In many practical situations, e.g., in aerospace applications and in mammography, it is important to test the structural integrity of material structures. We show that interval methods can help.

The Impact Of Landmines Yesterday And Today, A. G. Marangione Oct 1999

The Impact Of Landmines Yesterday And Today, A. G. Marangione

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

On April 20, 1945, at about 5 a.m., still dark, I and two of my companions from Troop A 16th Cavalry, were on a reconnaissance patrol on the outskirts of Dusseldorf, Germany. I was in the passenger seat of a jeep. I had a driver and one man in the rear manning a .30-caliber machine gun. His name was Clarence Brown, but because he was a huge fellow we affectionately called him "Bear." We had been together since our Cavalry-Squadron was formed in 1942 in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. On April 20 we were part of a very proud and successful …

Profile: Buildings And Billboards...Preserving Our Excellence While Building For Our Future, University Relations

Profile (1996-)

"There is no doubt in my mind that the work and progress of our college will move forward steadily in the coming months. Teachers will enter their classrooms, the lights will be on, the buildings clean and functional, students will be in their seats, textbooks and food will be available for their nourishment, residence halls will be functional and welcoming, class lists and reading lists will be passed around: learning will happen."

The Effects Of Electronic Commerce On The Traditional Shopping Center Lease, Jennifer E. Doty Oct 1999

The Effects Of Electronic Commerce On The Traditional Shopping Center Lease, Jennifer E. Doty

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

The Internet, in addition to its wealth of information, has introduced America to a new way to purchase goods. Along with this new way to shop comes the potential for conflict between the way the retail industry has done business in the past and this new technology. Traditional shopping center leases contain clauses which base the tenant's rent on a percentage of the sales from that store. To ensure its profits, landlords require tenants not compete within a certain radius of the shopping center. With the birth of electronic commerce, customers are ordering their goods directly from retailers online and …

From Fuzzy Values To Intuitionistic Fuzzy Values To Intuitionistic Fuzzy Intervals Etc.: Can We Get An Arbitrary Ordering?, Vladik Kreinovich, Masao Mukaidono, Krassimir Atanassov Oct 1999

From Fuzzy Values To Intuitionistic Fuzzy Values To Intuitionistic Fuzzy Intervals Etc.: Can We Get An Arbitrary Ordering?, Vladik Kreinovich, Masao Mukaidono, Krassimir Atanassov

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Traditional fuzzy logic uses real numbers as truth values. This description is not always adequate, so in intuitionistic fuzzy logic, we use pairs of real numbers to describe a truth value. Such pairs can be described either as pairs (t,f) for which t+f<=1, or, alternatively, as pairs (t,1-f) for which t<=1-f. To make this description even more adequate, instead of using real numbers to described each value t and f, we can use intervals, and thus get interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy values which can be described by 4 real numbers each. We can iterate this procedure again and again. The question is: can we get an arbitrary partially ordered set in this manner? An arbitrary lattice? In this paper, we show that although we cannot thus generate arbitrary lattices, we can actually generate an arbitrary partially ordered set in this manner. In this sense, the "intervalization" operation which underlies the notion of an intuitionistic fuzzy set, is indeed universal.

Prosthetics Outreach Foundation, Cisr Journal

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Prosthetics Outreach Foundation (POF) is a non profit medical service organization that provides urgently needed high quality prostheses (artificial limbs) to amputees in developing countries and in the United States. Since 1988, the staff and volunteers have fitted over 10,000 children and adults with new prostheses, enabling each amputee to walk again with dignity. POF helps communities to meet the needs of their own amputees by establishing clinics to create and fit artificial limbs and workshops to manufacture prosthetic components with local materials.

A Black Range Christmas Tree, Thomas Lynch Oct 1999

A Black Range Christmas Tree, Thomas Lynch

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Driving north from Las Cruces on I-25, one departs the relative green of the sheltered town of tree-lined streets and enters stark desert. The view while skirting the southern edge of the Jornada del Muerto is hardly promising for an expedition, like ours, in search of a Christmas tree.
