Arbitration can serve as a necessary safe harbor from procedural and substantive cultural bias in the general public courts. Arbitration also can serve as a laboratory for process reforms as cultural minorities attempt to craft rules that better govern their lives than do the purportedly “one size fits all” rules that the majority has crafted. In so allowing cultural minorities to structure their lives and legal disputes in ways that reflect their particular needs, minority-culture arbitration also has great potential for habituating the general public to the realities of the lives of cultural minorities and to the notion that custom-made …

Acute myocardial infarction is responsible for an extraordinary number of deaths per year in the adult population. Both traditional risk factors (ex., smoking) and non-traditional risk factors (ex., hostility) have been studied for many years in regard to cardiac disease prognosis and progression. Based on past studies, the area of potential psychological cardiac risk factors includes a broad range of characteristics. Difficulties in interpreting and comparing results include a lack of consistent and objective grading criteria and standardized measurements. The decision to undergo gene therapy in utero for the sake of a fetus should legally rest with the pregnant woman rather than the judiciary or the legislature. Part I of this article provides an overview of the current scope of gene therapy. Part II discusses previous court decisions that either granted or denied petitions for involuntary prenatal intervention. Part III analyzes three reasons why the courts should not impose gene therapy on pregnant women as the technology becomes available. First, a policy that mandates gene therapy would place an undue burden on pregnant women and violate the Equal Protection …

This article will review the current status of sexual harassment in the military, discuss why courts-martial are ineffective in punishing and deterring sexual harassment, and suggest that permitting sexual harassment claims in a forum other than the military justice system would help deter future sexual harassment in the military at no greater cost to military discipline and preparedness than is inherent in the current system.

Newly available data indicate that darns fragment the fluvial system of the continental United States and that their impact on river discharge is several times greater than impacts deemed likely as a result of global climate change. The 75,000 dams in the continental United States are capable of storing a volume of water almost equaling one year's mean runoff, but there is considerable geographic variation in potential surface water impacts. In some western mountain and plains regions, darns can store more than 3 year's runoff, while in the Northeast and Northwest, storage is as little as 25% of the annual …

17β-estradiol enhances NMDA receptor-mediated EPSPs and long-term potentiation. Gonadal steroid hormones influence CNS functioning through a variety of different mechanisms. To test the hypothesis that estrogen modulates synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus, in vitro hippocampal slices from 2-mo-old Sprague-Dawley male rats were used to determine the effect of 17β-estradiol on bothN-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-mediated excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) through intracellular recordings and long-term potentiation (LTP) through extracellular recordings. Intracellular EPSPs and extracellular field EPSPs (fEPSPs) were recorded from CA1 pyramidal cells by stimulating Schaffer collateral fibers. A simple experiment to determine the diameter of the blind spot is described. Students are divided into groups of three and work together to perform the experiment. The procedure takes about 15 minutes and seems to be quite enjoyable to the class.

Microcystins In Components Of Twelve New Hampshire Lakes Of Varied Trophic Status, Kimberly M. Johnson

Cyanobacteria toxins, called microcystins (MCs), were found in components of twelve, stratified New Hampshire (USA) lakes of varied trophic status during the summer of 1998. A sensitive ELISA method detected MC levels in whole lakewater, grazable phytoplankton fractions (<30 mm), net phytoplankton (> 375 µm), and isolated copepod and cladoceran (Daphnia sp.) samples. Whole lakewater (WLW) and net phytoplankton MC concentrations ranged between 9 and 165 ng MC L-1 and 0.2 and 2031 mg MC g-1-dry wt, respectively. Lakewater MC concentrations correlated with total epilimnetic phosphorus and total epilimnetic chlorophyll a concentrations and inversely with Secchi disk depth.

Zealand Pond, New Hampshire, was chosen as the site of a remote lake study. Data were collected between July 18 and August 29,1997. Zealand Pond had a relatively high pH (6.3-6.9) and alkalinity (2.3- 3.1 mg CaCO3 /liter), considering its small size and elevation (752 m). The lake was not thermally stratified, presumably due to its shallow depth and exposure to wind. Zealand Pond had a diverse zooplankton community, with two calanoid copepod species (Hesperodiaptomus wilsonae and Leptodiaptomus ashlandi), two cyclopoid copepods (Mesocyclops edax and Ectocyclops phaleratus), six cladoceran species (Daphnia ambigua, Daphnia pulex, Ceriodaphnia reticulata, Bosmina longirostris, Alona costata, …

This investigation was conducted to examine the nature of the attachment relationship among children of adolescent mothers using a standard measure known as the Strange Situation procedure. This project compared the attachment relationships of children of adolescent mothers with children of older, non-adolescent adult mothers. Given the paucity of research on attachment among infants of adolescent mothers, the rationale for conducting this study was to supplement an existing weak literature base. The major prediction of this study was that there would be significantly more insecurity among 18-month-old infants of adolescent mothers. Heterogeneity in ocean patterns is at once intriguing and problematic. Processes such as primary production or mixing occur on a range of scales in time and in space; variability must be captured at appropriate scales with tools flexible enough to detect changes in pattern-generating processes. Frontal and fractal analyses were applied to satellite-derived sea surface temperature and ocean color imagery to describe patterns in Northwestern Atlantic shelf and slope seas. Overall drug response is controlled by pharmacodynamic (PD) phase and pharmacokinetic (PK) phase. Over the last twenty years, much greater emphasis has been placed in PK phase because its outcome is much easier to measure and model compared to that of PD. In fact, PD and its parameters play an important role in controlling drug response. This document consists of three studies.
