Groundwater serves more than half of North Dakota's population as a drinking water source. Nitrate (NO₃¯) is a common groundwater contaminant associated with fertilizers, septic systems and livestock waste in shallow unconfined aquifers. As a suspected carcinogen and cause of potentially lethal methemoglobinemia in infants, the natural attenuation of NO₃¯ by denitrification can be an important process in keeping groundwater as a reliable source of clean drinking water for North Dakota. Organic carbon is often considered the most important electron donor for the chemical reduction of NO₃¯ into harmless nitrogen gas. This Article supports the court's position that there is no state constitutional right to state funding of abortion. It focuses on three areas often neglected by appellate courts. First, this article will look at the legal environment in which the Constitution of 1868 was adopted. As of 1868, the law of North Carolina would have been hostile to a claim of a right to abortion or a right to state funding of abortion. Abortion rights litigants offer several state cases as precedent for their position. Next, this article will demonstrate that many of these cases are not persuasive or are …

Role Of Iron, Light, And Silicate In Controlling Algal Biomass In Subantarctic Waters Se Of New Zealand, Robert Michael Mckay, Philip Boyd, Julie Laroche, Mark Gall, Russell Frew

Phytoplankton processes in subantarctic (SA) waters southeast of New Zealand were studied during austral autumn and spring 1997. Chlorophyll a (0.2–0.3 μg L⁻¹) and primary production (350–650 mg C m⁻² d⁻¹) were dominated by cells μm (cyanobacteria) in both seasons. The photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (F_υ/F_m) of cells was low (0.3), indicating physiological stress. Dissolved Fe (DFe) levels in surface waters were subnanomolar, and the molecular marker flavodoxin indicated that cells were iron stressed. In contrast, Subtropical Convergence (STC) and subtropical waters had higher algal biomass/production levels, particularly …

Dads Make a Difference is a statewide paternity education project where senior high teens, male and female, are trained to teach a 4-lesson school curriculum about the importance of fathers in children's lives to youth in grades 6-8. Designed to help prevent too-early parenting, the curriculum helps older teens discuss the legal, financial, and emotional responsibilities of parenting with younger youth. The Dads Make a Difference middle school curriculum covers these topics: risks and risky behavior; the legal issues of fatherhood; how involved fathers make a difference in the well-being being of children; and the importance of making responsible decisions.

When service learning is part of the curriculum, students become involved in something important and learn that they can make a difference in the world. Based on John Dewey’s (1938) theory of experiential learning, service learning takes the student out of the classroom and into the community. In a 1995 public address, Secretary of Education Richard Riley remarked that “by involving students in hands-on learning, problem solving, and applications of academic knowledge in real settings, service learning can increase students’ academic achievement in challenging subjects and creates a sense of engagement that enhances a student’s motivation to complete school.”

In Madin-Darby canine kidney D1cells extracellular nucleotides activate P2Y receptors that couple to several signal transduction pathways, including stimulation of multiple phospholipases and adenylyl cyclase. For one class of P2Y receptors, P2Y2 receptors, this stimulation of adenylyl cyclase and increase in cAMP occurs via the conversion of phospholipase A2 (PLA2)-generated arachidonic acid (AA) to prostaglandins (e.g. PGE2). These prostaglandins then stimulate adenylyl cyclase activity, presumably via activation of prostanoid receptors. In the current study we show that agents that increase cellular cAMP levels (including PGE2, forskolin, and the β-adrenergic agonist isoproterenol) can inhibit P2Y receptor-promoted AA release. Study Of The Effects Of Ultraviolet Radiation On Tetraselmis Chuii Growth And Morphology, Charles T. Audette

Exposure of batch cultures of Tetraselmis chuii to three levels (0.020, 0.126 and 0.217 m W/cm²) of artificial UV-B caused a depression of exponential growth corresponding to UV-B dose. Three UV-B experiments were conducted. Cultures were maintained at 25 °C on a 18L:6D photoperiod for the first two experiments and at 12L: 12D for the last experiment. Growth was measured daily by measuring optical density at a standard wavelength of 750 nm. This was compared periodically with hemacytometer cell counts. Cell morphology (projected cell area, length, width, perimeter, and roundness) was determined by microscopic image analysis, and showed …

A Study Of K-12 Teachers In Small School Districts : Their Levels Of Stress, The Source Of Stress, And The Effect Of Initiating Coping Strategies, Roberta J. Farwell

Problem. This study explored the relationship between K-12 regular education teachers in school districts with fewer than 2,500 students and their levels of stress as it related to the sources of stress, demographic variables, and initiation of coping strategies.

Method. The subjects of this study were 329 K-12 teachers. They completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory, Education form, a demographic/coping mechanism form, and Stressor Source Check List.
