Inclusive photoproduction of D*± mesons has been measured for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies in the range 130 < W < 28OGeV and photon virtuality Q2 < IGeV2. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 37 pb-1. Total and differential cross sections as functions of the D* transverse momentum and pseudorapidity are presented in restricted kinematical regions and the data are compared with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculations using the "massive charm" and "massless charm" schemes. The measured cross sections are generally above the NLO calculations, in particular in the forward (proton) direction. The large data sample also allows the study of dijet production associated with charm. A significant resolved as well as a direct photon component contribute to the cross section. Leading order QCD Monte Carlo calculations indicate that the resolved contribution arises from a significant charm component in the photon. A massive charm NLO parton level calculation yields lower cross sections compared to the measured results in a kinematic region where the resolved photon contribution is significant.

Exclusive production of ρ0 and J/ψ mesons in e+p collisions has been studied with the ZEUS detector in the kinematic range 0.25 < Q2 < 50 GeV2, 20 < W < 167 GeV for the ρ0 data and 2 < Q2 < 40 GeV2, 50 < W < 150 GeV for the J/ψ data. Cross sections for exclusive ρ0 and J/ψ production have been measured as a function of Q2, W and t. The spin-density matrix elements r0400, r11-1i and Re r510 have been determined for exclusive ρ0 production as well as r0400 and r041-1 for exclusive J/ψ production. The results are discussed in the context of theoretical models invoking soft and hard phenomena.

The DIS diffractive cross section, dσdiffγ*p→XN/dMx, has been measured in the mass range Mx < 15 GeV for γ*p c.m. energies 60 < W < 200 GeV and photon virtualities Q2 = 7 to 140 GeV2. For fixed Q2 and Mx, the diffractive cross section rises rapidly with W, dσdiffγ*p→X N (Mx, W, Q2)/dMx ∝ Wadiff with adiff = 0.507 ± 0.034 (stat) +0.155-0.046 (syst) corresponding to a t-averaged pomeron trajectory of ̄αℙ = 1.127 ± 0.009 (stat) +0.039-0.012 (syst) which is larger than ̄αℙ observed in hadron-hadron scattering. The W dependence of the diffractive cross section is found to be the same as that of the total cross section for scattering of virtual photons on protons. The data are consistent with the assumption that the diffractive structure function FD(3)2 factorizes according to cursive greek chiℙFD(3)2(cursive greek chiℙ, β, Q2) = (cursive greek chi0//cursive greek chiℙ)nFD(2)2(β, Q2). They are also consistent with QCD based models which incorporate factorization breaking. The rise of cursive greek chiℙFD(3)2 with decreasing cursive greek chiℙ and the weak dependence of FD(2)2 on Q2 suggest a substantial contribution from partonic interactions.

Measurements of the proton structure function F2 for 0.6 < Q2 < 17 GeV2 and 1.2 × 10-5 < cursive Greek chi < 1.9 × 10 -3 from ZEUS 1995 shifted vertex data are presented. From ZEUS F2 data the slopes dF2/d ln Q2 at fixed cursive Greek chi and din F2/d ln(1/cursive Greek chi) for cursive Greek chi < 0.01 at fixed Q2 are derived. For the latter, E665 data are also used. The transition region in Q2 is explored using the simplest non-perturbative models and NLO QCD. The data at very low Q2 ≤ 0.65 GeV2 are described successfully by a combination of generalised vector meson dominance and Regge theory. From a NLO QCD fit to ZEUS data the gluon density in the proton is extracted in the range 3 × 10-5 < cursive Greek chi < 0.7. Data from NMC and BCDMS constrain the fit at large cursive Greek chi. Assuming the NLO QCD description to be valid down to Q2 ∼ 1 GeV2, it is found that the qq̄ sea distribution is still rising at small cursive Greek chi and the lowest Q2 values whereas the gluon distribution is strongly suppressed.

The e+p neutral-current deep inelastic scattering differential cross-sections dσ/dQ2, for Q2 > 400 GeV2, dσ/dx and dσ/dy, for Q2 > 400, 2500 and 10000 GeV2, have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The data sample of 47.7 pb-1 was collected at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV. The cross-section, dσ/dQ2, falls by six orders of magnitude between Q2 = 400 and 40000 GeV2. The predictions of the Standard Model are in very good agreement with the data. Complementing the observations of time-like Z° contributions to fermion-antifermion annihilation, the data provide direct evidence for the presence of Z° exchange in the …

Charged particle production in neutral current deep inelastic scattering (DIS) has been studied using the ZEUS detector. The evolution of the mean multiplicities, scaled momenta and transverse momenta in Q2 and cursive Greek chi for 10 < Q2 < 5120 GeV2 and cursive Greek chi > 6 × 10-4 has been investigated in the current and target fragmentation regions of the Breit frame. Distributions in the target region, using HERA data for the first time, are compared to distributions in the current region. Predictions based on MLLA and LPHD are inconsistent with the data.
Contributions Of Pg Graded Asphalt To Low Temperature Cracking Resistance Of Pavement, Ssu-Wei Loh, J. Olek
Contributions Of Pg Graded Asphalt To Low Temperature Cracking Resistance Of Pavement, Ssu-Wei Loh, J. Olek
JTRP Technical Reports
The purpose of this research was to study and evaluate the role that asphalt binders play in the resistance of asphalt pavements to low temperature cracking. As part of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) new specifications for asphalt binders were developed that are based on the performance of the material. The asphalt binder graded and specified according to these new performance-based specifications is called PG binder. These new specifications are commonly referred to as Superpave (Superior Performing Asphalt Pavement) binder specifications. A section of Interstate 64 in southern Indiana was experiencing severe low temperature cracking before it was reconstructed …

Embankment Widening Design Guidelines And Construction Procedures, Richard J. Deschamps, Christopher S. Hynes, Philippe L. Bourdeau
JTRP Technical Reports
In recent years failures have occurred in Indiana highway embankments where the embankments were widened and steepened in order to facilitate construction of longer, safer acceleration and deceleration lanes and to increase the traffic capacity and efficiency of existing thoroughfares. The objectives of this study were to investigate the cause of failure and to make recommendations for modifying the existing INDOT Standard Specifications and construction guidelines in an attempt to avoid similar failures in the future. A literature review and survey of state and federal transportation agencies was performed to collect current, available design guidelines and construction procedures for sideslope …

Effects Of Salt And Its Trace Minerals On Aggregate In Bituminous Pavements, Terry R. West, H. J. Park, S. E. Grover
JTRP Technical Reports
Research on the effects of deicing salts and their trace minerals on bituminous highway wearing courses was prompted by early pavement deterioration of federal and state highways in Indiana. Several bituminous surface courses containing slag, slag-dolomite, or dolomite aggregates showed deterioration soon after deicing salts were first applied. Initially, a detailed literature review (Appendix A of report) was conducted. Data on eighteen dolomite sources from a previous study (Bruner, Choi and West, 1995) plus ten additional dolomite sources formed the basis for the brine freeze thaw testing program. Mercury intrusion porosimetry testing conducted on multiple specimens showed that rock texture …

Evaluation Of Strand Transfer And Development Lengths In Pretensioned Girders With Semi-Lightweight Concrete, Robert J. Peterman, J. A. Ramirez, J. Olek
JTRP Technical Reports
Indiana has been using lightweight aggregate consisting mostly of expanded shale in the production of prestressed concrete bridge girders for several projects. The lightweight aggregate has been used as partial replacement for regular gravel or crushed limestone coarse aggregate. This semi-lightweight concrete weighs around 2080 kg/m .
In a study sponsored by the FHWA, the current AASHTO equations for the calculation of transfer and development lengths of prestressing strand were found to be unconservative in the case of lightweight concrete members with unit weight less than 1 920 kg/m3 . This finding raises a question regarding the applicability of the …

Flexible Pavement Drainage Monitoring, Performance, And Stability, Aiwen Feng, Jianfeng Hua, Thomas D. White
JTRP Technical Reports
The current study is a continuation of the study FHWA/IN/JTRP project HPR-2078, “Locating the Drainage Layer for Flexible Pavements”. In this previous study, three test sections were constructed in a new pavement on a by-pass around Fort Wayne, Indiana. These test sections were instrumental to record temperatures, moisture, frost penetration, rainfall and subdrainage system overflow. Collected data and Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis indicate the subdrainage systems are performing satisfactorily. However, concern developed over the stability and rutting characteristics of the open-graded drainage layers. As a continuation study, longer term environmental and subdrainage performance data was collected. Additional data was …
Landslide Remediation Using Unconventional Methods, Richard J. Deschamps, Cary B. Lange
Landslide Remediation Using Unconventional Methods, Richard J. Deschamps, Cary B. Lange
JTRP Technical Reports
Landslides are very common within the residual soils and sedimentary rock of Southern Indiana. A substantial amount of the Indiana State budget is spent on road repair and maintenance from damage caused by landslide. The landslide remedial technique frequently applied by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is the excavation and backfill method, which in most instances is successful. However, in many cases more liberal landslide treatments may be applied that would arrest movement, provide a sufficient safety factor, and at a lower cost. The objective of this study is to propose economically feasible landslide remedial methods that may be …

Methods Of Corrosion Protection And Durability Of Concrete Bridge Decks Reinforced With Epoxy-Coated Bars - Phase I, Lisa Michele Samples, J. A. Ramirez
JTRP Technical Reports
In this study, the results of an extensive field and laboratory investigation conducted to evaluate the corrosion performance of epoxy-coated reinforcement are reported. One hundred and twenty three concrete bridge decks containing epoxy-coated reinforcement, uncoated reinforcement, and various other corrosion protection systems were included in a field investigation. An initial visual inspection of these bridge decks showed that 44% had signs of distress from corrosion of the reinforcement. Six decks, representing 5% of the total sample, were selected for a second more detailed survey. Three of the six decks had epoxy-coated reinforcement. This number represents 11% of the total sample …
The Writings Of Russell Sturgis And Peter B. Wight: The Victorian Architect As Critic And Historian, Marjorie A. Pearson
The Writings Of Russell Sturgis And Peter B. Wight: The Victorian Architect As Critic And Historian, Marjorie A. Pearson
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The focus of this dissertation is on the writings of Russell Sturgis (1836–1909) and Peter B. Wight (1838–1925). As part of a movement that professionalized the practice of architecture in the United States, they brought an awareness of the role of architecture to a larger public, both through their buildings and their writings. Their joint beginnings in the American Pre-Raphaelite movement led to their journalistic endeavors in the New Path, published between 1863 and 1865 in New York City. As proselytizers for Ruskinianism in their architectural work and words, this pervasive force was to remain an important influence throughout their …
Pile Design Based On Cone Penetration Test Results, Rodrigo Salgado, Junhwan Lee
Pile Design Based On Cone Penetration Test Results, Rodrigo Salgado, Junhwan Lee
JTRP Technical Reports
The bearing capacity of piles consists of both base resistance and side resistance. The side resistance of piles is in most cases fully mobilized well before the maximum base resistance is reached. As the side resistance is mobilized early in the loading process, the determination of pile base resistance is a key element of pile design. Static cone penetration is well related to the pile loading process, since it is performed quasi-statically and resembles a scaled-down pile load test. In order to take advantage of the CPT for pile design, load-settlement curves of axially loaded piles bearing in sand were …

Reconciled Platoon Accommodations At Traffic Signals, Jay Wasson, Montasir Abbas, Darcy M. Bullock, Avery Rhodes, Chong Kang Zhu
JTRP Technical Reports
The use of microprocessor-based traffic signal controllers introduced in the 1960s has allowed for the development of many new strategies to make traffic signal systems more responsive to traffic conditions. Many efforts have focused on the development of real-time, adaptive control strategies. While some of these strategies have been shown to improve intersection performance, there are several factors that have limited their deployment. Some of these include substantial capital cost, complicated calibration procedures, and the reluctance of practicing engineers to deploy strategies radically different from those currently in use. Therefore, lower cost strategies that are compatible with existing infrastructure continue …

Ichthyophthirius Multifiliis Fouquet: Development And Assessment Of In Vitro Systems For Long Term Maintenance, Louise Margaret Hurley
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Twelve isolates of lchthyophthirius multifiliis were successfully established and maintained by serial passage through naive carp, for a maximum of 39 laboratory cycles. The management system employed was such that large numbers of the parasite were available for all investigations. The ability to induce exit of immature trophonts through media incubation was used to confirm events in the initial stages of host colonisation. The normal course of primary infection was also established providing useful criteria for assessing success of the in vitro systems tested. Survival of both theronts and tomonts within selected monophasic media was investigated. Theronts in Eagles Minimum …
