Electronic Eavesdropping: A Professional Mailing List As A Setting For Ethnographic Research, Katherine M. Clegg Jan 1999

Electronic Eavesdropping: A Professional Mailing List As A Setting For Ethnographic Research, Katherine M. Clegg

Iowa Journal of Communication

This paper outlines the issues faced when integrating "virtual participant observation" on an occupational mailing list, into an ethnographic study of changes to British family practice. Online interaction is becoming increasingly important to our daily lives, yet social research has tended to focus on "creative" or "imaginative" interaction on the Internet, in neglect of what could be seen as "the mundane." Incorporating the new social setting of an occupational mailing list into the ethnographic study (and the novel data emerging from it into the analysis) has presented several challenges. Ethical issues such as whether the Internet is a private or …

The Virtual Pet Ate My Homework, Mark D. Jones Jan 1999

The Virtual Pet Ate My Homework, Mark D. Jones

Iowa Journal of Communication

The Virtual Pet Are My Homework contains an examination of the social and psychological relationships developed by early-adolescent and pre-adolescent children around the miniature electronic devices known as tomagotchis, or virtual pets. Two sets of children, one older and one younger, were interviewed in focus group settings. The interview protocol made use of prior research on social-psychological relationships with television and computers, and employed the results of these studies as sensitizing concepts. Though the number of subjects interviewed was small, it was observed that the children cognitively differentiated between the devices and the pets represented on the device screen. …

Teachers and instructors at various levels of educational institutions are constantly on the alert for effective methods to teach management of conflict. Understanding the different conflict styles of oneself and others can better prepare oneself for the actual problem-solving stage of negotiation. The purpose of this article is to present a strategy for teaching negotiation and conflict styles. The approach presented here was designed for a college level undergraduate course, however, teachers in high schools or middle schools may make adaptations to meet their specific needs and age group.

Enhancement Of Speech Evaluation Through Digitization, John V. Modaff, Daniel P. Modaff, Lawrence M. Modaff Jan 1999

Enhancement Of Speech Evaluation Through Digitization, John V. Modaff, Daniel P. Modaff, Lawrence M. Modaff

Iowa Journal of Communication

For a communication instructor, evaluating speech performance can be a difficult exercise given the temporal nature of the performance. With the advent of available and cost efficient video recording technology, though, instructors have been able to replay the performance to increase the number of performance cues to which they can attend and hence the validity of the evaluation. Some evaluators choose not to employ this technology, due to the cumbersome nature of the record/search/play processes and the ensuing problem of coordinating the tape with the written evaluation. In this paper, we offer a solution to these problems using multimedia computer …

Part III analyzes the bifurcated approval process for an L visa. This section surveys the requirements for the L visa and discusses why Congress believed these requirements were …

Leveling The Playing Field For Religious "Liberty" In Russia:, Afina Lekhel Jan 1999

Leveling The Playing Field For Religious "Liberty" In Russia:, Afina Lekhel

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The purpose of this Note is to present a more comprehensive framework for analyzing the status of religious human rights in Russia after the enactment of the new law. Following the insights of an eminent scholar on law and religion, Prof. Harold J. Berman, the topic may be evaluated with a view to positive law (Zakon), moral theory (Pravo), and Russian historical experiences. Generally, positive law refers to domestic legal norms. Moral theory also stems primarily from domestic supra-legal sources, but it may connote global human rights principles where a state subscribes to monism, as Russia currently does. Historical contingencies …

The Rise Of The International Trust, Jeffrey A. Schoenblum Jan 1999

The Rise Of The International Trust, Jeffrey A. Schoenblum

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

With considerable acuity, Carlyn S. McCaffrey and Elyse G.Kirschner explore the maze created by the new Code and treasury regulation provisions. In addition to affording a fascinating roadmap through the maze, their article, Learning to Live with the New Foreign Nongrantor Trust Rules, demonstrates the difficulty of addressing legislatively the multitude of trust arrangements that can be devised in the struggle between grantors worldwide and the U.S. tax authorities. The article also exposes the inevitable generation of unintended consequences, including new loopholes, that are a product of such legislation.

In a second tax article, Respect for "Form" as "Substance" in …

Significant Trends In The Trust Law Of The United States, Edward C. Halbach, Jr. Jan 1999

Significant Trends In The Trust Law Of The United States, Edward C. Halbach, Jr.

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

In examining significant trends in American trust law, several observations are worth mentioning at the outset. First, trust law in the United States is primarily a matter of state law; thus, the trends discussed below may appear in some states but not in others. Second, procedural merger of law and equity in this country has been substantially accomplished in nearly all states, but this should not be understood as eliminating the importance of equitable doctrine and remedies. Third, without abandoning the basic definition of a trust as a fiduciary relationship, there appear to be subtle but practically significant departures from …

The Islamic Family Endowment (Waqf), David S. Powers Jan 1999

The Islamic Family Endowment (Waqf), David S. Powers

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

As part of the larger Islamic inheritance system, endowment law accorded Muslim proprietors a legal means to circumvent the effects of the Islamic inheritance rules by allocating usufruct rights to specified people in specified amounts and to regulate the transmission of those rights from one generation of beneficiaries to the next. Over time, the institution appears to have contributed to the physical integrity of both urban and rural property. Whether or not it also contributed to the economic viability of the local economy is a subject that deserves further investigation." At the same time, the transformation of significant segments of …

The Role Of Artists In Ship Camouflage During World War I, Roy R. Behrens Jan 1999

The Role Of Artists In Ship Camouflage During World War I, Roy R. Behrens

Faculty Work

Experiments in ship camouflage during World War I were necessitated by the inordinate success of German submarines (called "U-boats") in destroying Allied ships. Because it is impossible to make a ship invisible at sea, Norman Wilkinson, Everett L. Warner and other artists devised methods of course distortion in which high-contrast, unrelated shapes were painted on a ship's surface, thereby confusing the periscope view of the submarine gunner.

"Chevron," Cooperative Federalism, And Telecommunications Reform, Philip J. Weiser Jan 1999

"Chevron," Cooperative Federalism, And Telecommunications Reform, Philip J. Weiser

Vanderbilt Law Review

In this Article, Professor Weiser argues that the advent of cooperative federalism statutes, like the Telecommunications Act of 1996, calls for a new conception of federal court review of state agency decisions. In particular, Professor Weiser suggests that federal statutes that invite state agencies to interpret federal law subject only to federal court review should be interpreted as calling for a deferential standard of review. Such a standard, to be sure, would allow cooperative federalism statutes to mean different things in different states. But as Professor Weiser illustrates with reference to the Telecommunications Act, the very nature of cooperative federalism …

Surface Resistance Measurements Of Superconducting Niobium Samples With A Triaxial Cavity, Paul Martin Boccard Jan 1999

Surface Resistance Measurements Of Superconducting Niobium Samples With A Triaxial Cavity, Paul Martin Boccard

Physics Theses & Dissertations

This experimental study has revealed and investigated many of the physical issues that affect accurate measurement of the surface resistance for small samples consisting of superconducting niobium films on copper substrates. It is believed that this work provides the groundwork for future research directed towards solving this important problem. Accurate measurement of surface resistance for such samples is needed to allow the rapid evaluation and optimization of the deposition parameters necessary for manufacturing low-loss superconducting niobium films.

A superconducting niobium triaxial cavity was investigated to determine its suitability for measuring the residual surface resistance of copper samples that were sputter-coated …

Stories Of School : Perspectives Of The Low Literate Adult, Anne Shipway Jan 1999

Stories Of School : Perspectives Of The Low Literate Adult, Anne Shipway

Theses : Honours

This thesis explores the school experiences of low literate adults through their perspective recognising that the 'voice' of the low literate adult is absent from the arena of adult literacy research. Stories are co-constructed by the participant and the researcher with particular emphasis on mai1uaining the voice of the research participant. Through this thesis I argue that the inclusion of the low literate adults perspective is an essential element in gaining a deeper understanding of themes and issues which impact on literacy attainment.

Smoking : An Exploration Of Message Framing And Death Anxiety, Ian James Parker Jan 1999

Smoking : An Exploration Of Message Framing And Death Anxiety, Ian James Parker

Theses : Honours

The focus of this thesis is the replication and extension of research by Tversky and Kahneman (1981) who found that how a message is worded or framed can significantly affect decisional choice. Tversky and Kahneman (1981) demonstrated that a message framed in terms of "lives saved" was favoured over one which read "lives lost" notwithstanding that the net sum of survivors was equal in both instances. The authors referred to the effects of message framing on decision making as Prospect Theory. This thesis studied Tversky and Kahneman's (1981) research applied to the issue of smoking. The preference for a positive …

This datatogging unit was constructed from embedded components and interfaced with a user defined database. Perusal of the details within should provide the reader with a clear understanding of the tasks involved …

To Immunize Or Not To Immunize, That Is The Question! An Investigation Into The Reasons Behind Parents' Decisions In Immunizing Their Children Against Whooping Cough In Western Australia, Eliena Kirov Jan 1999

To Immunize Or Not To Immunize, That Is The Question! An Investigation Into The Reasons Behind Parents' Decisions In Immunizing Their Children Against Whooping Cough In Western Australia, Eliena Kirov

Theses : Honours

Demographic data on the immunization status of Australia indicates that Western Australia has relatively low immunization coverage for whooping cough. Australian quantitative studies have been carried out on parental attitudes in Australia towards immunization, but there has been no analysis of parents' reasons for their decisions. This study identified the key issues that influenced the decisions made by the target group of parents and explored their decision-making in more depth. The data from this study could also be used to supplement the information currently available to health workers. Eight participants with children between the ages of 2 months and 6 …

Evaluating Oral Histories For Restoration Ecology, Margaret Robertson Jan 1999

Evaluating Oral Histories For Restoration Ecology, Margaret Robertson

Theses : Honours

Significant ecological restoration is required in the agricultural regions of south-western Australia. Environmental history, including local knowledge based on long-term observation of the biophysical environment, can help guide this process. Scientists already use local anecdotal information because other information sources are absent or too recent, yet they are often skeptical of its veracity. This study focused on whether environmental oral histories can be evaluated for factual accuracy and their capacity to be useful in the restoration process. Some of the complexities associated with linking environmental histories with restoration ecology, and the role played by oral histories in establishing the link …

What Are The Important Elements Of The Pre-Primary Curriculum? : The Views Of Parents And Teachers, Ann Hyde Jan 1999

What Are The Important Elements Of The Pre-Primary Curriculum? : The Views Of Parents And Teachers, Ann Hyde

Theses : Honours

The delivery of pre-primary education in Western Australia has undergone dramatic and rapid change since its tentative beginnings in 1911. During the 1990's we have seen the most tumultuous period of change with the implementation of the government's Good Start Program. It is timely that we investigate what the primary stakeholders expect from pre-primary programs. Are parents and teachers expecting the same things? Is there harmony between the curriculum of the home and the school? This study addressed these questions. A survey was conducted, involving 150 parents and 60 teachers (30 pre-primary teachers and 30 year one teachers). Schools were …

Theses : Honours

The concept of social capital is investigated in this thesis both in its theoretical and potential social policy environment Pierre Bourdicu 's 'Theory of Practice' provides the theoretical frame within which this concept is investigated. A variety of texts, with a particular focus on Australian publications, provide the basis for further application analysis. This is primarily a textual research therefore data gathering procedures were library based. Being a theoretical analysis of the current status of social capital, as it relates to prospective social policy reform in Australia, this thesis both collates and contributes to a body of knowledge regarding the …

Dancing With Difference, Michael J. Lenney Jan 1999

Dancing With Difference, Michael J. Lenney

Theses : Honours

This is a symbolic interactionist study into behaviours surrounding social interaction. The study has two components, asking how people with able-bodies interact with a young person with a disability, and how does the young person, who is non-verbal, respond to and interpret such interactions? Participants were observed and recorded using a digital camera whilst interacting at a social venue. The able-bodied participants were not aware of the camera at the time of filming, and were approached after the filming to participate in the study. Seven participants were later interviewed and asked to explain what they were aware of as they …

The Perception Of Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Values : Is Value Incongruence Related To Social Distance?, Lauren Jennifer Breen Jan 1999

The Perception Of Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Values : Is Value Incongruence Related To Social Distance?, Lauren Jennifer Breen

Theses : Honours

This review examines prejudicial actions directed towards outgroups as a function of personal values and the perception of the values held by other groups. Prejudice is a result of social and cognitive categorisation. Although it is well learned, prejudice is not inevitable, if individuals attend to and control their prejudicial thoughts. Pleasurable interaction, cooperation, equal status, and making humanitarian values conspicuous serve to reduce intergroup conflict. It was proposed that values motivate approach and avoidance behaviours directed at outgroups, and both belief congruence theory and expectance-value theory arc relevant in explaining such behaviour.

Therapeutic Factors In Small Groups : A Review Of The Literature Since 1985, Nicki Mckenna Jan 1999

Therapeutic Factors In Small Groups : A Review Of The Literature Since 1985, Nicki Mckenna

This article reviews 23 studies post 1985 that measure therapeutic factors. In particular, the current review investigates whether research post 1985 has addressed the specific areas identified by Bloch and Crouch, ( 1985) and Butler and Fuhriman (1983) as needing further investigation. Areas of study under investigation are (i) behavioral evidence for therapeutic factors. (ii) the relationship between therapeutic factors and treatment outcome, (iii) the relationship between therapeutic factors and individual differences, (iv) the association between therapeutic factors conditions of change and techniques. Studies reviewed were categorized into Inpatient and Outpatient settings. Only one study used observational methods, with the …

The Generalisability Of The Stages And Processes Of Change ; The Concurrent Validity Of The Stages And Processes Of Change, Suzanne E. Marko Jan 1999

The Generalisability Of The Stages And Processes Of Change ; The Concurrent Validity Of The Stages And Processes Of Change, Suzanne E. Marko

Theses : Honours

The transtheorctical model of behaviour change is comprised of the stages of change and the processes of change. The stages explain when change occurs, and the processes outline how change occurs. This model has been influential in clinical practice in the areas of tobacco smoking, alcohol use, eating disorders, and exercise behaviour. This review focuses on the previous literature concerned with the transtheorctical model. Although the model is popular and used to tailor interventions, it has not yet been cross-culturally vaildated, or tested comprehensively in the field of illegal drug use. Further research is necessary to examine whether or not …
