Love And Longing In Devotional Hinduism, Nancy M. Martin Dec 1999

Love And Longing In Devotional Hinduism, Nancy M. Martin

Religious Studies Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"As Julius Lipner has so eloquently stated in his chapter earlier in this ..r\. volume, Hinduism is stubbornly multiform, a tapestry of interwoven worldviews, practices, and beliefs characterized by a fundamental and irreducible orality, a movement from multiplicity and outward appearance toward identity and interiority, and a search within a constantly shifting world for ordering principles and centers of meaning around which to shape meaningful lives. I would now like to explore one current within this broad river of tradition - the devotional or bhakti path. The passionate love shared by devotee and God that is the driving force of …

Manipulating Images Of Women's Power In Elizabethen England: Elizabeth I, Spenser, And Shakespeare, Amanda Kaye Martin Dec 1999

Manipulating Images Of Women's Power In Elizabethen England: Elizabeth I, Spenser, And Shakespeare, Amanda Kaye Martin

Theses & Dissertations

This work celebrates the influence of Elizabeth I on Elizabethan society and literature. In the opening of his Shakespearean Negotiations. Stephen Greenblatt describes writing as an outlet for the dead to speak to the living through "textual traces of themselves" that "make themselves heard in the voices of the living". These textual traces form the foundation for the critical theory of New Historicism, which perceives such traces as a conduit for literary critics to learn about an author's view of the nation, and era, in which he or she lived. In "The Elizabethan Subject and the Spenserian Text," Louis …

The Battle For Portland, Maine, L. Andrew Tollin Dec 1999

The Battle For Portland, Maine, L. Andrew Tollin

Federal Communications Law Journal

In 1985, when the FCC began the competitive process of deciding who would be licensed to provide cellular telephone service to Portland, Maine, chaos and irony reigned. Thirteen years later, after a bitter legal battle among local telephone companies, a provider was finally selected. At one point or another, all three branches of government became involved. The license itself changed hands three times during the case and, in essence, three different telephone systems were constructed. Ultimately, the case was decided on the basis of whether the FCC complied with a preexisting federal law, the Paperwork Reduction Act, in adopting the …

Extracting Fuzzy Sparse Rule Base By Cartesian Representation And Clustering, Yeung Yam, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Sparse rule base and interpolation have been proposed as possible solution to alleviate the geometric complexity problem of large fuzzy set. However, no formal method to extract sparse rule base is yet available. This paper combines the recently introduced Cartesian representation of membership functions and a mountain method-based clustering technique for extraction. A case study is included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.

Influence Of Deleterious Rhizobacteria On Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia Esula) Roots, Mark A. Brinkman, Sharon A. Clay, Robert J. Kremer Dec 1999

Influence Of Deleterious Rhizobacteria On Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia Esula) Roots, Mark A. Brinkman, Sharon A. Clay, Robert J. Kremer

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Rhizobacteria have been shown to be phytotoxic to leafy spurge in laboratory assays. This field study investigated the influence of two strains of Pseudomonas fluorescens [Trevisan, (Migula)], deleterious rhizobacteria (DRB), on root weight, root bud number, and root carbohydrate content of leafy spurge at three sites located in northeast and north-central South Dakota. Soils were inoculated with 2 g of starch-based granules containing no bacteria or starch granules containing 108colony-forming units (cfu)/g of either bacterial strain LS102 (Montana origin) or LS174 (South Dakota origin). Bacterial strains were detected on root samples from treated areas. Root weight and root carbohydrate content …

Disclosure Detection In Multivariate Categorical Databases: Auditing Confidentiality Protection Through Two New Matrix Operators, Sumit Dutta Chowdhury, George T. Duncan, Ramayya Krishnan, Stephen F. Roehrig, Sumitra Mukherjee Dec 1999

Disclosure Detection In Multivariate Categorical Databases: Auditing Confidentiality Protection Through Two New Matrix Operators, Sumit Dutta Chowdhury, George T. Duncan, Ramayya Krishnan, Stephen F. Roehrig, Sumitra Mukherjee

CCE Faculty Articles

As databases grow more prevalent and comprehensive, database administrators seek to limit disclosure of confidential information while still providing access to data. Practical databases accommodate users with heterogeneous needs for access. Each class of data user is accorded access to only certain views. Other views are considered confidential, and hence to be protected. Using illustrations from health care and education, this article addresses inferential disclosure of confidential views in multidimensional categorical databases. It demonstrates that any structural, so data-value-independent method for detecting disclosure can fail. Consistent with previous work for two-way tables, it presents a data-value-dependent method to obtain tight …

Fisheries Research Reports

Western Australia's wetline fishery potentially includes every licensed fishing boat in the State and encompasses a number of inter-relationships between various boats and commercial fisheries. This study covers the 'wetline' or open access fishery, which encompasses those activities associated with the unrestricted Western Australian fishing boat licence (FBL). The activities associated with this fishery involve any commercial fishing which is not covered by fisheries legislation.

A separate section entitled 'So you want to go wetlining?' is provided at page 101 as an easy reference guide to industry and others interested in wetline fishing. It is recommended that it be read …
