Influence Of The Medium Length On High-Order Harmonic Generation, C. Delfin, C. Altucci, F. De Filippo, C. De Lisio, M. B. Gaarde, A. L'Huillier, L. Roos, C. G. Wahlström

Faculty Publications

We study high-order harmonic generation using a 110 fs Ti:sapphire laser loosely focused into a variable-length gas cell filled with neon or argon at 5 mbar pressure. The harmonic intensity is recorded as a function of the medium length, varying between 2 and 21 mm. Several cases are examined, the 17th and the 29th harmonic in argon, and the 29th and 51st harmonic in neon, at the same intensity 4 × 1014 W cm-2. We find that the length which maximizes the harmonic yield varies from 10 mm to more than 20 mm. We discuss the different effects affecting the …

Study On Electrochemical Reduction Properties Of Nitrobenzene, Chu-Na Ma, Wen-Kui Zhang, Hui Huang, Yong-Ping Gan Nov 1999

Study On Electrochemical Reduction Properties Of Nitrobenzene, Chu-Na Ma, Wen-Kui Zhang, Hui Huang, Yong-Ping Gan

Journal of Electrochemistry

The electrochemical reduction characteristics of nitrobenzene was extensively investigated by using the techniques such as quasi-steady-state polarization, cyclic voltammetry, fast linear potential sweep method and chronoamperometry in this paper. The electroanalytic properties of Cu, Cu-Hg and Cu-Ni electrodes were evaluated. Based on the study of the transient steping behaviour of nitrobenzene to PAP, the reduction mechanism was discussed. The results showed that the transition steps existed on the electrochemical reduction of nitrobenzene in acidic solution, the reactant is also absorbed on electrodes surface. The control step in the reduction of nitrobenzene was ascribed to the diffusion of nitrobenzene and its …

Photoelectrochemical Studies On The Tio2 Nanostructured Porous Film Sensitized By Cyanine Dye, Li Zhang, Mai-Zhi Yang, Xue-Bin Qiao, Yan-Zhong Hao, En-Qing Gao, Sheng-Min Cai Nov 1999

Photoelectrochemical Studies On The Tio2 Nanostructured Porous Film Sensitized By Cyanine Dye, Li Zhang, Mai-Zhi Yang, Xue-Bin Qiao, Yan-Zhong Hao, En-Qing Gao, Sheng-Min Cai

Journal of Electrochemistry

The photoelectrochemical behaviors of the TiO2 nanostructured porous film sensitized by cyanine dye were investigated in this paper. The results showed that the excitaed state level matched the conduction band edge of TiO2 nanoparticle. Therefore the sensitization of the dye can increase the photocurrent intensity of the TiO2 nanostructured electrode obviously and results in a red-shift of optical absorption from the ultra-violet region to the visible. As a result, the light-to-electricity conversion efficiency was improved evidently, the maximum value of IPCE has reached 12.1%.

Prparation Of Nanocrystaline Tio2(Anatase) With High Thermal And Textural Sability By Electrochemical Method, Dao-Bao Chu, Xing-Fu Zhou, Chang-Jian Lin, Jian-Guang Tang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Titanium alkoxides were prepared by anodic dissolution of metallic titanium in absolute ethanol in the presence of HN(C2H5)2·HCl (electro-conductive additives). The solution was directly hydrolyzed to prepare nanocrystalline of TiO2 (about 10nm)by a sol-gel process. The precursor gels was calcined at T =450 ℃ and 720 ℃ for 30 min, and nanocrystalline of TiO2 (anatase) with high textural and thermal stability was obtained. FTIR, XRD, TEM were used to characterize the structure of titanium alkoxides and nanocrystalline of TiO2. The characteristics of nanocrystalline of TiO2 was depended on the …

Studies On Methods Of Fuel Cells Electrodes Preparation, Jun Gu, Sheng Sui, Guang-Qiang Li, Zhitong Sui

Journal of Electrochemistry

In fuel cells, the structure of electrodes is an important factor which effect the cell performance. To improve the structure and the performance of electrodes, a new method of providing fuel cell electrodes is proposed in this paper. PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) and ethyne black was ground for about half an hour in a high-speed grinder, then the catalyst was added into the grinder and milled for an hour. This milled catalyst was transferred into a mixer followed by the addition of surface-active agent. After a suspension was formed, it was filtered under vacuum condition. Then a thin uniform filter-cake of the catalyst …

Using The Space-Borne Nasa Scatterometer (Nscat) To Determine The Frozen And Thawed Seasons, Steve Frolking, Kyle Mcdonald, John Kimball, S W. Running, R Zimmermann Nov 1999

Using The Space-Borne Nasa Scatterometer (Nscat) To Determine The Frozen And Thawed Seasons, Steve Frolking, Kyle Mcdonald, John Kimball, S W. Running, R Zimmermann

Earth Sciences

We hypothesize that the strong sensitivity of radar backscatter to surface dielectric properties, and hence to the phase (solid or liquid) of any water near the surface should make space-borne radar observations a powerful tool for large-scale spatial monitoring of the freeze/thaw state of the land surface, and thus ecosystem growing season length. We analyzed the NASA scatterometer (NSCAT) backscatter from September 1996 to June 1997, along with temperature and snow depth observations and ecosystem modeling, for three BOREAS sites in central Canada. Because of its short wavelength (2.14 cm), NSCAT was sensitive to canopy and surface water. NSCAT had …

Net Ecosystem Productivity And Its Uncertainty In A Diverse Boreal Peatland, Jill L. Bubier, Steve Frolking, P Crill, Ernst Linder Nov 1999

Net Ecosystem Productivity And Its Uncertainty In A Diverse Boreal Peatland, Jill L. Bubier, Steve Frolking, P Crill, Ernst Linder

Earth Sciences

Net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of CO2 was measured in four peatlands along plant community, hydrologic, and water chemistry gradients from bog to rich fen in a diverse peatland complex near Thompson, Manitoba, as part of the Boreal Ecosystem-Atmosphere Study (BOREAS). A simple model for estimating growing season net ecosystem productivity (NEP) using continuous measurements of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and peat temperature was constructed with weekly chamber measurements of NEE from May to October 1996. The model explained 79–83% of the variation in NEE across the four sites. Model estimation and parameter uncertainty calculations were performed using nonlinear regression …

New Mammalian Selenocysteine-Containing Proteins Identified With An Algorithm That Searches For Selenocysteine Insertion Sequence Elements, Gregory V. Kryukov, Valentin M. Kryukov, Vadim N. Gladyshev Nov 1999

New Mammalian Selenocysteine-Containing Proteins Identified With An Algorithm That Searches For Selenocysteine Insertion Sequence Elements, Gregory V. Kryukov, Valentin M. Kryukov, Vadim N. Gladyshev

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Mammalian selenium-containing proteins identified thus far contain selenium in the form of a selenocysteine residue encoded by UGA. These proteins lack common amino acid sequence motifs, but 3’-untranslated regions of selenoprotein genes contain a common stem-loop structure, selenocysteine insertion sequence (SECIS) element, that is necessary for decoding UGA as selenocysteine rather than a stop signal. We describe here a computer program, SECISearch, that identifies mammalian selenoprotein genes by recognizing SECIS elements on the basis of their primary and secondary structures and free energy requirements. When SECISearch was applied to search human dbEST, two new mammalian selenoproteins, designated SelT and SelR, …

Dimensional Strategies And The Minimization Problem: Barrier-Avoiding Algorithms, Daniel B. Faken, A. F. Voter, David L. Freeman, J. D. Doll

Chemistry Faculty Publications

In the present paper we examine the role of dimensionality in the minimization problem. Since it has such a powerful influence on the topology of the associated potential energy landscape, we argue that it may prove useful to alter the dimensionality of the space of the original minimization problem. We explore this general idea in the context of finding the minimum energy geometries of Lennard-Jones clusters. We show that it is possible to locate barrier-free, high-dimensional pathways that connect local, three-dimensional cluster minima. The performance of the resulting, “barrier-avoiding minimization” algorithm is examined for clusters containing as many as 55 …
