A Content Analysis Of Information Process Models, Aileen C. Meyer Jan 1999

A Content Analysis Of Information Process Models, Aileen C. Meyer

Graduate Research Papers

This study used content analysis of seven information process models which were published between the years of 1988 and 1997 to determine if these models share certain characteristics among themselves, and with recent educational theories. Findings indicate that the seven information process models do contain characteristics from the learning theories of metacognition, constructivism, and process education.

Gender Differences In The Relationships Among Ses, Family History Of Alcohol Disorders And Alcohol Dependence, Geoffrey M. Curran, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Elizabeth M. Hill, Sharon A. Mudd, Frederic C. Blow, Robert A. Zucker

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Objective: Potential moderator and mediator roles of several measures of socioeconomic status (SES) were investigated for the relationship between a family history of alcoholism( FH) and alcohol dependence symptoms in adulthood. Method: These analyses were performed with a sample of 931 men and 385 women participating in studies at the Alcohol Research Center, University of Michigan. Hierarchical multiple regression equations were used to assess whether SES mediated and moderated relationships between FH and alcohol dependence symptoms. Results: In general, measures of SES (education, occupation, personal and household income) were more important predictors of alcohol dependence symptoms among men, while FH …

Carvm And Naic Actuarial Guidelines 33 & 34, Keith P. Sharp Jan 1999

Carvm And Naic Actuarial Guidelines 33 & 34, Keith P. Sharp

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)

Annuity valuation under the NAIC Standard Valuation Law is determined according to methods different from those methods used for life insurance. The CARVM assumption of efficient policyholder selection is clarified under NAIC Actuarial Guidelines 33 and 34 to allow for non-elective (e.g., death) benefits. In particular, Actuarial Guideline 34 is oriented toward variable annuities and prescribes methods to be used in the presence of a minimum guaranteed death benefit. In this paper these methods are examined and illustrated with examples.

Credibility Calculations Using Analysis Of Variance Computer Routines, Dennis H. Tolley, Michael D. Nielsen, Robert Bachler

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)

In this paper we present a method of calculating Buhlmann-Straub credibility factors using standard statistical techniques developed for the analysis of variance. Emphasis is placed on using readily available statistical packages such as SAS and SPSS. Additionally many other computational tools such as EXCEL can be programmed to make such calculations. An example and some sample SAS programs are provided.

Slavery In The Platte Region, H. Jason Combs Jan 1999

Slavery In The Platte Region, H. Jason Combs

Nebraska Anthropologist

Missouri's bid for statehood reflected the struggle to extend the southern slave culture onto the western frontier of settlement. The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 and the Missouri Compromise set specific geographic boundaries for the extension of slavery, which in turn created distinctive patterns of migration and settlement on the frontier. The Platte Purchase region of northwest Missouri is one of the areas that reflect slavery's influence on settlement. This paper will discuss slave ownership, the need for slavery, and explain the geographic distribution of slaves in the Platte region.

Teen Pregnancy: A Cross-Cultural Phenomenon But A Western Problem?, Tina Brown Jan 1999

Teen Pregnancy: A Cross-Cultural Phenomenon But A Western Problem?, Tina Brown

Nebraska Anthropologist

Teen pregnancy (broadened to "premarital pregnancy" for research purposes) was investigated cross-culturally. Using the electronic Human Relations Area Files and literature review, attitudes toward premarital pregnancy, the incidence of premarital pregnancies, and outcomes of premarital pregnancies were compared in "African" and "Eurasian" social systems (as defined by Goody, 1976). Despite considerahle variance, there were no significant differences in approval or disapproval of premarital sex or pregnancy in African and Eurasian systems. There was no difference in incidence rates of premarital pregnancy in African and Eurasian systems; however. not taking marital status into consideration. developing countries have higher rates of adolescent …

Contamination Nation, Kurt T. Mantonya

Nebraska Anthropologist

The Navajo, like many other North American Native populations have been adversely affected by mining. Termination of tribal status, forced relocation, and exposure to radioactive elements are just a few of the tragedies these people have faced. This paper will take an ethnohistorical approach to mining on Navajo  ands as well as investigates important case law that have been established over the past 100 years.

Whither Cowboy Poetry?, Jim Hoy Jan 1999

Whither Cowboy Poetry?, Jim Hoy

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

As a cultural phenomenon the explosion in popularity of cowboy poetry in the past dozen years has been nothing short of spectacular. Until the first full-scale cowboy poetry gathering at Elko, Nevada, in late January 1985, poetry was arguably the one aspect of cowboy culture that had not been expropriated into American popular culture. Certainly the mental picture of the cowboy himself-big hat, high-heeled boots, silk neckerchief, leather chaps-has long since become an icon that represents the very nation: wear a cowboy hat and you will be taken for an American anywhere in the world. The two essential working skills …

"The Silent Artillery Of Time" Understanding Social Change In The Rural Midwest, Jon Lauck Jan 1999

"The Silent Artillery Of Time" Understanding Social Change In The Rural Midwest, Jon Lauck

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The great historian of republicanism, J. G. A. Pocock, noted that "[f]rom Jefferson to Frederick Jackson Turner and beyond, it was commonplace that sooner or later the frontier would be closed, the land filled, and the corruptions of history-urbanization, finance capital, 'the cross of gold,' 'the military-industrial complex' -would overtake America. Here are the origins of American historical pessimism." The American frontier has long since closed, the agrarian order has long-since passed away, and the pessimism has mushroomed into a "palpable despair and cynicism and violence," "dark signs of the times," according to the philosopher Jean Bethke Elshtain. The disappearance …

Review Of Confessions Of A Maddog: A Romp Through The High-Flying Texas Music And Literary Era Of The Fifties To The Seventies By Jay Dunston Milner, Kent Blaser Jan 1999

Review Of Confessions Of A Maddog: A Romp Through The High-Flying Texas Music And Literary Era Of The Fifties To The Seventies By Jay Dunston Milner, Kent Blaser

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The title Confessions of a Maddog carries a reference that most readers will not recognize: the "Maddogs" were an assortment of Texas writers and musicians, rowdy "good-old-boys" (and a few girls), who in the 1960s created a social circle-Maddogs, Inc.-complete with official membership cards and a slogan. Milner's book is part autobiography, but mostly a memoir/reminiscence of a particular time and group of people. Billie Lee Brammer, Larry L. King, Bud Shrake, Dan Jenkins, Peter Gent, Gary Cartwright, and Milner himself led the somewhat motley crew. Musician Jerry Jeff Walker was a regular participant. More famous individuals, including Willie Nelson, …

Characterization Of The Jembrana Disease Virus Tat Gene And The Cis- And Trans-Regulatory Elements In Its Long Terminal Repeats, Hexin Chen, Graham Wilcox, Gde Kertayadnya, Charles Wood Jan 1999

Characterization Of The Jembrana Disease Virus Tat Gene And The Cis- And Trans-Regulatory Elements In Its Long Terminal Repeats, Hexin Chen, Graham Wilcox, Gde Kertayadnya, Charles Wood

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Jembrana disease virus (JDV) is a newly identified bovine lentivirus that is closely related to the bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV). JDV contains a tat gene, encoded by two exons, which has potent transactivation activity. Cotransfection of the JDV tat expression plasmid with the JDV promoter chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) construct pJDV-U3R resulted in a substantial increase in the level of CAT mRNA transcribed from the JDV long terminal repeat (LTR) and a dramatic increase in the CAT protein level. Deletion analysis of the LTR sequences showed that sequences spanning nucleotides 268 to 153, including the TATA box and the predicted first …

Technology Staff Development: Union Community School District, Korina Carlson Jan 1999

Technology Staff Development: Union Community School District, Korina Carlson

Graduate Research Papers

Staff development is an issue which can make or break the educational impact of technology, especially computers, in our schools (Costello, 1997). Literature suggests that the role of technology in our schools is evolving faster than university students can complete the course of study to become educators (Glennan and Melmed, 1996). A staff who has been given the opportunity to train and implement technology can increase the potential of all learners. It is necessary to provide initial and continuous training and support for educators in school districts that have made technology an integral aspect for the learning experience (McGrath, 1998). …

Biogenic Silica Records From The Bdp93 Drill Site And Adjacent Areas Of The Selenga Delta, Lake Baikal, Siberia, Steven M. Colman, John A. Peck, Josephine Hatton, Eugene B. Karabanov, John W. King Jan 1999

Biogenic Silica Records From The Bdp93 Drill Site And Adjacent Areas Of The Selenga Delta, Lake Baikal, Siberia, Steven M. Colman, John A. Peck, Josephine Hatton, Eugene B. Karabanov, John W. King

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Biogenic silica contents of sediments on the lower Selenga Delta and Buguldeika saddle in Lake Baikal show distinct fluctuations that reflect changes in diatom productivity, and ultimately, climate. The pattern of the upper 50 m of the section, dating from about 334 ka, is similar to that of the marine oxygen isotope record, increasingly so as the younger sediments become progressively finer grained and less locally derived with time. The last two interglaciations are marked by biogenic silica abundances similar to those of the Holocene. The equivalent of marine oxygenisotope stage 3 is distinctly intermediate in character between full glacial …

The Carbon Cycle And Biogeochemical Dynamics In Lake Sediments, Walter E. Dean Jan 1999

The Carbon Cycle And Biogeochemical Dynamics In Lake Sediments, Walter E. Dean

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The concentrations of organic carbon (OC) and CaCO3 in lake sediments are often inversely related. This relation occurs in surface sediments from different locations in the same lake, surface sediments from different lakes, and with depth in Holocene sediments. Where data on accumulation rates are available, the relation holds for organic carbon and CaCO3 accumulation rates as well. An increase of several percent OC is accompanied by a decrease of several tens of percent CaCO3 indicating that the inverse relation is not due to simple dilution of one component by another. It appears from core data that …

Plasmd Bearing A Cdna Copy Of The Genome Of Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus, Chimeric Derivatives Thereof, And Method Of Producing An Infectious Bovine Wral Darrheavirus Using Sad Plasmid, Ruben O. Donis, Ventzislav B. Vassilev

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

A plasmid bearing a cDNA copy of the genome of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), chimeric derivatives of the plasmid and a method of producing an infectious bovine viral diarrhea virus using the plasmid are disclosed. The invention relates to a plasmid DNA molecule that replicates easily in E. coli and contains a sufficient portion of the genome of BVDV, cloned as cDNA, to be a suitable template to produce RNA in vitro which, upon transfection into bovine cells, gives rise to infectious BVDV. The BVDV created by the process of the invention can be engineered for use as a …

The Insignificance Of Statistical Significance Testing, Douglas H. Johnson Jan 1999

The Insignificance Of Statistical Significance Testing, Douglas H. Johnson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Despite their wide use in scientific journals such as The Journal of Wildlife Management, statistical hypothesis tests add very little value to the products of research. Indeed, they frequently confuse the interpretation of data. This paper describes how statistical hypothesis tests are often viewed, and then contrasts that interpretation with the correct one. I discuss the arbitrariness of P-values, conclusions that the null hypothesis is true, power analysis, and distinctions between statistical and biological significance. Statistical hypothesis testing, in which the null hypothesis about the properties of a population is almost always known a priori to be false, is …

Late Quaternary Loess In Northeastern Colorado: Part Ii—Pb Isotopic Evidence For The Variability Of Loess Sources, John N. Aleinikoff, Daniel R. Muhs, Rebecca R. Sauer, C. Mark Fanning Jan 1999

Late Quaternary Loess In Northeastern Colorado: Part Ii—Pb Isotopic Evidence For The Variability Of Loess Sources, John N. Aleinikoff, Daniel R. Muhs, Rebecca R. Sauer, C. Mark Fanning

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A new application of the Pb isotopic tracer technique has been used to determine the relative importance of different silt sources for late Wisconsin loess in the central Great Plains of eastern Colorado. Samples of the Peoria Loess collected throughout the study area contain K-feldspar derived from two isotopically and genetically distinct sources: (1) glaciogenic material from Early and Middle Proterozoic crystalline rocks of the Colorado province, and (2) volcaniclastic material from the Tertiary White River Group exposed on the northern Great Plains. Pb isotopic compositions of K-feldspar in loess from two dated vertical sections (at Beecher Island and Last …

Predation Of Artificial Ground Nests On White-Tailed Prairie Dog Colonies, Bruce W. Baker, Thomas R. Stanley, James A. Sedgwick Jan 1999

Predation Of Artificial Ground Nests On White-Tailed Prairie Dog Colonies, Bruce W. Baker, Thomas R. Stanley, James A. Sedgwick

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Prairie dog (Cynomys spp.) colonies are unique to prairie and shrub-steppe landscapes. However, widespread eradication, habitat loss, and sylvatic plague (Yersinia pestis) have reduced their numbers by 98% since historical times. Birds associated with prairie dogs also are declining. Potential nest predators, such as coyotes (Canis latrans), swift foxes (Vulpes velox), and badgers (Taxidea taxus), may be attracted to colonies where a high concentration of prairie dogs serve as available prey. Increased abundance of small mammals, including prairie dogs, also may increase the risk of predation for birds nesting on colonies. …

Structure, Biodiversity, And Historical Biogeography Of Nematode Faunas In Holarctic Ruminants: Morphological And Molecular Diagnoses For Teladorsagia Boreoarticus N. Sp. (Nemadota: Ostertagiinae), Dimorphic Cryptic Species In Muskoxen (Ovibos Moschatus), Eric P. Hoberg, Kirsten J. Monsen, Susan Kutz, Michael S. Blouin

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Discovery of the ostertagiine nematode Teladorsagia boreoarcticus n. sp. in muskoxen, Ovibos moschatus, from the central Canadian Arctic highlights the paucity of knowledge about the genealogical and numerical diversity of nematode faunas characteristic of artiodactyls at high latitudes across the Holarctic. Teladorsagia boreoarcticus is a dimorphic cryptic species distinguished from Teladorsagia circumcincta/Teladorsagia trifurcata in domestic sheep by a 13% divergence in the ND4 region of mitochondrial DNA, constant differences in the synlophe, and significantly longer esophageal valve, spicules, gubernaculum, and bursa. Teladorsagia boreoarcticus represents an archaic component of the North American fauna and may have a Holarctic …

Absence Of Tuberculosis In Free-Ranging Deer In Nebraska, David J. Steffen, David W. Oates, Mauritz C. Sterner, Vickie L. Cooper Jan 1999

Absence Of Tuberculosis In Free-Ranging Deer In Nebraska, David J. Steffen, David W. Oates, Mauritz C. Sterner, Vickie L. Cooper

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Lymph nodes from 271 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) in Nebraska (USA) were examined microscopically for tuberculoid lesions. Lymph nodes lesions in at least one node were found in 12 deer. Lesions were examined with Zeihl-Neelson acid fast stains and by polymerase chain reactions using M. bovis specific probes. No evidence of tuberculosis was found. The small granulomatous lesions were likely caused by other bacteria.
