Nitrate Attenuation In A Narrow Non-Forested Riparian Buffer Zone In An Agricultural Watershed In Southern Ontario, Mark David Harris

Riparian buffer zones are defined as strips of natural vegetation separating streams or lakes from surrounding upland landscapes. These zones may effectively reduce the nitrate-N load in shallow ground water draining intensively fertilized agricultural regions. Contemporary research has tended to focus on wide, forested riparian zones situated on poorly drained lowland sites. In addition, research has typically focused on the growing season, when the ecosystem is biologically active, with relatively day hydrological conditions. This field study monitored spatial and temporal patterns of nitrate-N in a comparatively narrow, non-forested buffer zone situated in an upland agricultural watershed in southern Ontario. Results …

Family Law And Gay And Lesbian Family Issues In The Twentieth Century, Nancy Polikoff, David Chambers

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Over the past thirty years, lesbians and gay men have increasingly challenged conventional definitions of marriage and the family. In this brief article, the authors tell the story of gay people and family law in the United States across this period. They divide their discussion into two sections: issues regarding the recognition of the same-sex couple relationship and issues regarding gay men and lesbians as parents. These issues overlap, of course, but since family law discussions commonly treat adult-adult issues of all sorts separately from parent-child issues, the authors believe it convenient and helpful to do so as well.

Over 30 species of grasses are utilized for turf (Huff 1998), while others are important in agriculture as forage crops. The commercial value of this group of plants makes them attractive for improvement through modern genetic engineering techniques (Johnson and Riordan, in press). Because of the diversity of species and the consequent differences in biology among them, broad generalizations regarding the ecological effects of pest resistance genes introduced into these crops cannot be made. Rather, questions regarding the potential for pest resistance genes must be directed toward specific cases in which the species and the particular introduced gene are known. …

Individual kernels of wheat containing immature rice weevils, Sitophilus oryzae (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), parasitized by Anisopteromalus calandrae (Howard) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) could be separated from uninfested kernels and kernels that contained unparasitized weevils by using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy.Wheat kernels from cultures of the parasitoid were X-rayed and sorted into uninfested kernels, kernels infested with weevil larvae or pupae, kernels containing parasitoid larvae feeding on host weevils, and kernels containing parasitoid pupae and remains of the host. Few references in the literature have been made with respect to the diagnosis of late onset psychosis by the use of behavioral observations coupled with neuropsychological and neuroimaging techniques. This is a report of the case of a 68-year-old woman who experienced a sudden onset of psychotic illness characterized by delusions and confabulation. As part of her neurobehavioral evaluation, a SPECT scan revealed right frontal and left anterior temporal lobe hypoperfusion. Serial neuropsychological evaluations demonstrated decline on tests of executive control (monitoring, allocation of attention, perseveration) and visuospatial abilities, whereas performance in other areas of cognitive functioning remained close to …

A retrospective cohort study was conducted, to assess the relationship between onsite sewage treatment and disposal system (OSTDS) failures and giardiasis and shigellosis. Cases in close proximity to OSTDS were analyzed to ascertain any association with failed systems. It was predicted that the risk of acquiring giardiasis or shigellosis was greater than one when comparing exposure to failed versus functional OSTDS. Records of failed systems, functional systems, and disease cases were mapped using a geographical information system (GIS). School skills training and schoolwide management programs are often applied in schools by introducing a package that has been developed in another school and worked well there. When transplanted, however, these programs often fail to achieve satisfactory results. This study focuses on the application of a transplanted, state-mandated, schoolwide program as carried out in a small rural elementary school (population 250). It compares the program with features of programs recommended in the empirical literature, in order to identify components which should be included to ensure the effectiveness of such programs.
