Impact Of Transmission Impairments On The Teletraffic Performance Of Wavelength-Routed Optical Networks, Byrav Ramamurthy, Debasish Datta, Helena Feng, Jonathan P. Heritage, Biswanath Mukherjee

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

In a wavelength-routed optical network, a transmitted signal remains in the optical domain over the entire route (lightpath) assigned to it between its source and destination nodes. The optical signal may have to traverse a number of crossconnect switches (XCS’s), fiber segments, and optical amplifiers, e.g., erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA’s). Thus, while propagating through the network, the signal may degrade in quality as it encounters crosstalk at the XCS’s and also picks up amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise at the EDFA’s. Since these impairments continue to degrade the signal quality as it progresses toward its destination, the received bit error …

Introduction, B. Zorina Khan

The significant breakthrough in plant biotechnology is the development of techniques to transform genes from unrelated sources into commercially important crop plants to develop resistance against insect pests. A local cotton cultivar MNH-93 was transformed through Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain C58C(1) assisted by bombardment with tungsten particles. The Agrobacterium strain contained the recombinant binary vector pKMAB harboring crylAb under 35S promoter. Neomycin phosphotransferase (nptII) gene was used as a selectable marker at a concentration of 50 mg L-1. The transformation efficiency remained 0.26%. The primary transformants were analyzed for transgene integration and expression through PCR and Southern Blotting and Western dot …

From Interval Methods Of Representing Uncertainty To A General Description Of Uncertainty, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott Ferson, Lev Ginzburg, Harry Schulte, Matthew R. Barry, Hung T. Nguyen

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Measurements do not result in an exact value of the measured quantity; even after the most accurate measurement, there is still some uncertainty about the actual value of the measured quantity. Traditionally, in science and engineering, this uncertainty is characterized by a probability distribution; however, often, we do not know this probability distribution exactly. So, to get a more adequate description of this uncertainty, we must consider classes of possible probability distributions. A natural question is: Are all possible classes needed for this description? In this paper, we show that even for simple situations, we indeed need arbitrary closed convex …

On Combining Statistical And Fuzzy Techniques: Detection Of Business Cycles From Uncertain Data, Hung T. Nguyen, Berlin Wu, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Detecting the beginning and the end of the business cycle is an important and difficult economic problem. One of the reasons why this problem is difficult is that for each year, we have only expert estimates (subjective probabilities) indicating to what extent the economy was in growth or recession. In our previous papers, we used fuzzy techniques to process this uncertain information; namely, we used the operation min(a,b) to combine the subjective probabilities (expert estimates) of two events into a probability that both events happen. This function corresponds to the most optimistic estimate of the joint probability. In this paper, …

How Complex Adaptive Systems Address Manufacturing Planning System Challenges And Provide New Leadership Perspectives, Charles V. Nemer Oct 1999

How Complex Adaptive Systems Address Manufacturing Planning System Challenges And Provide New Leadership Perspectives, Charles V. Nemer

Theses and Graduate Projects

Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRPII) is viewed as an organizational system through the metaphor of complex adaptive systems (CAS) in order to gain new insights that benefit manufacturing leadership and resolve challenges faced by MRPII. This thesis examines the history of manufacturing to reveal the metaphor under which MRPII currently operates and then introduces the metaphor of CAS, thus resulting in new direction for the manufacturing leader. Based on a review of the existing literature in manufacturing and in complexity theory, the work of Holland (1995) and Daft (1992) are central to establishing the relationship of MRPII to organizational and complexity …

Preliminary Investigation Of The Extent Of Sediment Contamination In The Lower Grand River, Richard Rediske, Carissa Bertin, Jessica Blunt, Min Qi

Scientific Technical Reports

A preliminary investigation of the nature and extent of sediment contamination in the lower Grand River was performed. Three areas in the lower Grand River exceeded sediment quality guidelines for heavy metals and selected organic chemicals. The locations and parameters of concern are listed below:

Harbor Island (G20). Exceeds sediment PEL values for chromium, lead, nickel, and DDE in the top core section. Deeper core sections were extensively contaminated with heavy metals.

Spring Lake (G6). Exceeds sediment PEL values for chromium, lead, cadmium, nickel, and DDE.

Grand Haven (G12). Exceeds sediment PEL values for chromium and nickel. The sediments at …
