A Transiting "51 Peg-Like" Planet, Gregory W. Henry, Geoffrey W. Marcy, R. Paul Butler, Steve Vogt

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

Doppler measurements from Keck exhibit a sinusoidal periodicity in the velocities of the G0 dwarf HD 209458, having a semiamplitude of 81 m s-1 and a period of 3.5239 days, which is indicative of a "51 Peg-like" planet with a minimum mass (M sin i) of 0.62 MJup and a semimajor axis of 0.046 AU. Follow-up photometry reveals a drop of 0.017 mag at the predicted time (within the errors) of transit by the companion based on the velocities. This is the first extrasolar planet observed to transit its star. The radius of the planet derived …

Electrical Resistivity Of A Thin Metallic Film, Horacio E. Camblong Dec 1999

Electrical Resistivity Of A Thin Metallic Film, Horacio E. Camblong

Physics and Astronomy

The electrical resistivity of a pure sample of a thin metallic film is found to depend on the boundary conditions. This conclusion is supported by a free-electron model calculation and confirmed by an ab initio relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker computation. The low-temperature resistivity is found to be zero for a free-standing film (reflecting boundary conditions) but nonzero when the film is sandwiched between two semi-infinite samples of the same material (outgoing boundary conditions). In the latter case, this resistivity scales inversely with the number of monolayers and is due to the background diffusive scattering by a finite lattice.

Motion In Limine To Exclude Specific Items Of Physical Evidence, William D. Mason, A. Steven Dever, Dean Boland

1995-2002 Court Filings

The State of Ohio moves to exclude the bloodstained wood chip and the bloodstain on the murder room wardrobe door, arguing that these pieces of physical evidence cannot be authenticated and should not be admitted during trial. Specifically, it argues that Cynthia Cooper will not be appearing at trial, leaving the trier of fact deprived of information concerning her involvement in the uncovering of the evidence.

Breeding Bird Census On Four Shelterwood-Cut Stands In Buckingham County, Virginia, Sally Ann Statham Dec 1999

Breeding Bird Census On Four Shelterwood-Cut Stands In Buckingham County, Virginia, Sally Ann Statham

Theses & Honors Papers

The Breeding Bird Census (BBC) technique was used to study breeding bird populations on two paired shelter wood-cut oak stands in Buckingham County, Virginia. The four plots are part of a study to determine oak regeneration following controlled burns in the Virginia piedmont. There is an interest in determining how shelter wood-cut plots affect the breeding birds of Virginia. A total of twenty-seven bird species established and defended territories among the four plots. Ten bird species defended territories on all four plots. All of these species were birds characteristic of forest habitats.

Coupling Of Spin Waves With Charge- And Spin Density Excitations In Spin-Polarized Quantum Wells, D C. Marinescu, J J. Quinn Dec 1999

Coupling Of Spin Waves With Charge- And Spin Density Excitations In Spin-Polarized Quantum Wells, D C. Marinescu, J J. Quinn

Publications

The coupling of spin waves with charge- and spin-density waves is shown to be induced by a spin-dependent interaction in a quantum well, which is spin polarized by a dc magnetic field at an angle ␪ to the symmetry axis. The mixing of the plasmonic and magnonic modes, which occurs for both intra- and intersubband transitions, depends on the coupling constant of the spin-spin interaction, the tilt angle ␪, and the initial spin polarization ␨. ͓S0163-1829͑99͒08247-8͔

Motion In Limine To Exclude Expert Testimony Of Emanuel Tanay, William D. Mason, A. Steven Dever, Dean Boland Dec 1999

Motion In Limine To Exclude Expert Testimony Of Emanuel Tanay, William D. Mason, A. Steven Dever, Dean Boland

1995-2002 Court Filings

Emanuel Tanay was a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Wayne State University who offered an opinion regarding the crime scene investigation: he supported the theory that Richard Eberling was Marilyn's killer. The State argues that the Professor’s methodology is not based on a reliable foundation and therefore does not meet the Daubert standard of admissibility.

Preserving Open Lands: Local Zoning And Financing Authority Work Together, John R. Nolon Dec 1999

Preserving Open Lands: Local Zoning And Financing Authority Work Together, John R. Nolon

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

State governments vest great authority in local governments to decide how and where private development shall occur, and in the alternative, where to preserve open land. The New York state legislature recognizes the importance of protecting open lands, and as such, has created several laws to facilitate local municipal action. Several methods exist that municipal government may use to accomplish this goal and this article provides several examples. For instance, the New York Court of Appeals, in the case of Bonnie Briar Syndicate, Inc. v. Town of Mamaroneck, held that a local zoning ordinance, which rezoned a large area for …

The authors examined the impact of smoking status on the relation between body mass index (weight (kg)/height (m)2) and mortality across a group of 15 diverse observational studies. The studies included a heterogeneous sample of national samples, cohort studies with mortality follow-up, and clinical trials. Consideration of the data according to natural strata resulted in the formation of 42 analytic cohorts. The authors examined survival through the end of follow-up for each study, as influenced by body mass index, age, and current smoking status at baseline, using a proportional hazards model to describe the relation between body mass index and …

Near-Band-Gap Cupt-Order-Induced Birefringence In Al0.48Ga0.52Inp2, Mathias Schubert, Tino Hofmann, Bernd Rheinlander, Ines Pietzonka, Torsten Sass, Volker Gottschalch, John A. Woollam

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

The order-induced birefringence in the near-band-gap spectral range (0.75 to 2.5 eV), and its dependence on the degree of ordering η is reported for Al0.48Ga0.52InP2. Transmission and reflection generalized variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry, dark-field spectroscopy, and cross-polarized reflectance difference spectroscopy (CRDS) are used to determine precisely the room-temperature dielectric functions for polarization parallel and perpendicular to the ordering direction of a series of spontaneously CuPt-ordered samples grown by metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy. The CRDS technique is introduced as an approach to sense extremely weak anisotropy at oblique angles of incidence. The observed order birefringence is …

A Patching Model For Surface Tension Of Spherical Droplet And Tolman Length. Ii, T.V. Bykov, Xiao Cheng Zeng Dec 1999

A Patching Model For Surface Tension Of Spherical Droplet And Tolman Length. Ii, T.V. Bykov, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

In the framework of density functional theory (DFT), two patching models for the density profile of spherical liquid droplet are developed. The patching is based on analytical expressions of the asymptote of the density profiles. The first model leads to analytic expressions of the Tolman length and the effective rigidity constant, from which the temperature dependence of the Tolman length and effective rigidity constant can be determined. The second model is developed particularly for small spherical droplets, from which the dependence of chemical potential and the surface tension of the droplet on the radius are obtained. The results are compared …

New Approach To Estimating Bull Fertility, R. L. Ax, M. E. Bellin, H. M. Zhang, H. E. Hawkins

Range Beef Cow Symposium

Breeding soundness evaluations (BSE) are conducted to qualify bulls as potential satisfactory breeders. Guidelines for acceptable measures of scrotal circumference, sperm concentration, sperm motility, and the frequency of sperm with morphological abnormalities are compiled and published by the American Society for Theriogenology (Chenoweth et al., 1992). Unfortunately, according to statistics available from USDA, only 40% of eligible bulls are subjected to a BSE. In the real world, bulls with identical outcomes in terms of physical quality of semen will still vary in actual fertility whether used for natural mating or artificial insemination (A.I).

Going Home To The Family Ranch, Sara F. Hebbert Dec 1999

Going Home To The Family Ranch, Sara F. Hebbert

Range Beef Cow Symposium

Going home to the family ranch is a multi-faceted decision to be made following careful analysis of the whole picture. It is important to identify all the players, choose the right timing, define individual roles, and measure what is most valuable. Combined with these factors is the need to establish partnerships with unlikely partners. The plague of urban sprawl threatening every ag enterprise in the nation makes it continually important that we in the beef industry establish a positive relationship with those not associated with ag. The information that follows is a combination of personal history and observation.

The value of any product is determined by a customer's willingness to pay for that product, which is determined by that customer's wants and needs. The value of beef is therefore ultimately determined according to beef customers' desires. There are three basic beef carcass characteristics that affect value.

Imminent Commercialization Of Sexed Bovine Sperm, J. L. Schenk, G. E. Seidel Jr.

Range Beef Cow Symposium

Cattle breeders demand products and services that improve efficiency and maximize profits. Research and development for these products, once done primarily in academic settings, now is occurring more within the private corporate sector who now fund research that was previously funded from public sources. These products often are patented and licensed to individual companies. Product availability is hastened, but sometimes at higher costs. Sex-specific sperm soon will be available to the cattle industry for use in high profile, genetically elite herds. Widespread availability of sex-specific sperm for commercial herds should follow within 2 years.

Lifetime Effects Of Respiratory And Liver Disease On Cattle, Bill Epperson Dec 1999

Lifetime Effects Of Respiratory And Liver Disease On Cattle, Bill Epperson

Range Beef Cow Symposium

In cattle, the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts are the main systems affected with disease. Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) contributes the majority of illness and death loss in the feedlot segment. Historically, 15-45% of feedlot cattle have been affected with BRD, with 1-5% of total cattle placed dying of BRD (Kelly 1986). Respiratory disease, alone, accounts for 44.1% of deaths in beef feedlot cattle (Vogel 1994). Apart from death loss, the Texas Ranch to Rail Program has suggested that clinical disease (most of which is BRD), even if treated successfully, results in treatment cost ($37.90/affected), decreased average daily gain (0.21 lb/d, …
