Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

An epidemiological survey for the monitoring of bovine tuberculosis transmission was carried out in western Liguria, a region in northern Italy. Fifteen Mycobacterium bovis strains were isolated from 63 wild boar samples (62 from mandibular lymph nodes and 1 from a liver specimen). Sixteen mediastinal lymph nodes of 16 head of cattle were collected, and 15 Mycobacterium bovis strains were subsequently cultured. All M. bovisstrains isolated from cattle and wild boars were genotyped by spoligotyping and by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis with the IS6110 and IS1081 probes. The taxonomic status of the Arizona myotis (Myotis occultus) is uncertain. Although the taxon was described as a distinct species and currently is regarded as such by some authors, others have noted what they interpreted as intergradation with the little brown bat (M. lucifugus carissima) near the Colorado-New Mexico state line. In this study, we used protein electrophoresis to compare bats of these nominal taxa. We examined 20 loci from 142 specimens referable to M. occultus and M. lucifugus from New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. Nine of the 20 loci were polymorphic. Freud's subsequent suppression of his discovery has led in part to the contemporary disbelief in the existence of childhood sexual abuse. We will initially address the historic acceptance of scientific propositions by the law as they relate to sanity. Insanity is one of the earliest forms of incompetence addressed by the criminal justice system. The current treatment of the courts with respect to head injuries will be presented. Following, there will be an explanation of the philosophical demand for an independent mens rea to sanction punishment. This will be tied to the relationship between head injuries and crime. A largely unexplored area in behavioral ecology is the inherent conflict between sleep and wakefulness. Wakefulness is an adaptive state that allows animals to interact with their environment, yet its efficacy is contingent upon prior sleep, a vulnerable state of reduced responsiveness. Birds and aquatic mammals have essentially side-stepped this problem by simultaneously engaging in both wakefulness and sleep; one cerebral hemisphere sleeps while the other remains awake, a unique state known as unihemispheric sleep. In aquatic mammals, unihemispheric sleep allows sleep and sufacing to breathe to occur concurrently. However, the adaptive function of avian unihemispheric sleep has been unclear. …

Changes In Ph Of Boar Semen Extenders, Mary Sue Newth, Donald G. Levis

An experiment was conducted to examine the change in pH across time of five extenders (MR-A, VSP, BTS, Merck III and SpermAid). Type of extender and time of measurement affected (P < .01) the overall pH of liquid extender; however an interaction (P < .01) occurred between type of extender and time. BTS and MERCK III had a small increase in pH across time, MR-A and VSP had a linear increase in pH across time and SpermAid decreased in pH during the first 20 minutes before gradually increasing to a consistent level of pH at 50 minutes after preparation. Boar semen extenders do not have the same pattern of pH change across time. Semen should not be mixed with extender until a stable pH has been reached. In general, a liquid boar semen extender should be prepared 60 to 90 minutes prior to mixing with raw semen.

Previously, we reported (See Yen et al., Nebraska Swine Report 1998) White Line gilts selected for an index of high ovulation rate and high prenatal survival (White Line-2, WL-2) maintained a larger pool of medium follicles (3 to 6.9 mm) during the early- to mid-follicular phase than randomly selected controls (White Line- 1, WL-1). The present study evaluated the health status of the medium follicles to determine whether WL-2 gilts maintain a healthier pool of medium follicles and are able to continue selection of ovulatory follicles later in the follicular phase to achieve their ovulation rate advantage (6.6 ova). Defining nutrient requirements or allowances is the first, and conceivably most important step, in developing a nutrition program for growing-finishing pigs. Understanding the terminology and underlying principles used to define nutrient requirements and allowances for pigs will help producers better evaluate their nutrition programs. This information will also enable producers to interface production outputs (e.g., growth rate and carcass data) to published nutrient requirement and allowance programs, such as The National Research Council, Nutrient Requirements of Swine, 1998. An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of dietary feather meal level, as well as whether or not start weight influenced feather meal effects in growth performance and carcass traits of barrows. Dietary feather meal additions tended to decrease the final body weight variation of barrows. Barrows fed diets containing 20 percent feather meal from 80 pounds to slaughter had decreased average daily gain, average daily feed intake, digestible lysine intake, energy intake, daily lean gain and backfat depth. Evening Primrose oil (EPO) is a suspected anticarcinogen, however, little is known about its method of stopping and/or slowing tumor growth. The present research used S. marcescens, S. typhimurium, Escherichia coli, Staphlyococcus aureus, and S. cerevisiae as cellular models to investigate the antimutagenic properties of EPO. Ultraviolet radiation was used as a mutagen. Each organism was screened for mutations at various lengths of UV light exposure and plated on appropriate media. One period of UV exposure that represented 10% population kill was chosen for each organism, and the organism was once again exposed to UV light …

Deformed frogs have been appearing frequently in Minnesota and throughout the United States. One hypothesis for the cause of deformities is genetic damage as a result of pesticides. This project will use the DNA Comet Assay to determine the extent of genetic damage in affected sites (sites with a greater number of deformities) versus non-affected sites (sites with fewer deformities). The DNA Comet Assay involves electrophoresis of cells in which the membranes have been solubilized and the DNA uncoiled. Electrophoresis spreads the genetic material. Prairies once covered vast areas of the Midwestern United States. In Minnesota, less than one percent of the state's original eighteen million acres of prairie remains. Restoration of prairie vegetation has become a popular means of augmenting preservation efforts and increasing the area of this rare native habitat. In this study I used species-area and rank abundance relationships to compare the species richness and diversity of restored prairies at St. John's University and Sand Prairie to remnant prairie preserves at Roscoe and Sand Prairie (all in Stearns County, Minnesota).
