Religion And The Public Defender, Sadiq Reza

Articles & Chapters

It takes a special breed to have the understanding, compassion

and dedication to do what criminal defense lawyers do .... As

for public defenders - they are doing God's work. If Christ had

been a lawyer, he would have been a public defender.

Virtually all public defenders fight a daily battle against burnout

and the creeping erosion of confidence that inevitably accompany

defending acts we cannot condone and protecting those who are

the source of so much harm and grief. . . . Whether the process

unfolds subtly or suddenly, all defenders must confront the disturbing

consequences of their zealous …

An Experimental And Computational Investigation Of Microwave Regeneration Of Diesel Particulate Traps., Sriram S. Popuri Jan 1999

An Experimental And Computational Investigation Of Microwave Regeneration Of Diesel Particulate Traps., Sriram S. Popuri

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As the number and power ratings of diesel engines in both on-road and off-road applications are increasing, concern over the health effects of the exhaust emissions, especially diesel particulate matter (DPM) is becoming more significant. One of the most effective exhaust after-treatment methods is to use ceramic traps to control DPM emissions. Periodic cleaning of traps (regeneration) is essential as the flow resistance progressively increases during filtration of DPM. However, the existing regeneration technologies for ceramic particulate traps are uneconomical and/or cause structural damage to the ceramic trap element. Microwave energy offers the advantage of selectively heating only the DPM, …

Final General Management Plan Environmental Impact Statement Jan 1999

Final General Management Plan Environmental Impact Statement

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

This Final General Management Plan / Environmental Impact Statement presents three alternatives for the future of the Missouri National Recreational River: a continuation of existing (conditions (no-action) alternative, a resource protection/recreation (preferred) alternative emphasizing protection and enhancement of biologic values and the history and culture of the area, and a recreational emphasis alternative. In both action alternatives, the Corps of Engineers (COE) and the National Park Service (NPS) would manage the area through a cooperative agreement. The Corps of Engineers would function as the day-la-day manager of the water-related resources, while the National Park Service would administer the land-related resources. …

Doppler Measurements Using A Coherent Ultrawideband Random Noise Radar, Muhammad Dawood, Ram M. Narayanan Jan 1999

Doppler Measurements Using A Coherent Ultrawideband Random Noise Radar, Muhammad Dawood, Ram M. Narayanan

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

The University of Nebraska has developed a random noise radar system which transmits an ultrawideband random noise waveform with a uniform power spectral density (PSD) in the 1-2 GHz frequency range. Simulation studies and controlled laboratory tests confirm the system's ability to preserve the instantaneous phase of the received signal [l, 2]. The potential of the system to characterize the Doppler shift of moving targets exhibiting varying linear and rotational velocities was clearly demonstrated [2]. This paper provides with the results of recent field experiments at a range of about 200 m which confirm the ability of the system to …

Complete Maps Of The Aspect Sensitivity Of Vhf Atmospheric Radar Echoes, R. M. Worthington, R. D. Palmer, S. Fukao Jan 1999

Complete Maps Of The Aspect Sensitivity Of Vhf Atmospheric Radar Echoes, R. M. Worthington, R. D. Palmer, S. Fukao

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Using the MU radar at Shigaraki, Japan (34.85°N, 136.10°E), we measure the power distribution pattern of VHF radar echoes from the mid-troposphere. The large number of radar beam-pointing directions (320) allows the mapping of echo power from 0° to 40° from zenith, and also the dependence on azimuth, which has not been achieved before at VHF wavelengths. The results show how vertical shear of the horizontal wind is associated with a definite skewing of the VHF echo power distribution, for beam angles as far as 30° or more from zenith, so that aspect sensitivity cannot be assumed negligible at any …

Characterization Of The Jembrana Disease Virus Tat Gene And The Cis- And Trans-Regulatory Elements In Its Long Terminal Repeats, Hexin Chen, Graham Wilcox, Gde Kertayadnya, Charles Wood

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Jembrana disease virus (JDV) is a newly identified bovine lentivirus that is closely related to the bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV). JDV contains a tat gene, encoded by two exons, which has potent transactivation activity. Cotransfection of the JDV tat expression plasmid with the JDV promoter chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) construct pJDV-U3R resulted in a substantial increase in the level of CAT mRNA transcribed from the JDV long terminal repeat (LTR) and a dramatic increase in the CAT protein level. Deletion analysis of the LTR sequences showed that sequences spanning nucleotides 268 to 153, including the TATA box and the predicted first …

The BVDV created by the process of the invention can be engineered for use as a …

Probationary Periods- Promoting Excellence Or Legel Loophole?, Daryl R. Privott Jan 1999

Probationary Periods- Promoting Excellence Or Legel Loophole?, Daryl R. Privott

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This study, prepared for the Department of Public Administration, will evaluate the use and perceived effectiveness of probationary periods within the State of Nevada government. The probationary period is widely used throughout the private and public sectors; however very little systematic data has been collected on this topic. The probationary period can be valued as the most valid determinant of job performance and seen as the last step in the selection process or it can be a tool to deny first amendment rights. The effective use of probationary periods should be of importance to private and public agencies, managers, and …

Atrazine Degradation In A Small Stream In Iowa, Dana W. Kolpin, Stephen J. Kalkhoff Jan 1999

Atrazine Degradation In A Small Stream In Iowa, Dana W. Kolpin, Stephen J. Kalkhoff

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A study was conducted during 1990 through an 11.2-km reach of Roberts Creek in northeastern Iowa to determine the fate of atrazine in a surface water environment. Water samples were collected at ~1-month intervals from April through November during stable low to medium flow conditions and analyzed for atrazine and two of its initial biotic degradation products, desethylatrazine and deisopropylatrazine. Samples were collected on the basis of a Lagrangian model of streamflow in order to sample the same parcel of water as it moved downstream. Atrazine concentrations substantially decreased (roughly 25-60% ) between water entering and exiting the study reach …

Negative Ph, Efflorescent Mineralogy, And Consequences For Environmental Restoration At The Iron Mountain Superfund Site, California, D. Kirk Nordstrom, Charles N. Alpers Jan 1999

Negative Ph, Efflorescent Mineralogy, And Consequences For Environmental Restoration At The Iron Mountain Superfund Site, California, D. Kirk Nordstrom, Charles N. Alpers

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The Richmond Mine of the Iron Mountain copper deposit contains some of the most acid mine waters ever reported. Values of pH have been measured as low as -3.6, combined metal concentrations as high as 200 g/liter, and sulfate concentrations as high as 760 g/liter. Copious quantities of soluble metal sulfate salts such as melanterite, chalcanthite, coquimbite, rhomboclase, voltaite, copiapite, and halotrichite have been identified, and some of these are forming from negative-pH mine waters. Geochemical calculations show that, under a mine-plugging remediation scenario, these salts would dissolve and the resultant 600,000-m3 mine pool would have a pH of …

Racial And Ethnic Studies, Political Science And Mid-Wifery, Vine Deloria Jr., David E. Wilkins Jan 1999

Racial And Ethnic Studies, Political Science And Mid-Wifery, Vine Deloria Jr., David E. Wilkins

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

One of the major fallacies of Western civilization, according to Alfred North Whitehead,' was the propensity of Western thinkers to assume that ideas generated within their intellectual landscape were indicative of reality itself. Although some phases of Western science, notably physics and philosophy, have transcended their parochial origins, aspects of the old medieval synthesis still remain in the Western worldview. The gradual fragmentation of the old categories of natural history and theology into the isolated sciences and disciplines of today has produced a myriad of separate bodies of knowledge complete with their professional priesthoods and has allowed considerable slippage in …

Roberto Busa, S.J., And The Invention Of The Machine-Generated Concordance, Thomas Nelson Winter

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

This is a story from early in the technological revolution, when the application was out searching for the hardware, from a time before the Internet, a time before the PC, before the chip, before the mainframe. From a time even before programming itself.

Tasman's 1957 prophecy was no shot in the dark. His view of the future was a projection from his recent past. Thomas J. Watson, Sr. had assigned him in 1949 to be IBM liaison and support person for a young Jesuit's daring project to produce an index to the complete writings of St. Thomas Aquinas. First, Tasman's …

ARKTOS is a fully automated intelligent system that classifies sea ice and that is now being used by the U.S. National Ice Center (NIC) for daily operations related to the NIC’s task of mapping the ice covered oceans. In this paper we describe the process of taking a research project and transitioning it to an operational environment. We discuss the theoretical methodologies implemented in ARKTOS, and how ARKTOS was developed, tested, and finally moved to operations.

Empirical Computation Of Reject Ratio In Vlsi Testing, Shashank K. Mehta, Sharad C. Seth Jan 1999

Empirical Computation Of Reject Ratio In Vlsi Testing, Shashank K. Mehta, Sharad C. Seth

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Among significant components of testing cost are testlength, reject ratio, and lost-yield. In this paper a new approach is proposed to estimate the reject ratio. The empirical model is based on test-data properties that are believed to be invariant for a wide range of manufacturing technologies and types of tests. The analysis is carried out entirely in terms of the device test data, as might be available from wafer probe. Experimental results demonstrate robustness of the model.

A Synthesis For Testability Scheme For Finite State Machines Using Clock Control, Kent L. Einspahr, Shashank K. Mehta, Sharad C. Seth Jan 1999

A Synthesis For Testability Scheme For Finite State Machines Using Clock Control, Kent L. Einspahr, Shashank K. Mehta, Sharad C. Seth

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

A new method is proposed for improving the testability of a finite state machine (FSM) during its synthesis. The method exploits clock control to enhance the controllability and observability of machine states. With clock control it is possible to add new state transitions during testing. Therefore, it is easier to navigate between states in the resulting test machine. Unlike prior work, where clock control is added to the circuit as a postdesign step, here, clock control is considered in conjunction with a symbolic scheme for encoding the states of the FSM. The encoding is shown to result in significant reductions …
