Natural Hyperthermia And Expression Of The Heat Shock Protein Hsp70 Affect Developmental Abnormalities In Drosophila Melanogaster, Stephen P. Roberts, Martin E. Feder

We Demonstrate that Natural Heat Stress on Wild Larval Drosophila Melanogaster Results in Severe Developmental Defects in >10% of Eclosing Adults, and that Increased Copy Number of the Gene Encoding the Major Inducible Heat Shock Protein of D. Melanogaster, Hsp70, is Sufficient to Reduce the Incidence of Such Abnormalities. Specifically, Non-Adult D. Melanogaster Inhabiting Necrotic Fruit Experienced Severe, Often Lethal Heat Stress in Natural Settings. Adult Flies Eclosing from Wild Larvae that Had Survived Natural Heat Stress Exhibited Severe Developmental Anomalies of Wing and Abdominal Morphology, Which Should Dramatically Affect Fitness. the Frequency of Developmental Abnormalities Varied Along Two Independent …

LSAY Technical Reports

In 1995, a nationally representative sample of approximately 13,000 Year 9 students was selected to form the first cohort of the new Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth program. The sample was constructed by randomly selecting two Year 9 classes from a national sample of 300 schools designed to represent state and sector. Reading and numeracy tests were administered to students in their schools to provide information on early school achievement for use in later analyses of educational and labour market participation. Students also completed a background questionnaire about their educational and vocational plans and attitudes to school. In 1996 these …

Arg82 is one of the four buried charged residues in the retinal binding pocket of bacteriorhodopsin (bR). Previous studies show that Arg82 controls the pKas of Asp85 and the proton release group and is essential for fast light-induced proton release. To further investigate the role of Arg82 in light-induced proton pumping, we replaced Arg82 with histidine and studied the resulting pigment and its photochemical properties. The main pKa of the purple-to-blue transition (pKa of Asp85) is unusually low in R82H: 1.0 versus 2.6 in wild type (WT). At pH 3, the pigment is purple and shows light and dark adaptation, …

Evolutionary And Acclimation-Induced Variation In The Heat-Shock Responses Of Congeneric Marine Snails (Genus Tegula) From Different Thermal Habitats: Implications For Limits Of Thermotolerance And Biogeography, Lars Tomanek, George N. Somero

Heat stress sufficient to cause cellular damage triggers the heat-shock response, the enhanced expression of a group of molecular chaperones called heat-shock proteins (hsps). We compared the heat-shock responses of four species of marine snails of the genus Tegula that occupy thermal niches differing in absolute temperature and range of temperature. We examined the effects of short-term heat stress and thermal acclimation on the synthesis of hsps of size classes 90, 77, 70 and 38 kDa by measuring incorporation of (35)S-labeled methionine and cysteine into newly synthesized proteins in gill tissue. Lead Binding To Metal Oxide And Organic Phases Of Natural Aquatic Biofilms, Yarrow M. Nelson, Leonard W. Lion, Michael L. Shuler, William C. Ghiorse

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The role of the composition of surface-coating materials in controlling trace metal adsorption in aquatic environments was investigated using natural biofilms that developed on glass slides in three New York State lakes and a water-supply well. Adsorption isotherms were obtained for Pb binding to each of the biofilms in solutions with defined Pb speciation at 25°C and pH 6.0, with Pb concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 2.0 μM. Adsorption isotherms for Pb binding to laboratory-derived metal oxides and surrogate organic materials were determined under the same conditions. These isotherms, combined with characterization of natural biofilm composition, were used to estimate …

Biological Sciences

Transectional studies of Lasthenia californica in the Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve (Stanford University) have documented the existence of two races (A and C) based upon flavonoid chemistry, achene morphology, allozymes, and flowering time differences. The two races coexist on a serpentine outcrop and have maintained a sharply defined pattern of distribution for a period of at least 15 yr. The present study has revealed significant differences in the physical and chemical features of the soils harboring the two races.
