Faculty Publications

Static Light scattering and electric field-induced Kerr measurements were performed above the nematic-isotropic phase transition of a terminal-lateral-lateral-terminal negative Poisson ratio trimer. Far both measurements the inverse susceptibility was observed to be nearly linear with temperature, a result inconsistent with our previously reported Kerr data [Phys. Rev. E 58, 2041 (1998)]. Marketing, Business Processes, And Shareholder Value: An Organizationally Embedded View Of Marketing Activities And The Discipline Of Marketing, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava, Tasadduq A. Shervani, Liam Fahey Oct 1999

Marketing, Business Processes, And Shareholder Value: An Organizationally Embedded View Of Marketing Activities And The Discipline Of Marketing, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava, Tasadduq A. Shervani, Liam Fahey

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The authors develop a framework for understanding the integration of marketing with business processes and shareholder value. The framework redefines marketing phenomena as embedded in three core business processes that generate value for customers-product development management, supply chain management, and customer relationship management-which in turn creates shareholder value. Such a conceptualization of marketing has the potential to introduce dramatic shifts in the scope, content, and influence of marketing in the organization. The authors highlight the implications of an organizationally embedded view of marketing for the future of marketing theory and practice.

Teaching The Retrenchment Generation: When Sapphire Meets Socrates At The Intersection Of Race, Gender, And Authority, Pamela J. Smith Oct 1999

Teaching The Retrenchment Generation: When Sapphire Meets Socrates At The Intersection Of Race, Gender, And Authority, Pamela J. Smith

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

This Article is about perceptions and the negative sociological factors that feed these perceptions as Black women attempt to teach the Retrenchment Generation. For purposes of this Article, the Retrenchment Generation is not limited to any particular age group or period of time. Rather, the Retrenchment Generation refers to a state of mind that makes race-based, sex-based, and race/sex-based microaggressions acceptable and in fact normal. The Retrenchment Generation is defined by the synergism that is created by racial isolation, particularly in the educational arena, retrenchment fervor, and the presumption of incompetence that inflexibly presumes that all professional Black women are …

Economic Currents: The State Of The State Economy, Alan Clayton-Matthews

Public Policy and Public Affairs Faculty Publication Series

In the midst of continuing economic growth, we are seeing signs of a possible future slowdown in the Commonwealth’s economy. June’s Leading Economic Index for Massachusetts was down nearly a percentage point from its May level, and consumer confidence fell moderately in the same month. In the labor market, there is evidence that inflationary pressures may be building.

Lincoln Avenue Neighborhood Business District Parking Study, Benjamin Corrales Oct 1999

Lincoln Avenue Neighborhood Business District Parking Study, Benjamin Corrales

Master's Projects

Parking studies are used to evaluate the current supply of parking or to plan for future parking needs. Some parking studies deal with the adequacy of parking for a particular need; others are designed to evaluate parking conditions in a specific area; and some others studies are designed to evaluate residential parking impacted by encroachment from outside parkers.

Independently of the reason may be to originate a parking study, it is necessary to define the area that will be affected by the analysis.

In this particular case the parking study is concentrated on Lincoln Avenue Neighborhood Business District, formerly known …

Mreps: A New Object Representation For Graphics, Andrew L. Thall Oct 1999

Mreps: A New Object Representation For Graphics, Andrew L. Thall

Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports

M-reps are a multiscale approach to the modeling and rendering of 30 solid geometry. Traditional geometric models, whether b-reps or CSG, are represented at infinitesimal spatial scale and then require simplification to meet needs requiting coarser scale or smaller data sets. We have developed a model that is designed at successively smaller scales and supports a coarse-to-fine hierarchy in design, rende1ing, physical deformation, and other graphics operations. We base our representation on figural models, defined at coarse scale by a hierarchy of figures - protrusions, indentations, corners, neighboring figures, and included figures - which simultaneously represent solid regions and their …

An Overlap Study Of Architecture Resources On The Internet, Jeanne M. Brown

Library Faculty Research

Every librarian knows the importance of a core collection of print materials. Those are "the important materials that form the center of the collection that most libraries would wish to hold."(FN1) Now certain Web sites and certain categories of sites are starting to emerge as core Internet resources. This paper studies whether there is consensus among architecture librarians and bibliographers about the Web sites of value for students and faculty in accredited architecture degree programs.

The Effective Use Of Volunteers: Best Practices For The Public Sector, Jeffrey L. Brudney Oct 1999

The Effective Use Of Volunteers: Best Practices For The Public Sector, Jeffrey L. Brudney

Law and Contemporary Problems

Brudney posits a relationship between the best practices and the benefits realized from volunteer involvement. A volunteer program in the public sector is sponsored by a government agency and, thus, occurs in an organizational context; remuneration is not provided for volunteers' contributions, but reimbursement for their expenses is permitted; the time is given freely, yet volunteers may certainly benefit as well, and the work fulfills ongoing responsibilities of the host agency.

Critical It Role In Healthcare: National Agenda, Applications, And Technologies, Jack Corley, Warren Karp, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

We share a widely-held vision that tomorrow's health care will be delivered by a distributed team using a knowledge based process that is focused on prevention and wellness. Caregivers will be able to treat and monitor patients where and when needed, capturing data as a natural byproduct of care delivery. Clinical teams with a wide range of skills and expertise will deliver consistent, quality care based on timely, situation-specific knowledge and guidance derived from outcomes evidence. That same knowledge will support advances in healthcare research and education. Home care and remote medicine will increase, reducing the need for high-cost hospitalization. …

Efficient Support For Decision Flows In E-Commerce Applications, Richard Hull, Francois Llirbat, Jianwen Su, Guozhu Dong, Bharat Kumar, Gang Zhou Oct 1999

Efficient Support For Decision Flows In E-Commerce Applications, Richard Hull, Francois Llirbat, Jianwen Su, Guozhu Dong, Bharat Kumar, Gang Zhou

Kno.e.sis Publications

In the coming era of segment-of-one marketing, decisions about business transactions will be quite intricate, so that customer treatments can be highly individualized, reflecting customer preferences, targeted business objectives, etc. This paper describes a paradigm called “decision flows” for specifying a form of incremental decision-making that can combine a myriad of diverse business factors and be executed in near-realtime. Starting with initial input, a decision flow will iteratively gather and derive additional information until a conclusion is reached. Decision flows can be specified in a rules-based manner that generalizes so-called “business rules” but provides more structure than traditional expert systems. …

End-Runs And Hairy Eyeballs: The Costs Of Corruption Controls In Market Democracies, Frank Anechiarico Oct 1999

End-Runs And Hairy Eyeballs: The Costs Of Corruption Controls In Market Democracies, Frank Anechiarico

Connecticut Journal of International Law

The focus of this article is the chief mechanism of governance, public administration, and the way that corruption control in market democracies influences that mechanism. There are three issues related to the role of corruption control that make it an important topic for those interested in government ethics and the evolution of democratic government. First, corruption control, as it has evolved in the United States and elsewhere, is associated with bureaucratic pathologies that degrade the quality of public service. Second, the application of market mechanisms to public administration in the reinventing government movement in the United States (part of what …

When The People Decide: A Study Of The Independence Movement In Ghana, Angela Howard Oct 1999

When The People Decide: A Study Of The Independence Movement In Ghana, Angela Howard

African Diaspora ISPs

In this paper, I examine the struggle for independence in Ghana. I explore what factors inspire the quest for freedom that emerged in Ghana as well as all over the world during the 1940's and 1950's. I explore the life of Kwame Nkrumah, the movement's leader, and how his political consciousness developed. I examine the major events that took place in Ghana during the late 1940's and early 1950's that set the stage for independence. Finally, I examine some possible reasons why Ghana was able to become the first African country south of the Sahara to achieve independence.
