Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper investigates integrating power engineering material over the breadth of an electrical engineering curriculum. Electrical engineering curricula have a large number of required courses and many subareas for students to study. By introducing power concepts in a variety of courses, students may be motivated to take additional courses in the power area and are better prepared for the diverse background which will be required of them as practising power engineers. The important interrelationships between subareas of electrical engineering are better understood by students when cross discipline applications are discussed. This paper describes the introduction of power concepts and applications …

Nonlinear Constrained Optimizer And Parallel Processing For Golden Block Line Search, Duc T. Nguyen, Wilson H. Tang, Yeou K. Tung, Hakizumwami B. Runesha Jan 1999

Nonlinear Constrained Optimizer And Parallel Processing For Golden Block Line Search, Duc T. Nguyen, Wilson H. Tang, Yeou K. Tung, Hakizumwami B. Runesha

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Generalized exponential penalty functions are constructed for the multiplier methods in solving nonlinear programming problems. The non-smooth extreme constraint Gext is replaced by a single smooth constraint Gs by using the generalized exponential function (base a>1). The well-known K.S. function is found to be a special case of our proposed formulation. Parallel processing for Golden block line search algorithm is then summarized, which can also be integrated into our formulation. Both small and large-scale nonlinear programming problems (up to 2000 variables and 2000 nonlinear constraints) have been solved to validate the proposed algorithms.

Guarding The Gate To The Courthouse: How Trial Judges Are Using Their Evidentiary Screening Role To Remake Tort Causation Rules, Lucinda M. Finley Jan 1999

Guarding The Gate To The Courthouse: How Trial Judges Are Using Their Evidentiary Screening Role To Remake Tort Causation Rules, Lucinda M. Finley

Journal Articles

The article looks at what trial judges are actually doing in toxic tort cases in the post-Daubert world; it reviews and critiques cases in which judges have in effect adopted a new rule of causation law that requires plaintiffs to rely on epidemiology, and in particular epidemiology that demonostrates an increase in relative risk of 2.0 or greater; the article considers the substantive as well as the normative implications of this legal treatment of epidemiology.

Parental Rights And The Ugly Duckling, Margaret F. Brinig, F. H. Buckley Jan 1999

Parental Rights And The Ugly Duckling, Margaret F. Brinig, F. H. Buckley

Journal Articles

Hans Christian Andersen's "The Ugly Duckling" is best remembered for its moral, "To be born in a duck's nest, in a farmyard, is of no consequence to a bird, if it is hatched from a swan's egg." Having read and thought about this story many times, we should like to suggest another, less heart-warming, interpretation. The story of the Ugly Duckling, that most resilient of cygnets, masks the tragedy of children who suffer abuse. Its message, that personal spirit will triumph when a child grows up, misrepresents the experience of many victimized children. If we wait for the child to …

Finite Element Analysis Solution Applications To Photoreceptor Modules, Robert Hildebrand Jan 1999

Finite Element Analysis Solution Applications To Photoreceptor Modules, Robert Hildebrand

Theses

One of the primary components in a Xerox copier is the print engine. The center of this engine is comprised of a photoreceptor, which is a roller/belt module mounted to a frame. The belt revolves around the module acquiring and transposing toner to sheets of paper as they come into contact with the module. The initial design of these modules can often lead to registration and print quality problems later in the assembly and application phases of design. The current analysis procedure includes lengthy commercial FEA packages that require high designer investment. For this reason, many new ideas are never …

The Human Race, Alex Gurevich Jan 1999

The Human Race, Alex Gurevich

Theses

To tell a story and to tell it well is a paramount function in human society. Whether the desired outcome is to engage, educate, or entertain the viewer the goal is the same. Through story we endeavor to learn something more about ourselves and hopefully show others something new within themselves. As the old adage goes, "Give a man a fish you feed him for a day. Teach that man how to fish you feed him for a lifetime." One could simply give that hungry man a pole, a line, a hook, and a worm and give him directions on …

Time-Resolved Reflection High-Energy Electron Diffraction Study Of The Ge(111)-C(2×8)-(1×1) Phase Transition, Xinglin Zeng, Bo Lin, Ibrahim El-Kholy, Hani E. Elsayed-Ali Jan 1999

Time-Resolved Reflection High-Energy Electron Diffraction Study Of The Ge(111)-C(2×8)-(1×1) Phase Transition, Xinglin Zeng, Bo Lin, Ibrahim El-Kholy, Hani E. Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The dynamics of the Ge(111)-c(2×8)-(1×1) phase transition is investigated by 100-ps time-resolved reflection high-energy electron diffraction. A laser pulse heats the surface while a synchronized electron pulse is used to obtain the surface diffraction pattern. Slow heating shows that the adatoms in Ge(111)-c(2×8) start to disorder at ∼510 K and are converted to a disordered adatom arrangement at 573 K. For heating with 100-ps laser pulses, the Ge(111)-c(2×8) reconstructed adatom arrangement starts to disorder at 584±16K, well above the onset temperature of ∼510 K for the disordering of Ge(111)-c(2×8) observed for slow …

The Midas Touch: The Lethal Effect Of Wealth Maximization, Jeanne L. Schroeder Jan 1999

The Midas Touch: The Lethal Effect Of Wealth Maximization, Jeanne L. Schroeder

Articles

The article critically examines the concept of wealth maximization in law and economics, arguing that it is fundamentally flawed due to its inability to account for the distinction between exchange value and use value. Wealth maximization, rooted in the masculine regime of possession and exchange, represses the feminine act of enjoyment, leading to a paradox where achieving its goal would result in the collapse of the market system. The analysis draws on Lacanian theory to explore the sexual impasse underlying this paradox, suggesting that the pursuit of wealth without consideration for enjoyment is self-destructive and unsustainable.

An Investigation Of Evolutionary Computing In Systems Identification For Preliminary Design, Andrew Harry Watson Jan 1999

An Investigation Of Evolutionary Computing In Systems Identification For Preliminary Design, Andrew Harry Watson

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

This research investigates the integration of evolutionary techniques for symbolic regression. In particular the genetic programming paradigm is used together with other evolutionary computational techniques to develop novel approaches to the improvement of areas of simple preliminary design software using empirical data sets. It is shown that within this problem domain, conventional genetic programming suffers from several limitations, which are overcome by the introduction of an improved genetic programming strategy based on node complexity values, and utilising a steady state algorithm with subpopulations. A further extension to the new technique is introduced which incorporates a genetic algorithm to aid the …

Transformation Of Multidirectional Sea Field And Computational Study, Suzana Ilic Jan 1999

Transformation Of Multidirectional Sea Field And Computational Study, Suzana Ilic

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

A computational model based on the evolution equation for water waves (Li, 1994b) derived from the original Berkhoffs (1972) "Mild Slope Equation" is tested against multidirectional sea data. The model accounts for reflection as well as diffraction-refraction processes, which is important for applications involving coastal structures. The accuracy and convergence of the numerical solution, as well as the possibility of the implementation of an adaptive numerical scheme are investigated and implemented. The model was firstly tested using laboratory measurements (Briggs et al, 1995) of random directional wave diffraction around a semi-infinite breakwater on a flat bottom. These tests confirm the …

Are Swap Agreements Securities Or Futures: The Inadequacies Of Applying The Traditional Regulatory Approach To Otc Derivatives Transactions, Willa E. Gibson

Akron Law Faculty Publications

This Article contends that the classification of swap agreements as securities or futures is inappropriate given that the OTC derivatives market is a wholly different market than the ones for which securities and commodities laws were devised. Part II provides an overview of the swaps market. Part III discusses the jurisdictional problems between the SEC and CFTC regarding derivatives. Part IV examines whether swap transactions are securities. Part V examines whether swap transactions are futures contracts. Part VI surveys the exemption of swaps from CFTC authority. Part VII discusses the public policy goals in the OTC derivatives market, including what …

Establishing A Link Between Mapk Pathways And Hormones Signal Transduction In Plants, Marc Meulener Jan 1999

Establishing A Link Between Mapk Pathways And Hormones Signal Transduction In Plants, Marc Meulener

Honors Theses

Mitogen Activated Protein Kinase (MAPK) pathways are ubiquitous among eukaryotes, and are involved in the transduction of various extracellular signals. In mammals, three MAPK pathways have been identified, two of these respond to stress, and one can stimulate growth and differentiation. MAPKs have also been found in plants, and it has been suggested that a MAPK pathway may be involved in the signal transduction of auxin and cytokinin, two plant hormones that stimulate growth and differentiation. However, at this time, there is no conclusive evidence supporting this hypothesis. By studying the effect ofMAPKK's of both plant and animal origin in …

Promises Of The Patiarchy : A Study Of Leadership Within The Promise Keepers Movement, Daniel W. Beeman Jan 1999

Promises Of The Patiarchy : A Study Of Leadership Within The Promise Keepers Movement, Daniel W. Beeman

Honors Theses

By looking at the roles that gender and faith play in an organization and their leadership, this paper will make a significant advance in leadership studies that is not overwhelmingly present. The field of leadership studies will be able to use this as a way to understand those two contexts in addition to being able to see one more way to look at the leadership of an entire movement.

The Legitimacy Of Leadership Studies As An Academic Field Of Study, Megan Moran, Joy Shortlidge Jan 1999

The Legitimacy Of Leadership Studies As An Academic Field Of Study, Megan Moran, Joy Shortlidge

Honors Theses

Before exploring the legitimacy of leadership studies as an academic field of study, we will first explore the characteristics of a liberal arts education and establish its legitimacy (through historical analyses) as the "standard" of higher education in America, and the educational approach most associated with cultivating an enlightened citizenry in a democratic society. Once the legitimacy of a liberal arts education is established, this form of education will serve as the benchmark to which we will compare leadership studies. We will apply the same criteria that established the legitimacy of a liberal arts education to the field of leadership …

Washing Feet : A Revolutionary Principle Of Leadership, Josh Hayden Jan 1999

Washing Feet : A Revolutionary Principle Of Leadership, Josh Hayden

Honors Theses

The teachings of Jesus were a leadership paradox. He said that to live one must die; to be first one must be last, to move up, one must move down, and to become rich, one must become poor. If we look at people, problems, situations and life itself through the eyes of this astounding Galilean carpenter, there are unlimited things we can learn about leadership. In the process, we also learn about ourselves, our motivations, our weaknesses and strengths, and our ability or inability to command a following that will have a lasting impact. Each of these areas are critical …

Continental Runoff And Effects On The North Atlantic Ocean Subtropical Mode Water, Larry P. Atkinson, Chester E. Grosch Jan 1999

Continental Runoff And Effects On The North Atlantic Ocean Subtropical Mode Water, Larry P. Atkinson, Chester E. Grosch

CCPO Publications

Interannual salinity variations in North Atlantic Subtropical Mode Water (STMW) are well known although the cause is less well understood. Attempts to model local salinity variation with local evaporation and precipitation have not been successful and some authors invoke advection of low salinity water as the cause. Examination of the STMW and North American river runoff data suggests that runoff may partly explain the salinity variations. It is known that low salinity water resulting from Mississippi River outflow is transported well past Cape Hatteras. Spearman Rank Correlation analysis and spectra and cross-spectra Fourier correlation analysis both show that river flow …
