journal Articles

One criticism of plea bargaining holds that: "So long as defendants routinely expect to receive some form of sentencing consideration in exchange for an admission of guilt, the essence of a system of bargain justice is present."

Taken as a criticism ― that "bargain justice" is defective justice and that the "routine" upon which it depends should be significantly reduced, or eliminated ― this view is quite mistaken. On the assumption (which I believe to be true, but for which I do not argue here) that a large majority of the criminally accused are in reality guilty, many ― and …

Physical And Technical Bases Of Using Ferromagnetic Resonance In Hexagonal Ferrites For Electromagnetic Compatibility Problems, Marina Koledintseva, Alexander A. Kitaytsev

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Frequency-selective measurement of microwave signal parameters based on application of gyromagnetic converters has proven advantageous for the research of microwave radiation over a wide spectrum (several octaves) in multisignal regime in microwave path and for the solution of a number of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) problems. The measurement frequency band can be enlarged to millimeter-waves with application of monocrystal hexagonal ferrite resonators (HFR) having high internal magnetic fields. Millimeter-wave field interactions with the HFR having alternating resonance frequency are analyzed. This is useful for millimeter-wave signal modulation and demodulation. The analysis is based on the solution of magnetization vector motion equation …

This paper investigates integrating power engineering material over the breadth of an electrical engineering curriculum. Electrical engineering curricula have a large number of required courses and many subareas for students to study. By introducing power concepts in a variety of courses, students may be motivated to take additional courses in the power area and are better prepared for the diverse background which will be required of them as practising power engineers. The important interrelationships between subareas of electrical engineering are better understood by students when cross discipline applications are discussed. This paper describes the introduction of power concepts and applications …
